23.01.2022 Still time to catch photographer Jan Sargeant's wonderful exhibition IN THE ZONE at the Old Post Office Gallery in Atherton. It is a fantastic showcase of local talent - forty one large photographic portraits of creatives, including five of Kuranda's own. Exhibition closes 26 September. Photographer Jan Sargent is often available at the exhibition and when The Kuranda Paper visited she explained she is still looking for more subjects to capture: IN THE ZONE: THE SECOND WAVE.................. I regard the project - photographing artists and artisans of the far north - as an ongoing, lifetime passion. I'm aware I've only just scratched the surface with these 41 subjects - there are many many more of you out there. If you reside anywhere in north Queensland, from as far south as Townsville, I would love to photograph you for the next exhibition. Most of us are very wary of being photographed but as you can see if you check out my exhibition, I'm careful to show people in a kind light. If you'd like to participate, please leave your name and contact details - mobile number, landline or email address, on the form provided at the Old Post Office Gallery, or email/text me: [email protected] 0439135583 (I will never exhibit your photo publicly if you don't like it.) Thank you. Jan Sargeant See more

22.01.2022 It's great to see more businesses opening this weekend in Kuranda! It will take time, but we all need to support each other. So get out and enjoy our amazing community and BUY LOCAL. Check the Kuranda Noticeboard on FB to see businesses and their opening times.

21.01.2022 We thought the idea of a Kuranda business group, which would bring together Kuranda retailers from market stall to main street shop, was such a great and constructive idea we happily put this notice on our June edition front page. It seems very timely that an initiative for Kuranda businesses to form a truly representative business group be explored. Such a group could collectively lobby, raise funds and explore opportunities to reboot the local economy in a way which meets ...local businesses' needs and aspirations. Businesses are encouraged to make contact via the email supplied ( [email protected] ) so that a meeting can be arranged for discussion as to how such a group might be established and run. Please do so asap as time is of the essence. Email today with your expression of interest to be involved and kept informed. The Kuranda Media Association, publishers of The Kuranda Paper, will support such a group in whatever way we can because a healthy local business economy is good for our community. Shop local, Buy local, Act local.

11.01.2022 Our masthead this month is kindly shared with us by the artist and wildlife carer, Rebecca Koller. Rebecca’s art supports both her arts practice and wildlife caring. "Merlin’s Chick 2020" is a new work and available for purchase from Rebecca (0424 810 840 or message through Facebook) with 25% going to Kuranda Conservation. Rebecca’s public art can be enjoyed through her Kuranda roller door paintings and painted electricity boxes on the streets of Kuranda. Cassowary bin stickers are currently available through Kuranda Conservation (see advertisement on page 17).

11.01.2022 BAD NEWS... and GOOD NEWS. Firstly we received, post production, news that the opening of the Jan Sargent photographic exhibition, IN THE ZONE, featuring seven Kuranda artists among forty stunning portraits, has been delayed until 25 August, due to a later than expected re-opening of the Old Post Office Gallery in Atherton. So, apologies if anyone turned up to a closed gallery over the weekend. Good news? That means you can still make plans to include a visit as part of a Ta...blelands trip from 25 August to 26 September. You can read more about the exhibition (just remember that later opening date) on Page 10 of the August edition of The Kuranda Paper - in hard copy from Kuranda Post Office and other outlets in Kuranda, Mareeba, Atherton and Collins Booksellers at Smithfield - or online at www.kurandapaper,com
