11.01.2022 This October we celebrated Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) month. AAC is a widely used and celebrated tool in our school. It gives people a voice and helps them to communicate their needs, wants, opinions and feelings. It can positively influence social skills, school performance, self-esteem, and improve students’ ability to engage in school life. There a number of different types of AAC used in our school. Watch the video to see: AUSLAN (Signing) Aide...d Language Display topic specific boards used in classroom activities such as learning about the Senior Formal Communication boards and displays these are sets of photos, drawings, symbols or words used to augment spoken activities High Tech Devices proloquo2go, PODD Compass app, Snap Core First Core word boards including alphabet boards used for spelling Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) used to request preferred items PODD Communication Books ‘Pragmatic Organisation Dynamic Display’, a way of organising whole word and symbol vocabulary in a communication book or speech generating device. At Kuraby, we strive for AAC to be used all day, everyday, all of the time, by everyone. Please enjoy this video of students using AAC in all areas of the school. Augment means to add to or to enhance. For example, we can augment speech by using gestures, eye pointing and body language. Alternative means a choice or a substitute. We can use alternative communication to speech by pointing to symbols, signing or by spelling. Communication means to send and receive messages with at least one other person.
