23.01.2022 Event Name: Biodiversity resilience in Sydney and Surrounds Event Date: 26 October 2018 Event Time: 9:30am - noon Event location: Hawkesbury Campus (HW-L2.G.30)... Event Description: The conversion, fragmentation and degradation of natural ecosystems in urban areas across the Sydney Basin has had significant impacts on biodiversity and has led to the emergence of new threats associated with pollution, pests and invasive species, climate extremes and tense interactions between people and nature. At the same time, the value that biodiversity contributes to cities, livability and health are increasingly being recognised. This event will highlight work contributing to the protection of threatened natural areas in urban/peri-urban environments in Sydney and surrounds. In the first session, ‘urban biodiversity status and threats’, participants will share recent updates on some of the major issues facing flora and fauna in our neighbourhoods and associated woodlands and waterways. The second session, ‘promise for the future’, will highlight activities aimed at restoring and reintroducing biodiversity in and around Sydney and the benefits that can arise through interactions with social systems. These will focus on the outcomes from partnerships with Greening Australia, Hort Innovation, Office of Environment and Heritage, Royal Botanic Gardens, RCE Greater Western Sydney and others. This will be followed by roundtable discussions identifying opportunities to close key knowledge gaps and to identify new threats on the horizon.
