24.01.2022 Set amongst 10.8 hectares of beautiful bushland adjoining the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, our students take pride in caring for the environment they get to learn amongst every day. Today, students showed their commitment to protecting and respecting our beautiful environment by participating in Clean Up Australia Day for schools. It was wonderful to see so many students from Year 7 to Year 12 come to school prepared with their own gloves and bags for the collection of r...ubbish. Thank you to all who participated! #SchoolsCleanUpDay #CleanUpAustraliaDay #StepUpToCleanUp

24.01.2022 Australian Mathematics Competition: This is the 42nd year of one of the world’s largest school-based mathematics competitions with more than 14 million entries since 1978 with hundreds of thousands of students participating each year. The Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) is an engaging 30-problem competition that demonstrates the importance and relevance of mathematics in students’ everyday lives.... Does Ku-ring-gai High School have classrooms full of problem solvers? This year it was fantastic to see an increasing number of students participate in the Mathematics Competition. One of the largest participation rates for some years. This is a tribute to our students' dedication and willingness to have a go, and to not shy away from a difficult task. It says: I am confident, confident enough to attempt questions where some or many may be too difficult. A certificate, no matter what award, speaks volumes about the character of each participant and why they are always well received when presented to any prospective employer. Mr Brian Hatcher, Head Teacher Mathematics Pictured: Marco, Casper and Torsten, Year 11.

21.01.2022 Ku-ring-gai High School recently celebrated NAIDOC Week. NAIDOC Week celebrations are held around the country each year to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. In Year 7 Science, students were lucky enough to be able to learn about Ochre. "Mr Brameld recently came into our class and we learnt about NAIDOC Week. We made some white ochre and learnt about the different colours having different ages and genders. Then M...r Payne came in and showed us the traditional way of making ochre and what it was used for by Indigenous Australians. He also played the didgeridoo and explained what all the different sounds meant. I really enjoyed getting to smash the ochre with a boomerang and learning more about the Indigenous culture. One really interesting thing I learnt was that women can’t play the didgeridoo as it is believed to make them sick. It is one of the most interesting things I’ve experienced in a long time." Taylah, Year 7 "In Science, we learnt about Aboriginal culture. In the first period, we made ochre, a natural rock that can be ground up and made into paint. We learnt that white ochre is for everyone, yellow is for female adults, while red is for male adults. We made ochre and painted our arms with it. To accompany us, a few teachers came to our class for a visit. In the beginning of period two, Mr Payne talked about making ochre next to a creek. He asked a few students to smash a large piece of ochre with a type of boomerang. Mr Payne also played some animal noises with a didgeridoo. We learnt that to play the didgeridoo, Aboriginals use their tongue and voice box." Veda, Year 7

20.01.2022 It is Education Week 2020! Learning Snapshot: Trench Warfare "Year 11 Modern History students were tasked with battling it out against each other in teams through their very own re-creation of a World War I style trench. Using only classroom supplies, including desks, chairs, and paper aeroplanes, students were given scenarios to act out based on historical events. To make things even trickier, they had to keep their mess kits (backpacks) on at all times and try not to poke t...heir head too far above their trench. However, while danger abounded from stray paper artillery and the impending doom of going 'over the top' loomed, the soldiers managed to exchange some interesting gifts in No-Man's Land during a Christmas truce. Young Ku-ring-gai Modern Historians may have suffered a few lost limbs from trench foot - as well as the wounded pride of losing a battle - but they were ultimately able to understand the structure of the trench and work as a team to formulate strategies for battle." - Ms Birrell #EdWeek20 #LoveWhereYouLearn #KHS Filmed by: Harper, Year 9 Edited by: Mr Redshaw

