25.01.2022 This Manchester intersection emulates Dutch road design to make city cycling safer. The design, which took three years from concept to deployment, is inspired b...y international examples of best practice, like the well-established Dutch system. 24.01.2022 It was great to be a part of the discussion surrounding property resumption and proposed foot bridges at the markets this Saturday past, alongside Jonathan Sri,... Councillor for The Gabba and Amy MacMahon - Greens MP for South Brisbane. Have a listen to WECA's president Seleneah More speaking on the topic. A few local people from the community jumped up on the mic to share their thoughts, concerns and ideas surrounding the proposed green bridges, too.

24.01.2022 "[Cities] have been the driving force in creating wealth, innovation and culture over the last few centuries. Does a combination of Covid-19 and new technology ...mean that the need for dense concentrations of people is lessening?" Hear from the likes of Saskia Sassen and Amanda Levete in this week's #SaturdayListen from BBC Radio 4 as they discuss how we can 'Rethink' cities in light of #covid19: http://ow.ly/BuW550BtP5I

24.01.2022 "Our cities are designed around optimizing the economic growth of a certain strata of society and not around the day-to-day needs of everyone else. The overlapp...ing care crises of COVID-19 make the case for feminist cities clearer than its ever been." In this interview, Leslie Kern talks about her new book, "Feminist City" and how cities can be better designed to support people of all genders, races, classes, and family situations, particularly in the wake of #COVID19. http://ow.ly/lqaR50At0Ud

24.01.2022 How does urban design and town planning shape our experience of public space? Are there design and planning outcomes that lift the interactions between people? For example, its bad to put a barrier and distance between the eventual users/occupiers of the buildings in the 'NOT THIS' illustration. Have you seen any spaces in West End that fit the "NOT THIS' example? -pls share a photo The West End Community Association wants better planning outcomes for West End, sometimes they...'ve even taken Council and developers to Court to insure better outcomes. People support #WECA in these actions because they make for a better experience of life in our suburb Jonathan Sri, Councillor for The Gabba Jackie Trad Queensland Greens West End Branch - ALP

23.01.2022 Masterplan Riverside Plan?

23.01.2022 If you agree we need more safety improvements to intersections along the southern end of Montague Rd, please call the mayor's office on 3403 4400 and leave a message, or email [email protected]...

22.01.2022 Dwelling in dignity, working in proper conditions, [being able to gain] provisions, well-being, education and leisure. To improve quality of life, you need to ...reduce the access radius for these functions. That commitment to bringing all lifes essentials to each neighborhood means creating a more thoroughly integrated urban fabric, where stores mix with homes, bars mix with health centers, and schools with office buildings. Mayor Anne Hidalgo WECA believes this is possible for Kurilpa. During CoVid 19 lockdown our neighbourhood was self contained for many. What were the infrastructure/ service gaps?

21.01.2022 DROP the TOLL on the Go Between Bridge & the need for this development is gone. Save the trees please

20.01.2022 So ....angry that these trees outside State library/GOMA are to be cut down. The council has not consulted with community and. . . the pegs are in work starts on Mothers Day (Sunday) seriously...

20.01.2022 Good people doing great things.

17.01.2022 "Cars took a break from killing people, too. About 10 pedestrians die on New York Citys streets in an ordinary month. Under lockdown, the city went a record two months without a single pedestrian fatality."

17.01.2022 "miniature forests grow 10 times faster and become 30 times denser and 100 times more biodiverse"

17.01.2022 These are just a small snippet of the businesses in 4101. Some have adjusted to online, delivery, and new products, while others are bunkering down and waiting for lockdown to be over. We're hoping to continue supporting them well into the future! Illustrations by Houses of West End

16.01.2022 BAD DESIGN IN APARTMENTS COMES WITH MANY COSTS If you build bigger balconies, it means you would have to build less internal space, and almost no developer would be willing to make that trade, -Brent Toderian

16.01.2022 Right next to Davies Park in West End, a developer has lodged an application to build two 26 storey highrise towers. Here's some brief information about what'...s in the development application (you can find the full DA here https://pdonline.brisbane.qld.gov.au//Applic/default.aspx): - Two 26 storey towers the height limit for the site in the Neighbourhood Plan is 6 storeys on Montague Rd frontage and 12 behind. - 470 units the developer has estimated that this represents about 960 residents. - 728 car parks the driveway entrance is currently proposed to be on Montague Road next to the Vulture Street intersection. The developer is arguing that they should be allowed to build to 14 storeys over the height limit in exchange for handing over 0.4 hectares of the site as public parkland. But to put this into context, the BCC City Plan says that for every 1,000 residents, there should be at least 1.4 hectares of public green space in the local area. 0.4 hectares isn’t even enough green space for the residents who will live in these new buildings. It won’t do anything to address the existing shortage of green space in the Kurilpa Peninsula. I really don’t think we should have to choose between more traffic congestion and more crowded schools, or no new public parkland. Instead, Jonathan Sri and I are calling for the Council and State Government to buy this site and turn into public parkland. Join Jonathan Sri and I for a community meeting on Saturday 6 March at 10am to hear more about the proposed development and to discuss what we can do as a community to fight it. RSVP here https://www.amymacmahon.com/daviespark You can find more information about what's being proposed here https://www.amymacmahon.com/montague271

