24.01.2022 Our garden is vibrantly blooming and thriving thanks to the green thumb of our wonderful volunteer Ron! Many thanks to him for bringing the garden back to life after neglect due to lockdown. The hall will be reopening to hirers in the coming weeks and some recent improvements will be noted.

20.01.2022 A public statement from our Executive Management.

19.01.2022 Queensland Queensland has announced a state of emergency, and along with enforcing the two-person limit, residents are now only allowed to leave their home for one of eight essential reasons. These are: Obtaining food or other essential goods or services.... Obtaining medical treatment or other healthcare services. Engaging in physical exercise, either alone or in the company of no more than one other person; or in the company of a family group who ordinarily live in the same household. Performing work on behalf of an employer that is engaged in essential business, activity or undertaking, and the work to be performed is of a nature that cannot reasonably be performed from the persons principal place of residence. Visiting a terminally ill relative or to attend a funeral. Providing assistance, care or support to an immediate member of the persons family. Attending any court of Australia or to comply with or give effect to orders of the court. Attending a childcare facility, school, university or other educational institution, to the extent care or instruction cannot reasonably be obtained in the persons principal place of residence. Queensland also restricts gatherings of more than two people. This applies both in public and private area but exempts members of the same household. This means someone can still socialise with the family or roommates they live with, but if there are more than two people in the home, no visitors are allowed. If someone lives alone they are allowed one social guest. That guest is allowed to leave their home to visit. If someone leaves their house for an essential reason, such as exercise, they can be joined by only one other person or the members of their household. Queensland police officers will be able to issue on-the-spot fines of $1,334.50 for individuals and $6,672.50 for corporations, who breach these laws. The maximum penalties available through the courts will be 10 times those amounts. Those arriving in Queensland from other states are required to undertake a 14-day quarantine, as well as returning Queensland residents who have been to areas deemed to be Covid-19 hotspots in Australia. There are some exemptions for those who regularly cross the Queensland-NSW border for work.

19.01.2022 Coming soon to Kurilpa Hall... Management have approved installation of a much-needed CCTV system. The hall is a public building which serves vulnerable community members. It also cannot be staffed 24/7. This protective measure will bring peace of mind and deter misbehaviour. When installation is imminent, regular hall users will be informed via email.

15.01.2022 Jackie Trad gave a very interesting talk at the Raise The Rate Forum on Friday, October 18 at Kurilpa Hall. The subject of the talk was to share research on who uses Newstart, how it is not enough for many people who are seeking work, and what needs to be done to make sure this benefit is effective at helping people achieve their employment goals.

11.01.2022 Due to recently announced cases in Queensland extra restrictions have now been put in place for movement and gatherings in South-East Queensland, including all ...disability accommodation facilities and residential aged care. These restrictions mean if you live in listed Local Government Areas you can: Have a maximum of 10 visitors to your home. The visitors can be from different households; Have a public gathering with a maximum of 10 people including yourself, or with members of your household. Extra restrictions have also been put in place for movement and gatherings in areas outside of listed local government areas. These restrictions include: Have a maximum of 30 visitors to your home. The visitors can be from different households; Have a public gathering with a maximum of 30 people including yourself, or with members of your household. These additional restrictions are also in place: Residential aged care and disability accommodation facilities have restrictions on visitors and residents leaving the facility; Hospitals have been asked to restrict visitors as soon as possible; Hospital emergency departments, aged care facilities and disability accommodation facilities will use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including face masks and gloves to treat all patients and residents. These measures will be taken in response to possible community spread associated with a recent COVID-19 case. Protective lockdown will require accommodation providers to restrict visitor access, and for staff to wear masks. More detailed information will be made available as soon as possible via the Queensland Health website. See more

08.01.2022 As our venue is not staffed during evenings or weekends, we often find that people leave things on the premises. Intentions are sometimes good -- they hope their rubbish will be re-used or recycled. However, in most cases, it is simply the dumping of unwanted, un-useable items which we then have to pay to get rid of. Especially if the item is old, damaged, stained, etc. Last night, thanks to our CCTV, we could see two people dumping old, damaged furniture. We cannot use this and now we have to pay someone to take it away to the tip. This practice is a nuisance, not a help. So, if you see someone dumping used furniture in our car park, please ask them not to do it, and contact our after hours mobile, 0488 111 291. Thanks!

06.01.2022 Good morning to our Kurilpa Hall hirers. This message is to update you on the decision of the APSL Management Committee, who discussed re-opening the venue to hirers yesterday at their quarterly meeting. Prior to this, I had been preparing the COVID Safe plan and was trying to get some maintenance work done so the centre would be ready for public use.... However, the grim situation in Victoria remains present in the minds of Management members. The spread of Coronavirus in Melbourne is not slowing down and the lockdown conditions are becoming even more strict with some people still trying to bend the rules. It has also been quite alarming to see individuals recently lying their way over the border into Queensland to avoid self-quarantine, and roaming the local community whilst carrying COVID 19 infections with them. We have been quite lucky in Queensland with our low numbers of infections, but that could easily change if only a few people do the wrong thing. Thanks to the bad behaviour of these handful of people, South Brisbane and Logan remain vulnerable to becoming hotspots. Management is aware of the risks of having group activities in the building when its still early days. At a press conference only days ago, Jeanette Young said were not out of the woods yet. And we must act accordingly. Therefore the Management Committee has decided to delay re-opening to hirers for another 6 weeks. I know that many of you have been hopeful the hall would become available again this month, for smaller groups and with additional hygiene precautions in place. But given the fact that we run an aged care service in addition to hiring out our centre - the mitigation of risk is our utmost concern. The Executive members will be meeting again at the end of August to re-assess the conditions and restrictions present in Southeast Queensland. At that time, if the situation is improved, re-opening with a COVID Safe plan will be discussed again. Deepest apologies to those of you who had wanted the space for August bookings. We hope that in the future we might still be able to accommodate you.

05.01.2022 Friday night at Kurilpa Hall, our long-time monthly folk music concert is back for another night of great rhythms to enjoy.

03.01.2022 Good news for hiring groups - our hall is considering hire applications for groups of under 30 with a COVID Safe Plan. The venue will be available to groups who can adhere to new safety rules. Please contact us for a hall hire application form and provide details about your function in order to get a price. Unfortunately the Kitchen will be off limits to public use as that area is used for our Aged Care service. Food and drink are also not allowed except for water bottles required for hydration in sport/fitness activities. Please speak to our office about a quote, which includes post-hire sanitisation.

03.01.2022 Our front garden and facade are currently getting a lot of compliments for the care and hard work we are putting into improvements. Thanks to the community for your support. More enhancements are on the way for 2020!

02.01.2022 Due to ongoing security concerns, Kurilpa Hall management has approved the installation of a new gate. The old gate has been removed as it was no longer functional. You will notice the latch is padlocked but when the hall re-opens, hirers will continue to have access to parking. Feel free to contact Anneliese with any queries.

02.01.2022 Per government orders, we are closing our doors. We have given notice via email to all our regular hirers letting them know that all activities at our venue must cease from tonight at midnight. Watch this space for updates.

02.01.2022 XMAS HAMPER CAMPAIGN UPDATE: $14, 450 RAISED Thanks to the generosity of our community we are over halfway to our goal of raising $20,000 before Christmas.