20.01.2022 This week Ku-ring-gai High School celebrated NAIDOC Week. NAIDOC Week celebrations are held around the country each year to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. At lunchtime on Tuesday, a smoking ceremony was held at the front of our school, an ancient custom among Aboriginal Australians that involves smouldering various native plants to produce smoke. 18.01.2022 Love, family and conflict were some of the ideas investigated by 9E English during Term 3 as they explored the characters and themes within Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet'. This included students rehearsing and performing some iconic scenes from the play, while considering how the characters and themes still resonate with audiences today. Students took advantage of the warmer weather, rehearsing outside within the beautiful school grounds. The final performances showed som...e insightful and enthusiastic Shakespearean interpretations. 17.01.2022 On Wednesday, members of the Student Representative Council attended the International Women’s Day celebrations at Ku-ring-Gai Council Chambers. Throughout the day, students were involved in panel discussions and debates concerning gender inequality under this year’s theme Equal for All. The day started with an address from Jennifer Anderson - Mayor of Ku-ring-gai, who shared her journey into politics and explained the importance of young women engaging with the political w...orld. Afterwards, young Ku-ring-Gai activists discussed working towards parity both inside and outside the classroom, as well as ways to encourage open, honest dialogue about difference with their peers. Keynote speaker, Evelyn Horomia, spoke about her experience in the Super W Rugby Union team, and the gradual changes happening in the women’s sporting arena. Overall, the International Women’s Day celebrations gave both male and female student representatives an important space to discuss the empowerment of women within the community.

16.01.2022 The final weeks of the school year are traditionally filled with the celebration of student achievement. Like most things in 2020, we celebrated in a different way than normal. However, we were lucky to be able to come together as year groups to celebrate the successes of our students for their outstanding accomplishments in academics, sports, and community contribution. The breadth of student achievement across all facets of school participation was clearly evident as award...s were presented by Year Advisers, Assistant Year Advisers, and Principal, Ms. Terri-Anne Kamasz. Due to restrictions all perf...ormances, dance festivals, and eisteddfods were unfortunately cancelled this year, but this did not deter the enthusiasm and dedication of our students and Gelina as they continued to rehearse each week. We hope to be able to share videos of their performances soon! Dale Privett Dance Teacher

16.01.2022 This week is Men's Health Week. Men's Health Week is designed to raise awareness of the preventable health challenges that men face today. Men's Health Week is also an opportunity to create discussion about the aspects that positively contribute to improving men's physical and mental wellbeing. This week our students have been reminded about the need to maintain social connection. A particularly important feature for everyone's wellbeing. We are currently living in unusual an...d challenging circumstances created by the COVID-19 pandemic. The precautions we need to make to stay healthy are creating distance with those most important to us. "It's important to have someone you can have a conversation with, warts and all. Someone you can talk to about anything and know you won't be judged. Being able to be honest and vulnerable knowing you are safe, loved and respected. So why not take up the challenge to reach out, check-in and connect? Call a friend. Check-in on a mate that perhaps isn't travelling so well at the moment. Organise a catch-up. Making contact out of the blue can sometimes feel hard to do but it is well worth it." Gotcha4Life Males are overrepresented in mental wellbeing statistics. Be the change. Break the stigma. Reach out.

15.01.2022 It is Education Week 2020! The innovative teaching and learning happening at Ku-ring-gai High School is on display every day. This week we celebrate public education in NSW with an emphasis on students, educators, and the communities that support them. In Education Week 2020, the theme of ‘Learning together’ is aimed at capturing the vital role the local public school plays as the cornerstone of the local community where teachers, students, parents, carers and the general com...munity gather to learn. Stay tuned to our Facebook and Instagram page this week as we celebrate teaching and learning at Ku-ring-gai High School. Learning Snapshot: Can humans make electricity? Year 7 students are learning about the 'flow of charges' in two different types of devices in Science. By rubbing two surfaces together we can transfer charges from one place to another. When one object has more charge than the other, it is able to generate electricity! Students learn how this concept can be used to transmit information over a long distance, and how electricity has revolutionised our lives. 15.01.2022 Reece Prosper graduated from Ku-Ring-Gai High School in 2017 studying Dance and Drama from Year 7 through to Year 12. Halfway through his final year of school, Reece auditioned for Brent Street Performing Arts in the hopes of pursuing full-time dance college in the following year. He soon learned that would become a reality, successfully auditioning to start in 2018. Reece said, Full time was one of the best and worst things I’ve ever done. Dancing five days a week for seve...n hours a day tends to have a strain on your body. Luckily, I got to do all this dancing with my best friend Gelina Enriquez, another Ku-Ring-Gai High School alumni student. Halfway through his year at Brent Street, Disneyland Paris held auditions in Sydney. Reece’s dream has always been to work in children’s entertainment in any way, making this audition extremely important to him. After a gruelling audition process, Reece landed an extensive contract in Paris, performing in one of the biggest companies in the world. Having to leave his family, friends, job and overall lifestyle to live alone on the other side of world was the most difficult thing he has ever had to do. Reece has now been living in Paris for two years, dancing in many shows and parades throughout Disneyland. He is also very good friends with some royalty such as Prince Phillip from Sleeping Beauty and Prince Florian from Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. Reece said, Having the ability to make kids smile and laugh, as well as making their dreams come true, is one of the most rewarding things I could ask for. Ku-Ring-Gai High School was one of the most accepting high schools, being so encouraging of what I wanted to do in life and assisting me with auditions and performances. Thank you for being a part of my journey to adulthood.

