25.01.2022 Bolduans Bay Oysters Pty Ltd, now commonly known as Tarkine Fresh Oysters, have been in the industry since 1979 and have always had the mission of growing the best possible oysters that Tasmania could deliver. Shucking only small quantities at a time, to ensure visitors get the freshest possible oysters, the creamy texture and sweet, white flesh, combined with iodine rich saltiness of the sea makes each mouthful a delight. Their retail outlet was opened in late 2017 to showca...se the fine produce the area has to offer. Priding themselves in delivering the freshest possible oysters to the table, the cafe offers a range of fresh and cooked variations of oyster plus their secret recipe seafood chowder, naturally featuring their oysters, which has become a signature dish. You can find @tarkinefreshoysters in our newest book Eat Drink Love Tasmania 2.

25.01.2022 This image still makes me smile 25 years after it was taken. We have it as an Icetile, the amazing acrylic blocks that we offer to our portrait clients. When I think about my two daughters at that age, this is the image that sums it all up for me. We would love to see your "defining images" -the ones that you would never part with

25.01.2022 The trouble with dogs is that they live their lives 7 times faster than us, but they are no less part of the family and I always make sure to try and get some photos during a family portrait session. Working with children and animals has its challenges, but it is always worth the effort!

24.01.2022 We went to New York because I have an image hanging in an exhibition that was going to open in Grand Central Station. One of the images in my mind, that I wanted to make while I was in NY was a view from the top of the Guggenheim looking down onto the courtyard below. Its been done before, but I still wanted to have a try and see if I could make an image. When we got there I was initially dismayed to find that there were all these wire mesh hangings running the full length of... the building from top to bottom which made a shot looking down totally impossible. The worst part was that these mesh hangings were only up for a week, and this was a test run for an exhibition that was going to be held later in the year, so all they did was stop me from making the shot that I came there for. Because you can't let inanimate objects beat you , and because I have always believed that when there is a difficulty in taking a picture, you should try to use the difficulty to make a new picture ,I found a different view that worked quite well. 23.01.2022 The American west. This image is familiar to anyone that has ever seen a western. Shot at dawn in Monument Valley, It was taken from John Ford Point, named after the movie director that shot many of the iconic western movies of the mid 1900's. Movies like Stagecoach and Fort Apache. All that is missing is a stagecoach being chased by a band of Indian braves on ponies,

22.01.2022 Getting the grandkids all together in the same place at the same time can be difficult, but it is so totally worth the effort! everyone enjoyed that shoot!

21.01.2022 Russell falls in the south of Tasmania is a very easily accessible water fall in the Mt Field National Park. This image is from our book Eat Drink Love Tasmania which is full of beautiful places and yummy recipes from Tasmania

20.01.2022 New Post up on the blog!! Check it out here: https://kuruvita.com.au//entry/160-photographs-in-your-home

19.01.2022 There is a special bond that forms between grand parents and their grand kids, and getting to capture that in the studio is a real pleasure. Sometimes mum will come too, and while we are always happy to take a 3 generations picture, the real relationship between grand parents and grand kids often doesn't emerge until mum has left the studio!

18.01.2022 75 years is a long time, but that is what our lab is offering by way of a no questions asked , unconditional replacement guarantee for all their canvas wall hanging products! Only last week we delivered a completely new set of wall canvas prints to a family who went through the trauma of having their house and all its contents burn to the ground. To be able to say to them that replacing their precious wall art was something we could organise for them at totally no cost was a real pleasure.

18.01.2022 Portfolio boxes are a very intimate way of looking at pictures. Not everyone has lots of wall space, and sometimes there are images from a shoot that dont make it onto the wall but are still an important part of your family story. For these images our portfolio boxes are perfect. pull them out when the family is around and pass the individually matted prints from person to person. They never fail to generate great conversation and happy memories

18.01.2022 Its a familiar problem, kids grow up and leave home, its what we want them to do, but it is still bitter sweet when you walk down the corridor and you know that their room is empty. Finding the time to get everyone together is also a tough one, the more complicated life gets the harder it is to find the time, but it is so worth it to try! I know all about these feelings as we have do this twice, and while we are all back in Tassie now, we had 8 years where Sam was living in Melbourne and seeing her was not the daily event it is now. Making family portraits that will fill your home with happy memories is what we do! we have been doing this for Launceston families for over 30 years and we would love to show you how we can do the same for you

17.01.2022 Thinking about Christmas presents??? We got you covered!

16.01.2022 We are so lucky to have the Cataract Gorge right on our doorstep. The light streaming in through the trees in the late afternoon makes this a magical spot for a family portrait.

