25.01.2022 Horse-people mostly think about horses from a humanistic perspective. The use of derogatory terms such as 'nasty', 'stubborn' or 'lazy' and the emphasis on the ...horse's 'attitude' can blur training so that when training doesn't work we excuse ourselves by blaming the horse. Such terms imply the horse is 'born that way' and will never change. While horses vary in their genetic tendencies to behave in particular ways, these characteristics have significant learned components and can, therefore, be unlearned or suppressed, and better still avoided. Humanistic terms disempower us as trainers because they provide no useful answers for retraining the 'problem' or difficult horse. Worse, they lead to beliefs that place unfair expectations on the horse and often create further conflict through punishments and incorrect reinforcement strategies that are beyond the horse's mental abilities. More horses would succeed to higher levels and fewer would be wasted if training were more closely aligned with the horse's learning capabilities from the start; prevention is always better than cure. Furthermore, learning can be accelerated in all horses to optimal levels when trainers fully understand what they are doing beyond 'second nature' functional abilities. It is every horse-person's responsibility to understand the horse as completely as possible. Evidence-based horse training is our way to protect the welfare of the horse. Deep dive into this matter with our Academic Horse Training book: https://www.esi-education.com/prod/academic-horse-training/ (Excerpt from the 'Academic Horse Training' book, p. 9)

25.01.2022 Earlier today (Sunday 18 October) the Premier of Victoria, Mr Dan Andrews, advised of the easing of some restrictions for Metropolitan Melbourne and Regional Vi...ctoria effective from 11.59pm tonight. The Premier also outlined further easing of restrictions effective 1 November 2020 and potential other restrictions being eased, subject to data triggers, from 25 October. We are currently digesting this information and what it means for the Victoria equestrian community. Tomorrow afternoon (Monday 19 October) Equestrian Victoria along with other State Sporting Organisations (SSO's) will participate in a sport specific COVID briefing with representatives of the Victorian Government, including the DHHS and SRV. This forum is facilitated by Vicsport and provides SSO's with the opportunity to clarify COVID Restrictions as they relate to sport. Once we have clarity on what the latest COVID Restrictions mean for equestrian sport we will communicate in collaboration with our colleagues at Pony Club Victoria, HRCAV, RDA Victoria - Riding for the Disabled Association of Victoria and the Victorian Polo Association.

24.01.2022 Hoping for positive news tomorrow!!!

22.01.2022 START WITH THE END IN MIND Dressage aims to develop and strengthen a horse’s body and mind to not only preserve its health, but make it stronger and more balanc...ed than if it were left untrained. When starting under a rider, a young 'green' horse starts with a tense, hollow, weak back. To ‘start with the end in mind’ means to know what our end aim is for the horse, i.e. what does a strong healthy back look like? Can you visualise the difference between a tense, weak hollow back and a relaxed strong one? It's a lot more than an 'outline' or 'head frame'! It is a process. A progression of stages that build one on to the other, connecting the dots to create strength and flexibility. Some people visualise an outline that only involves the horse’s head and neck. They try to create a ‘frame' containing or enclosing the horse between pushing legs and restraining hands. But dressage is not at all about forcing or holding a horse into a frame. The outline of the horse's posture is one of the end results, but not a means to the end. What is the means to the end? Improving balance is more the priority. Balance is the idea to have in mind from the start: lateral and longitudinal. Surely balance is the means by which dressage is measured - and worthy of our study and understanding. A balanced horse is the end aim. We can influence the horse's balance from the beginning, in the early groundwork, in lunging and introducing the bridle in the work in-hand. The sooner we start to focus on balance, the sooner we progress, and the better we prepare a horse for a lifetime of carrying a rider. Balance is the habit we need to support, and through a methodical approach in all schooling. It means collaborating with the horse to solve problems that arise. We can collaborate by tailoring training to the horse’s individual physical needs and natural asymmetry, and then teach the horse to feel and respond to our cues, and engage with us: to start in balance, to move in balance, to re-balance, and to stop in balance. The diagram here shows first an unbalanced horse working in tension. The red muscles on top are tense, while the blue muscles underneath relax and extend. The horse moves with a weak back, which would have trouble to carry a rider. The second diagram shows a horse working in relaxation with a stronger back, stretching more forward. The top line muscles stretch and relax while the belly muscles, in tension, can raise the back now stronger and better able to support a rider. Ideally for a good neck extension the horse's neck would stretch further forward out and down to seek the hands. NOTE: In time, as the horse’s strength and balance improve with a rider, the withers, neck and head carriage would come higher, to further shift the balance to the hindquarters. Illustration: Posture from hollow to neck extension. (Philippe Karl) Twisted Truths of Modern Dressage.