14.01.2022 In Week 4, the Year 10 cohort engaged in the annual bstreetsmart Driver Safety course which delivered a pertinent message in an incredibly confronting manner. While usually run as a multischool convention, due to Covid-19 the presentation took on a different format this year as a live online stream, which fortunately did not detract from its direct address, particularly with the live online question function which our students took advantage of. Realistic dramatisations of ...car crashes and how our emergency services and Crash Investigation Unit manage these scenes, left the students in stunned silence. With first-hand accounts of crash survivors and patient point of view scenarios in emergency wards, there were covered eyes, covered ears, gasps and some tears from our students in response. Year 10 came to some critical realisations of the severe penalties that can eventuate from one moment of lost concentration, or one poor decision on the road, as drivers and passengers alike, and they are commended for their maturity and engagement with this program. Ms. Hewett, Year 10 Adviser

14.01.2022 Today Ku-ring-gai High School students participated in International Women's Day activities. The theme of the day was #ChooseToChallenge as a challenged world is an alert world. Individually, we're all responsible for our own thoughts and actions - all day, every day. Collectively, we can all help create an inclusive world. A group of students from Years 10 and 11 represented Ku-ring-gai High School in a virtual Young Women’s Leadership Seminar to discuss women in leadership.... The seminar included a keynote presentation by Rae Cooper, Professor of Gender, Work and Employment Relations at Sydney University. Rae received an Order of Australia in 2019, for her contributions to higher education and to workplace policy and practice. The program was an opportunity for our students to meet an inspiring leader who can speak on personal and professional experiences, and who can help young women aspire to leadership roles. In addition, a panel of female members discussed highlights, challenges, and opportunities they have experienced in their careers. Our students also took part in a scavenger hunt across the school at lunchtime. Students were given question sheets and had to explore each of our blocks to find information about some inspiring women. From challenge comes change, so let's all choose to challenge. #IWD2021

14.01.2022 The enthusiastic musicians in our Ku-ring-gai High School Concert Band had an unforgettable experience last term, when they were fortunate enough to participate in industry-led workshops facilitated by Carlo Antonioli. Carlo Antonioli is a conductor and saxophonist. A recipient of the Alan Bellhouse Memorial Award for Conducting and the Ada Thompson Prize for Postgraduate Students, he completed a Master of Music Studies (Conducting) at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in 20...17 and a Bachelor of Music (Performance) with First Class Honours in 2015. Carlo is currently the Assistant Conductor to the West Australian Symphony Orchestra. He was a participant in the Symphony Services International Conductor Development Program in 2015-2016, working with the Tasmanian, Adelaide, and West Australian Symphony Orchestras and the Opera Australia Orchestra, and was one of eleven conductors selected for the inaugural Australian Conducting Academy with the TSO in 2018. In addition, he has worked with many of Sydney’s community and youth orchestras, including Sydney Youth Orchestras, the Eastern Sydney Chamber Orchestra, Orange Symphony Orchestra, Kuringai Youth Orchestra, and a variety of self-formed ensembles. He is also a passionate educator, having worked for many years developing school music programs in Sydney. This was a fantastic experience for our students. Thank you to our Concert Band conductor Ms. Yvonne Brown and Mr. Evanoff for arranging this event.

13.01.2022 COVID might have delayed our final wellbeing camp for the cohort of 2021, but this week we finally made it happen. It may have looked a little different, but the opportunities and experiences will no doubt remain with these students for years to come. After incredible Tomorrow Man and Tomorrow Woman sessions earlier in the week, on Wednesday, students took part in essential life skills workshops, including Car Maintenance, which taught our students how to change a tyre, how ...to check tyre pressure, checking oil and coolant levels and what to look out for when buying a second-hand car. They participated in sessions focused on Medicare, Tax and Voting, Stress Management and also heard talks from the NSW Police about safe driving, safe partying, and their digital footprint. Students were given an insight into the work of the NSW Police Force and were given the opportunity to ask many and varied questions. The school service challenges saw our students presented with an opportunity to give back to the students, staff and teachers in our learning community. Our Year 12s cleared recycling from classrooms, cleaned whiteboards and replaced clock batteries whilst others ran handball and dodgeball tournaments for students in Year 7 to 11. Students wrote notes to spread cheer and distributed packets of seeds to plant happiness. It was fantastic to see all of our Year 12 students smiling as they ran their initiatives and right throughout their final school camp. New friendships were formed. Existing friendships were strengthened. Lifelong memories were made. We are so proud of the positive contributions they have all made to Ku-ring-gai High School. Mr. J.Redshaw, Year 12 Adviser