16.01.2022 How do we mainstream a gender-aware approach to the city? In this short video, anteverti interviews MIT School of Architecture + Planning Asst. Professor of Urban Science Catherine d'Ignazio for #citiestobe on gender differences in the use of public space: http://ow.ly/cUMK50BbDZL

16.01.2022 We need more of these STAT! This new trash rack in Birkdale has already saved 8.5 tonnes of waste from local stormwater in just two weeks, according to Redl...and City Council. 15.01.2022 Meanwhile (temporary) uses in the city should this be the new normal? Food for thought from Liz Crump Arup on the LSE Geography & Environment Progressing Planning blog. http://ow.ly/zsBI50AsiBz

15.01.2022 WESS and BSHS were open to all students today! Our local catchment based schools have high rates of walkers and cyclists to school. This is helpful for new dr...op off procedures( parents say good bye at the gate and practice physical distancing) and avoids the hassle and hazard of car lines. It is also great for the brain according to Mass Experiment 2012. I believe that deep down we were naturally and originally not designed to sit still, Niels Egelund said. We learn through our head and by moving. Something happens within the body when we move, and this allows us to be better equipped afterwards to work on the cognitive side.

10.01.2022 "Several years ago, the council drafted a masterplan for Riverside Drive, but this was never formalised, and the outdated draft no longer reflects the needs and priorities of the rapidly growing local community. The absence of a masterplan causes conflict and confusion as different park users make competing improvement requests for various sections of the park." -Councillor Jonathan Sri, Gabba Ward

10.01.2022 "Natural Forests are Key. Trees are integral to urban and peri-urban rewilding. Under the terms of the European Green Deal a new strategy to protect and restore nature in the European Union three billion new trees will be planted across the 27 member states by 2030, many in and around cities."

07.01.2022 Keeping people out of harm’s way - It beggars belief this needs to be said, but it is a government responsibility to keep citizens out of harm’s way. Understanding urban flooding requires us to contend with the underlying natural systems over which we have built our cities and towns. We have learned the hard way we cannot effectively design out flooding. Instead, we must find ways to work with the natural systems of drainage and catchments. We must create urban systems to accommodate flood waters. That reduces risk to houses, schools, hospitals, businesses and other key infrastructure. https://theconversation.com/not-if-but-when-city-planners-n

05.01.2022 it'd be great to see all the new parks in Brisbane celebrated. If you know of a new park (no more than 1 year old or due for opening within the next 12 months) please post into comments Brisbane City Council Jonathan Sri, Councillor for The Gabba Amy MacMahon - Greens MP for South Brisbane West End Community Association

04.01.2022 Montague Road Redesign Announced - preview clip released.....(well not really, here's hoping we get a chance to bring some effectual response to challenges facing our suburb in urban planning)

04.01.2022 Update on nature playground for Davies Park Design work is underway and council is hoping to lock in the tender for delivery in the next few months. The propos...ed location is in the south-west corner of Davies Park, near the edge of the soccer field (but set back sufficiently from the corner kick zone etc.) Based on feedback from my office and the broader community, the council officers are looking at a design which looks and feels as natural as possible. (You can find a lot more info about nature play at this link - https://natureplayqld.org.au/ True nature play is not just plastic playground elements that are painted to look like logs and boulders.) There are a lot of constraints in Davies Park to work around. Much of the sub-surface soil is potentially contaminated, which basically precludes digging down more than half a metre to install anything. Designers will be focussed on capping and filling to build up the landscape. We also have to avoid the root zones of sensitive tree species, and areas that are especially prone to flooding. The initial draft design (note that the designers are still planning to make more changes to it as they work out what's feasible) includes areas with sand and loose pebbles that kids will be able to dig around in. There are mounds and dips that offer a lot of different levels and elevations, so children will be able to get high up and look out across the park, or crawl down some of the gullies and hide in the lower areas. There are stepping stones around the edge of the play area, and logs to walk along. The mounds and rock seating at the edge should help demarcate the space more clearly from the soccer field. Council is also proposing to plant one or two extra trees to offer more shade, and nestle the play area in as close as possible to existing trees, to offer some protection from the western sun. If anyone has suggestions on species of native tree that are reasonably fast-growing and would be easy to climb (i.e a species that tends to have strong, low-hanging branches) that I can recommend to council, feel free to post up in the comments. Parents are also welcome to post up feedback of the kinds of play experiences you’d like your children to have access to. Do you want more opportunities for climbing? Or balancing? Or for jumping one from spot to another? Or digging and getting hands dirty? This drawing is definitely still a work-in-progress, so it’s possible things could change quite a bit, but I’ll keep you posted and share whatever info I get access to.

02.01.2022 Better cities = more public housing AND greater access to green space

01.01.2022 London cant grind to a halt when lockdown restrictions are lifted. Thats why weve set in motion the biggest transformation any city of our size has ever seen to make walking and cycling a more accessible and safe means of travel. BBC News

01.01.2022 Still makes me laugh that some landlords seem to consider collecting rent a form of work. Sure, you might have worked hard to save up to buy the house initially... (or at least to save the deposit), but forcing a tenant to pay a big chunk of your mortgage for you is not meaningful or valuable 'work'. That's just parasitic. You haven't earned that money. If anything, you've extorted it because they have no viable alternative options. I'm not saying being a landlord automatically makes you a bad person. (Heck, some of my friends are landlords! :P) But can we at least stop pretending that landlords are working for their rent and have a god-given 'right' to earn a profit from housing?
