24.01.2022 Hazard reduction burn underway by QPWS Mapleton.
21.01.2022 Today Kureelpa Brigade and Mapleton Brigade are assisting Queensland Parks & Wildlife Service (QPWS) with a controlled Hazard Reduction Burn in the Mapleton Forest. The burn is North of Mapleton and currently the smoke is moving towards the West. There may be smoke in the area over the next few days.
21.01.2022 Some good advice from our south sea cousins. Last winter we had two separate fire calls on one day because of ashes being put onto garden beds instead of using a metal container.
18.01.2022 Why is it so smokey ? Its all to do with inversion. A layer of warm air sitting over a layer of cold air is called a temperature inversion. Inversions are common during the night and early morning when cool night air collects close to the ground This arrangement of air is stable because cold air near the ground is heavy and tends to stay near the ground.... Inversions influence the smoke produced by a fire. In stable conditions, when an inversion is strong, smoke is trapped close to the ground causing issues with air quality and visibility. Once the inversion breaks, typically in the late morning, the smoke becomes more mixed with clear air and disperses through the atmosphere. The mixing height, which is available to view on MetEye under the Wind Forecasts section, is an indicator of whether smoke will be trapped on a particular day. When there is low mixing height (less than 1000 metres), smoke will stay near the ground. When the mixing height is higher (greater than 2000 metres), smoke will disperse higher into the atmosphere and air quality will improve at the ground. At the moment 7pm 26 May, MetEye shows the mixing height as less than 500m for most of the Sunshine Coast. This is trapping the smoke near the ground. http://www.bom.gov.au//fire-w/bushfire-weather/index.shtml

Hear from our experts, along with The Bur...eau of Meteorology, Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy, Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, The Carpentaria Land Council Aboriginal Corporation and The Inspector General of Emergency Management to understand the practices and strategies of bushfire mitigation in Queensland, weather and climate factors that guide the implementation of bushfire mitigation methods, traditional and emerging burning practices and what Queenslanders can do to combat bushfire risk on their own land. 14.01.2022 Last night our firefighters crawled out of bed, changed from their PJ’s into their turnout gear and responded to a reported rubbish fire. Kureelpa 41 and Kureelpa 51 responded and were on scene within 15 minutes from when we first received the call! Fortunately the fire turned out to be a resident burning a small pile of green waste in a concrete cylinder. We assisted the land owner in extinguishing the fire as they were wanting to go to bed and the garden hose wasn’t enough... to completely extinguish the fire. As we are no longer in a fire ban this fire was acceptable and the resident was on scene actively looking after it. However, we still appreciate people remaining vigilant and phoning 000 when the see a fire that looks un-contained, threatening life and/or property or looks unmanaged. If any residents needs any information about permits, fire bans or have any general fire related questions, feel free to message us and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible!

09.01.2022 Yesterday our fire crews assisted QPWS with a hazard reduction burn in the Mapleton State Forest. They put in a massive effort all day! As we move out of fire season we will be assisting QPWS and other Rural Fire Brigades around our area with hazard reduction burns to reduce fuel loading in the area which can reduce wild fire intensity. If any of our local residents are concerned about the fuel load on their property, you can message our Facebook page and we will get back t...o you as soon as possible. Remember, if you want to light a fire on your property that will be bigger than 2m in any direction, you require a permit to light that fire. Permits are available from your local fire Warden and can take a few days to organise.
05.01.2022 A big night effort was had by our firefighters assisting Nambour and District State Emergency Service with some storm damage and sandbag operations! We helped assist with multiple jobs across the Sunshine Coast area! Don’t forget if you need SES assistance call: 132500!
04.01.2022 It’s with a heavy heart that we inform you all of the tragic death of our 1st Officer Brad Fox. Brad was involved in a truck accident on the 12th February. He w...as known by all for his infectious laugh and warm heart. He was a true leader and dedicated a large amount of his life to our brigade and to the Rural Fire Service. He was only days away from his dream job that we had worked so hard for all his life. His presence in the service will be sorely missed and a large hole will forever be indented. His funeral will be held on Wednesday 26th February from 11:30-3pm at Burpengary Traditional Funeral Home. If you are in the fire service his family has asked that no formal uniforms are to be worn PPE only, the dirtier the better. Brad never liked wearing his formal uniform and it’s not how he remembers us. It’s also been asked that no epaulets are to be worn as ranks meant nothing to him and we were all equal in his eyes. Please bring appliances as well and there will be someone directing for parking. The wake will then be held at the D’Aguilar pub after the service. Please share to anyone that you feel may like to attend. Riding God’s appliance now. We’ve got it from here mate
03.01.2022 *** UPDATE *** Our firefighters have made it safely to their destination this morning and formed strike team Mike! They have been hard at work today on the fire ground, and done a lot of good work! We imagine they’ll be quick to fall asleep tonight for another long day tomorrow!