12.01.2022 This week, Year 12 experienced their final school camp, which in fitting with the current climate, was delivered in a less conventional format. Breaking stereotypes and building relationships were key themes explored by Year 12 girls in the Tomorrow Woman workshop. Students brainstormed and reflected upon the expectations and challenges facing young women, questioning why and how stereotypes and structural limitations still persist for women in contemporary society. ... Through sharing both similar and different experiences as young women who strive for change, new and stronger relationships and respect were formed. Students left the session feeling connected and supported and agreed to regularly check in with each other as they move through their final year of school. Mr. J.Redshaw, Year 12 Adviser, and Ms. E.Johnston, Year 12 Assistant Adviser Students taking part in one of our life-skills workshops during our Year 12 Wellbeing Camp.

12.01.2022 The Anzac Commemoration ceremony is traditionally a respectful reflective occasion at Ku-ring-Gai High School. Unfortunately, in 2020 we were unable to hold our commemoration ceremony. Today we reflect on the service and sacrifice of those who have served our nation in conflicts past and present.... In the words of Colonel Arthur Burke OAM (Retd.) the Spirit of ANZAC is not confined to the battlefield. It lives in the schools, on the sports fields, in fact, all over these great countries of Australia and New Zealand. The sun invades our bodies and makes us 'mad'; mad for freedom - freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom to live and think as you will. The Spirit of ANZAC is not something we can see but a powerful driving sensation that can only be felt. It is a feeling that burns in the heart of every Australian and New Zealand countryman. A warm, tender, fiery, even melancholy ideal that nurtures intense patriotism in the innermost soul of everybody. Many foundation ANZACs died, but their glorious challenge to catch the thrown torch shouts loud and strong to all. Their goal was freedom for the land they loved. The Spirit of ANZAC is invincible. It is the flame that burns forevermore in the heart of every true Australian and New Zealander. Click below to watch 'Anzac' by Mr. Redshaw.

12.01.2022 Last Friday Girls Open Knockout Football was played at the North Turramurra Recreation Area against Pennant Hills High School. An enjoyable contest saw us concede only 4 goals against a determined attack. Our defence held on many occasions and, at the other end, we created a few opportunities to score. It was a tough day to play, with heat and humidity cutting our bare eleven players down in strength at times. However, the girls enjoyed the experience and were revived at the ...end of the game by Slushies, thanks to the generosity of Libby's Mum. Mr. Klein

09.01.2022 Last month we posted about 2019 graduate Oliver Kirk’s Visual Arts Higher School Certificate Body of Work being exhibited at ART NORTH, an annual exhibition celebrating the artistic strength and creativity of students in Sydney's North Shore. You can read about Oliver's work titled Insight below. Insight... Expressive Form: Painting Media: Watercolour, acrylic, gouache and fine liner on aquarelle paper "My Body of Work, through its exploration of my own experience with visual impairment, (P.H.P.V.) showcases how the perception of misfortune alters how appreciative, and ultimately how happy and content we are in life. This is portrayed through three self-portraits, Portrait 1 (Blue) 0.3/20 Vision, Portrait 2 (Pink) Blind Love, and Portrait 3 (Yellow) I’m Not Winking. This is emphasised in my art-making process ranging from objective photographs taken of myself, image manipulation of photos in Photoshop and beaming up photographs onto large paper using a deteriorating projector. This forced me to produce something original, inspired by objective reality. In other words, the artworks are my perceptions of my world. The inclusion of the banksias, in the middle work, acted as a symbol of rebirth as I could literally embrace my left eye. I display that I am coming to terms with my impaired vision, coming to terms with my misfortune, while also demonstrating the healthiness of my right eye which is able to stand on its own. The figures leap from the artwork, due to the contrast between the characters and the backgrounds. Del Kathryn Barton has greatly influenced my artistic style. Her artworks capture her surreal perspective of her world, and by appropriating her style I envision and expose my own views of reality."