16.01.2022 3 generations! I am always on the look out for multiple generation shots because I know that they become more and more important as time goes by. # generations is usually just a matter of organising everyone to be in the same palace at the same time. 4 generations is harder, and getting 5 generations together happens very rarely and requires good genes in both longevity and early childbearing! If you can get 5 generations together , or you know someone who can , we are always interested in making some photographs. We offer a complementary photography session and a $100 print credit just so that we can take the pictures and use them in our social media and blog advertising. We would love to hear from you!

15.01.2022 the secret to great expressions is interaction! forget about forced smiles aimed at the camera, I like to photograph the relationship that exists between people. The added bonus is that once I have captured this great moment between Geoff and Evelynn all I have to do is get them to look at me, and the happiness on their faces will still be there.

14.01.2022 You can find the recipe for @east_coast_village_providore 's Pyengana Lamb rack, plus many more in our book Eat Drink Love Tasmania 2 which is now available.

12.01.2022 Whether is the birth of a new family member or the fact that everyone is getting together for the first time in months, capturing a generational family portrait is always a great option. As families get bigger and the kids get older, just getting everybody in the same place at the same time is a challenge, so when it does happen, make sure you give us a call!

11.01.2022 Sometimes I feel like a bit of a broken record, but every time we make a picture of Mum and her kids I am reminded that these are the rarest images on mum's iPhone. She is always taking pictures of the kids, and when dad is there, of him and the kids, but all too often , mum is not in any of the pictures. In years to come, when these girls have daughters of their own, these pictures will be so important to all of them. And you know from personal experience that when looking at a picture of your own mum, you never think " that's my mum, I love her, but I wish she had lost a few pounds, or had her hair cut before the photo shoot" no one ever thinks like that, your kids wont either, they will just be glad that they have some beautiful pictures of you all together

09.01.2022 In the studio, I am looking for a simple elegant image that will look good for 100 years! Remember all those pictures from the 70's where the first reaction is " oh my god, what are they wearing"! Once the clothes and the lighting has been sorted, all I have to do is get you to relax and look like you like each other!

09.01.2022 Antelope Canyon is a slot canyon in Arizona, on Navajo land. As the sun travels across the sky, the light comes down one side of the canyon, and then back up the other. For most of the day, the canyon is dark, with a bright patch of light where the sunlight is hitting, but for a couple of minutes each day the light comes straight in and hits the floor, and it lights up the whole place. I handful of dirt thrown into the beam of light gives it dimension and a person moving through the the light/dust is recorded as a ghostlike shape.

08.01.2022 Dawn on the top of kunanyi / Mount Wellington. A must do item on just about every bodies what to do in Hobart list. Gathered there at dawn, there are locals and visitors from all around the world. The wind can be ferocious up there, and even if it is a warm balmy morning down by the docks, it certainly pays to bring a jacket with you. A beanie and gloves are recommended also, and if you think that is just during the winter months, think again, it has snowed up there on Christmas day, so anything is possible.

08.01.2022 Fish Frenzy is literally on the water, on Elizabeth Street Pier, in the centre of Hobart’s busy waterfront precinct. This is where it all happens. If you are here during the New Year you will be surrounded by all of the boats of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race who have been finishing this classic 630 nautical mile ocean race from Sydney to the docks in Hobart since 1945. The bi-annual Wooden Boat Festival, the largest wooden boat festival in the Southern Hemisphere, is also... held here in February with up to 500 wooden boats and over 200,000 visitors and Fish Frenzy is there, right in the middle of the action. Most days you can be absorbed by the crew of the Lady Nelson, the full size replica of the original Deptford built Brig built in 1798 that is moored right beside the Pier. They climb the rigging and work on the vessel, preparing it for another day on the water while a fleet of powerful tourist boats, fishing boats and other recreational craft come and go throughout the day in a never ending parade that will keep you entertained for hours.

07.01.2022 The arrival of a new baby is a time of transition for the whole family, but especially for the first born. Having to share the attention of Mum and Dad with a brother or sister, especially in the first few months when they are so demanding can be difficult, but they will grow up to be the best of friends, and that feeling of caring for and looking after the younger sibling will always be there.

07.01.2022 We love it when our clients send in pictures of our portraits " in the wild" This is a perfect example of how our design software helps design a set of images that fit perfectly into the available space

07.01.2022 Family visiting from interstate is always a good reason for organising group portraits. This year has been one of the hardest for this type of get together, but hopefully there is light at the end of the tunnel and as the boarders open up, we will be able to gather as families once again.

