06.01.2022 I went to the cricket today. SCG. New Zealand v Australia. The flags were stretched out on the closely clipped turf, the ‘Welcome to Country’ was nicely done,... and the singers were ready for their operatic rendition of the 2 anthems. Then ... a deputy captain from one of our Volunteer Bushfire Brigades was introduced to the 35,000 spectators. Can’t remember his name... doesn’t matter. He was there to represent all of the wo/men of all volunteer brigades. What do you think happened? He strode across the ground, in his baggy yellows and Firie boots. No speech. He just joined the official party near the microphone on the ground. Well, all 35,000-odd peeps spontaneously stood up in the stands, and started clapping. Everyone!! Even a number of older troopers I could see ... with buggered knees and painful backs struggled lamely to their full height ... and started clapping. Gee, a spontaneous standing ovation. I felt the involuntary pricks in my eyes and the wet trying to get out. I looked around ... why ... ? ... curious to see if I’m the only one overcome with emotion. No. Lotsa wet-eyes ... lotsa. The People clapped, and clapped, and clapped ... then more clapping, clapping, clapping ... 70,000 hands clapping. No whistling. No calling out. No smart-arsery ... just an endless ocean of flat-clapping. It was strange, all this clapping without a trace of excitement, or partisanship, or rivalry, or nationalism, or ... anything other than respect, trust, and appreciation. On-and-on it went. Endless. Everywhere, including the Members. There was no cue to stop ... so, no-one stopped. Normally, there is a cue. If a batter scores a hundred then gets out, s/he gets clapped to the fence ... then we stop. But ... here ... today ... no-one stopped. No cue, no stop. Everything else could wait. No-one ... not even one that I could see ... not one stopped, or slowed. On and on ... clap-clap-clap ... on and on it went in undiminishing intent and momentum. No-one ... stopped. No-one. Just a relentless expression of gratitude and respect. I wondered how it would come to a close ... because there were zero signs of anyone wanting to stop. How long? Dunno ... maybe 5-6 minutes. Then, the MC intervened and said we must do the anthems ... oh, yair...the anthems ... and so we stopped clapping. A very, very lovely expression of our common Humanity. So good.