04.01.2022 Social distancing requirements have led to a drastic change in the way we interact. Gatherings that we have always taken for granted, such as our school Anzac assembly and Anzac Day commemorations have been banned or modified and we have had to find new ways to adapt. This year's Yom Hashoah commemoration was a very important one, marking 75 years since the liberation of the death camps and concentration camps in Nazi Germany at the end of World War II. Each year, the number ...of survivors decreases, so it is vitally important to ensure the collective memory of The Holocaust (or Shoah) is sustained. This event is normally held at Masada College each year but, this year, the organisers prerecorded the event and made it available on Facebook and YouTube. A very moving ceremony, it reminded us of the need for vigilance in the face of resurgent anti-Semitism around the world. All students in Year 10 Mandatory History at Ku-ring-gai High School complete a unit of study of The Holocaust and make a site visit to the Sydney Jewish Museum. Additionally, students study a range of texts across year groups in English that deal with issues of The Holocaust and other forms of prejudice. If you wish to view the Yom Hashoah commemoration, it is available at https://youtu.be/_t6CvYLe7-Q .

This annual exhibition presents works developed by Visual Arts students for their 2019 HSC examination. The gallery, located on the boundary of the Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby region, invited local schools to nominate their outstanding art students. In the HSC Body of Work, students develop an independent approach to their artmaking, responding to issues of personal interest or concern and developing expertise in a chosen art media. 03.01.2022 Rachel and Madison are worthy winners of the 2019 Peter Markwick Poetry Cup and received their prizes last week in front of their Year 10 peers. Students are asked in Term 4 each year to submit poetry written in Year 9, usually as part of their course work, on a given theme. The poetry is judged and rewarded in Year 10. The theme for 2019 was to pen a message of hope or happiness in a turbulent world. ... Rachel wrote about the joy and love that is engendered by the Sakura, or Japanese cherry blossom each year. Madison wrote about the love of a mother for her baby. Both prizewinners demonstrated the effectiveness of simplicity and economy of language in creating powerful and emotive images. All the other entrants will receive English Faculty merit awards. The competition, formerly the Bill Eason Poetry Cup, has been run for many years at the school, sponsored by the competition patron and alumnus of Ku-ring-gai High School, the late-Mr Peter Markwick. His wife, Ms Cheryl Tait, a career educator herself, was keen to perpetuate the competition following the death of Mr Markwick and the competition will continue to run with her support and generosity. Pictured: Mr Klein, Relieving Head Teacher English, with Rachel and Madison receiving their prizes.

03.01.2022 Late last term, Year 11 Legal Studies students participated in a mock trial. Students played a variety of roles including barristers, witnesses, jurors, court officers and a judge. When asked about their experience participating in the Mock Trial, Year 11 students James and Logan said, It was a great insight into the criminal justice process and a uniq...ue opportunity to experience technical court procedures. After a long drawn deliberation, the jurors found the defendant not guilty beyond a reasonable doubt and the accused was released (to the bus lines). Ms Martz

01.01.2022 "To my glorious comrades..." The Anzac Commemoration ceremony is a respectful reflective occasion at Ku-ring-Gai High School. On Friday, our School Captains led a ceremony for students, teachers, staff, and guests at the Sphinx Memorial to commemorate all who served and those who died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations. The Sphinx Memorial was hewn from surrounding bush sandstone by 5756 Pte. W. T. Shirley as a memorial to his fallen comrades in the Australi...an Imperial Force (A.I.F.), the Sphinx is approximately 1/8th the size of the Great Sphinx, located on Egypt’s Giza Plateau. Between 1926-1928, an ailing Shirley laboured at creating his personal memorial to his fallen comrades. The Sphinx took some one and a half years to complete. He died in 1929, leaving an unusual legacy in stone to be contemplated by the many bushwalkers who enjoy the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. Matthew, Year 9, marched as part of the 3 Wing Australian Air Force Cadets Band in the Anzac Day 2021 Sydney March. You can view the coverage of the march at the following link: https://youtu.be/64Z-t8EQdTI?t=441 It was also wonderful to see members of our school community represented as members of the cadets, Rural Fire Service, and other contingents at the 2021 Anzac Dawn service at Hornsby Cenotaph. We are very proud of our students for their display of respect and commemoration. Lest we forget.