07.01.2022 Over the years I have photographed many trees, and this ( internet )famous tree at binnalong bay on Tasmania's east coast was one I wanted to find for quite a while. It has been photographed many times before, in all sorts of weather conditions and from all sorts of angles. We have often said that concert pianists don't only play concerts, they also need to do lots of practice, and so it is with photographers. You need to get up early and get out there with your camera to ma...ke pictures so that when you come face to face with that once in a lifetime moment, you have the skills and the practice to get the shot. With this in mind, it is good to head off to make images that you know have been done before, to see if you can make a new interpretation of the scene, but if not, at least get some of that much needed practice in. This image looks awesome printed on a high gloss metallic paper that really brings out the subtle colours in the sky, and the texture in the rocks. See more

06.01.2022 Moments like this are what I am waiting for. When the fact that they are at a photography studio having portraits made is forgotten. The world is shut out and all that exists is a mother and her baby. Neither of them are concerned about anything else in the world. Its just one on one connection that will last for the rest of their lives, and when this happens, I try to press the shutter button as quietly as I can so as not to break the magic

06.01.2022 It has been a while since I have photographed these two- I think we worked out about 14 years! One of the joys of my job is that I get to reconnect with people time and time again, and I get to hear about how important the images that I made for them all those years ago are still cherished and enjoyed everyday. The girls have all grown up now, and while we made pictures of the whole family together , it was nice to make a simple couple shot of the two of them that shows the closeness and joy they share.

05.01.2022 The boardwalk on Liberty Island New York. Taken from the top of the ferry, I have another image taken a short time after this one with the crowd covering the boardwalk. This image has a 1930's feel about it and makes the place look deserted when in fact it was a riot of colour with people from all around the world just seconds later

05.01.2022 Shooting for my book Eat Drink Love Tasmania 2, this recipe is from the archives of the Highfield historic site in Stanley. Highfield house was built between 1832 and 1835 and the recipe and the china are from that early period.

04.01.2022 Heading down to Hobart from Launceston there are a number of side trips that you can take. Many of the little towns that the highway used to travel through have now been bypassed. This church is in Kempton, which now has another reason to take the detour - a whiskey distillery!

04.01.2022 Getting the whole family together can be difficult! and this time, getting all the grand children in the same place at the same time has proved impossible, so we are working on a collection of images which, eventually, will have Jillian and all of her grand children in the same place on her wall.

03.01.2022 The image that Grandma was looking for! the two grandchildren, looking like they like each other, and smiling at the camera. With these two it was easy, it is not always so when photographing siblings this age, and you can never tell until you try it - some days it works and some days it is totally impossible but that is just how it goes

02.01.2022 Whitebait seems to be a bit of a niche, both in the fishing for and the cooking/eating departments! The fishing side of things I could take or leave, not really my idea of a good day fishing - no screaming reels or epic battles between man and fish here. The cooking side if things is really quite simple, dredge in seasoned flour and deep fry is the way I tried them although whitebait patties seems to be a favorite thing. Its in the eating department that I see myself fitting, they are delicious, and seem to work best with a really clod beer!

01.01.2022 My Dad was on an endless quest to recreate the flavours of his native Sri Lanka, starting from his time in London during the 50’s and 60’s. There was no internet, cookbooks or tv shows back then - all he had was the memory of how things had tasted when his mother cooked for him, and the desire to figure it out. His willingness to experiment, to taste and adjust, and to have a clear picture in his mind of the flavours that he was trying to achieve is a good starting point for ...any cook. My brother Peter has gone on to international acclaim for his ability as a chef, and all three of us brothers are active and happy in the kitchen (it’s a good thing for our household, because my wife Vicki’s attempt to boil eggs back in the early 80’s went so badly that she has hardly been in the kitchen since!) This recipe for Ambul Thial ( Black Fish Curry ) is from our Sri Lankan roots, and is part of my brother Peter’s beautiful book Serendip My Sri Lankan Kitchen (Murdoch Books 2009) in which he has collected recipes from all over Sri Lanka. If only Dad could have had this book when he was feeling homesick and lonely in London all those years ago. Capturing the taste of home and being able to transport his tastebuds would have been a very simple matter if he had. When Peter was writing his book, his publisher sent us both over to Sri Lanka for 10 days. Peter collected recipes and I took many of the pictures that illustrate the book. It was a magical journey, the longest time we had spent together since I had left home, and will always remain a very happy memory. The fish curry tastes exactly as I remember it and it is certainly worth taking the time to cook this one.

01.01.2022 Schouten Island, at the bottom of the Freycinet peninsular on Tasmania's east cost has been a favorite destination for our family for decades. It is also a favorite photography subject for me so this distant view of the whole island sitting on the horizon caught my eye and I decided to make a picture. Using a long exposure allowed me to smooth out the detail in the sea in the foreground, which in turn softened the rocks that make up the bottom half of the image. The clouds moved during the exposure creating the streaking effect and I was quite happy with the result.

01.01.2022 Whats not to like about being a food photographer! These oysters with a couple of different dressings were on set in case we needed them to style one of the other dishes we were photographing for my Island Catch book. in the end we didn't use them as a recipe, just as a filler image on the page, but they sure did taste good! Island Catch Seafood of Tasmania has a heap of great recipes including quite a few for oysters
