22.01.2022 A great demonstration of the ZNKR seitei kata by Otake Toshiyuki Sensei, Kyoshi 8 Dan Jodo. Otake Sensei visited Canberra in May 2019. https://youtu.be/Yn3C8h4imQY

22.01.2022 Slowly returning to training on Thursday nights.

19.01.2022 Wednesday (8th July) Aikido.

19.01.2022 No need for flashiness or over the top reactions. The mind is one with the target. No thinking MUSHIN

18.01.2022 Not sure who saw this shared on the Zen Ken Ren Iaido & Jodo page but towards the end the guy visits Namitome Sensei’s dojo. For those who don’t know, Namitome Sensei led a delegation to the Australian IJSC in 2016 (Perth) and 2017 (Melbourne).

17.01.2022 Naginata training with sune-ate (shin guards unique to Naginata).

17.01.2022 Naginata is still quite popular in Japan, specially in High Schools around the country. Beautiful to watch , amazing to practice.

17.01.2022 Hopefully I captured everyone getting back into the swing of Jodo (11th July).

17.01.2022 So....... Now that everyone has got their equipment from under the lounge, pulled their keiko gi out of their training bag and realised it needs a wash, and realised that the inactivity of the last few weeks has not been kind to you and you will need to ease back into training.......I HAVE AN UPDATE. Unfortunately, despite the ACT Gov relaxing the restrictions on community sports indoors, their website says that community facilities are not allowed to have indoor sports.... https://www.covid19.act.gov.au//faqs-/community-facilities Since the Cook Community Hall is clearly a community facility, the management have said they need to seek further clarification on what is allowed. They are sympathetic to our needs and working very hard in our favour but since the centre is owned by ACT Gov they have to be compliant. They are not predicting a clear decision in the sort term and based on my discussion today with them, I am not expecting us to be able to use the facility BEFORE JULY. Therefore we will NOT be starting back next week. Further updates will be posted as more information is received.

13.01.2022 Due to the unavailability of instructors there will be no Iaido/Jodo training tonight (Thursday 19th March). Please note that there has been no other cancellation of training at this point.

13.01.2022 Hope everyone is well out there!! Fish Kendo - developed in secret after Monty Python showed off their fish slapping technique several decades ago.

11.01.2022 In light of the most recent announcement by the Prime Minister of Australia regarding mandatory quarantine for international travellers to Australia, and the increasing number of infections of Covid-19 within our national borders, the Australian Iaido Jodo Seminar and Championships (AIJSC) 2020 scheduled for late May have been cancelled.

10.01.2022 Last night the Kuroyama Budokai instructor group and friends enjoyed an evening experiencing a different kind of edged weapon. Successful urban axe throwing seemed to need us to break almost all our Iaido rules of posture and balance.

08.01.2022 This is one reason why we insist on examining Iaito that have been purchased without first discussing with an instructor.

07.01.2022 For those who had the privilege of receiving teaching from Oda Sensei, some kind words in rememberance (from Kolb Sensei in Qld).

06.01.2022 If only we weren’t in lockdown we could be trying this.

06.01.2022 With the announcement yesterday by the ACT Government regarding further easing of COVID restrictions, I am pleased to advise that we plan return to training from Wednesday 3 June (next week). A Return to Training plan consistent with Govt requirements for Community Sports groups has been emailed to all enrolled student.

05.01.2022 Saturday Iaido 11th July class.

04.01.2022 So after the false start for June, the Cook Community Hall management has advised that the Hall is now available for use. Combined with ACTGov easing of restrictions for indoor sport, Kuroyama Budokai training can recommence from Wed 1 July. There are some initial timetable adjustments so please continue to check calendar on the website. Wed from 1 Jul:... Jodo: 1830-1930 Iaido: 1930-2030 Thu from 9 Jul: Jodo: 1830-1930 Iaido: 1930-2030 Sat from 4 Jul: Jodo: 0930-1020 Iaido: 1020-1110 Sun from 5 Jul: Kyudo: 1745-1915 Naginata: 1745-1915 New members are always welcome but please email [email protected] first - due to COVID restrictions we cannot accept unannounced prospective students or observers.

02.01.2022 I have stayed at Shunkoin Temple in several occasions and highly recommend Rev. Takafumi’s Zen sessions. He speaks English fluently and always presented his teachings in the context of mindfulness.

01.01.2022 The Senior Instructor Group of Kuroyama Budokai have carefully considered the updated restrictions regarding COVID19. Whilst we believe that there are ways in which training can be conducted in the dojo which technically is within the guidelines, we also believe that the spirit of Budo includes social responsibility. We believe that social responsibility at this time means avoiding any social activity that is not essential. Even though we value our training highly, we canno...t consider it essential. We are therefore suspending all training from today until the end of this current term (last day of term is Sunday 26 April). We will continue to monitor restrictions and health advisories and recommence training when appropriate. The Event Calendar available on our website will be kept updated to reflect when training recommences.

01.01.2022 So I have been using the time waiting to recommence training, to connect with a variety of different people around world regarding Interests in various aspect of Budo. I stumbled across a guy in an Aikido group whose hobby is sketching and he kindly produced versions of the photos from our website.

24.12.2021 On several occasions when I have visited Kyoto I have attended Zen meditation sessions at Shunkoin Temple (and stayed there). For anyone who has the free time (and isn’t attending Iaido/Jodo keiko) this Saturday I recommend this session by Rev. Kawakami.

17.12.2021 If you are attending training at Kuroyama Budokai please ensure that you are compliant with ACT Health directives. - make sure that you are wearing a mask when inside the facility except when actually undertaking training. - checks in via the Check in Canberra App.