The DHHS is currently updating their website, however, in summary, exercise is allowed within 5km of your home, or 5km from your workplace if you are on the permitted worker list (you must carry your permit). You can go riding within 5km of your home, but only where facilities are not required i.e. you can go for a trail ride within 5km of your home but you cannot go to your local club grounds. You can also exercise within 5km of your workplace if you are a permitted worker, but you will have to carry your permitted worker permit. Exercise and outdoor social activity with members of your household or up to five people (including you, and from a maximum of two households) is permitted so long as you do not travel more than 5km. This must be in a public outdoor space and does not apply to people’s backyards or outdoor spaces connected to a home. You must limit your exercise to no more than two hours per day in total. Indoor facilities remain closed, unless you are a professional athlete, facility owner (where the facility is not open to the public) or are exempt under high performance guidelines (a permit is required) Restrictions related to exercising your horse on animal welfare grounds remain unchanged Coaching (in person) is still prohibited until such time as Metropolitan Melbourne reaches Step 3 restrictions. 20.01.2022 Why do I like horses? I think I must be mad. My mother wasn’t horsey - and neither was my dad. But the madness hit me early - and hit me like a curse. ... And I...’ve never got much better. In fact, I’ve just got worse. ...My stables are immaculate. My house is like a hovel. Last year for my birthday - I got a brand-new shovel. I hardly read a paper - but I know who’s sold their horse. And I wouldn’t watch the news - unless Mr Ed was on, of course. One eye’s always on the heavens - but washing waves in vain. As I rush to get the horses in - in case it’s going to rain. And though they’re wearing 15 rugs, the best that you can get, I bring them in to keep them dry - while I get soaking wet. I spend every pound I’ve got- on horsey stuff for sure. I buy saddles, bridles, fancy rugs - and then I buy some more. I should have had my hair cut - or bought that nice blue shirt, At least it wouldn’t now look ripped and showing up the dirt. I can’t make a bloody sponge cake- so I don’t even try. But I can back up a car and trailer in the twinkling of an eye. It’s jeans and joddy boots that I live in night and day. And that smell of sweaty horses just doesn’t wash away. Once every now and then I dress up for a ball, With make-up and posh hairdo- and high-heel shoes and all. I ache from long-forgotten falls. My knees have got no skin. My toes have gone a funny shape from being squashed again. But late at night, when all is still- and I’ve gone to give them hay, I touch their velvet softness and my worries float away. They give a gentle nicker and they nuzzle through my hair. And I know where my heart is - more here than anywhere!.....

18.01.2022 Following consultation with the relevant government agencies, Equestrian Victoria, HRCAV, PCV and RDAV advise that the current restrictions for Stage 4 Metrop...olitan Melbourne and Stage 3 Regional Victoria, will remain in force until the Victorian Roadmap to Reopening commences from 11:59pm 13 September 2020. Read the current restrictions https://www.vic.equestrian.org.au//EQUESTRIAN%20VICTORIA%2 METROPOLITAN MELBOURNE ROADMAP For Metropolitan Melbourne, the First Step Commences at 11:59pm on 13 September 2020. Restrictions for equestrian activity remain the same as currently in place for Stage 4 - Metropolitan Melbourne. Subject to trigger points and public health advice, the government MAY then move Melbourne Metropolitan to the Second Step from 28 September 2020, but ONLY if those trigger points have been met. We are still awaiting clarification of what the impact on equestrians under Step 2, Metropolitan Melbourne may be. When will Metro Melbourne move to the Second Step Metro Melbourne can move to the second step after 28 September 2020 AND when we reach an average daily case rate in metro Melbourne of 30 to 50 cases over a 14 day period with public health advice regarding transmission source. Links: Website: https://www.vic.gov.au/coronavirus-covid-19-restrictions-ro PDF: http://bit.ly/MelbRoadmap REGIONAL VICTORIA ROADMAP For Regional Victoria, the Second Step commences at 11:59pm on 13 September 2020. Restrictions for equestrian activity remain the same as are currently in place for Stage 3 - Regional Victoria. When will Regional Victoria move to the Third Step When specified trigger points and public health conditions are met, then, the Government MAY move Regional Victoria to Step 3. Those trigger points are when: - Daily average number of cases in the last 14 days in Regional Victoria is less than 5 AND - Less than 0 cases in Regional Victoria with an unknown source in the last 14 days. Links: Website: https://www.vic.gov.au/restrictions-roadmap-regional-victor PDF: http://bit.ly/RegionalRoadmap The current provision to care for your horse/s under animal welfare grounds is still in place. This applies to both Metropolitan Melbourne and Regional Victoria. We must all remember that we are in the middle of a global pandemic. Victoria is at the centre of this pandemic in Australia, and how we all behave over the next few weeks determines how successful or otherwise we emerge on the other side. We understand that there will be disappointment and frustration that there is no further relaxation of restrictions at this point, but we will continue to advocate on behalf of the equestrian community. Once we have further information, we will email all members direct. MATTHEW BROWN CEO - Equestrian Victoria

11.01.2022 I was born and raised in Sydney a big city. My dad was not a handy fellow. He couldn’t fix things or build things. He had many skills and many accomplishments..., but being able to repair or construct things was not one of them. When stuff broke or he needed things made, he called somebody. Whether it was servicing a car, building a fence, painting a room, or fixing a light switch, dad relied on somebody else. As a result, he never taught me to be handy. In that regard, I am definitely my father’s son. I envy friends who can pull apart an engine or watch and fix them. However, since we moved to a more remote area and bought 150 acres and have lots of machines and tools, it has become necessary for me to pick up some skills as a handy guy. I have learned to service the generator and chain saw. I have figured out how to build a fence, hang a gate, and lay a water pipe. The thing that made this possible for me that my dad didn’t have access to is the internet. There is hardly anything that I can’t find on how to do from the internet. Even wading through the complexity of building my web site or publishing my books was figured out via the internet. I don’t know anybody who does not have access to the internet even if it is through a public library. There is so much information out there for everybody to access unlike it was for my dad. So my question is, with the easy access to all this information in the world, why do some people still use barbaric training methods on horses? I’m not talking about just a bias for one type of training over another like choosing the difference between Pat Parelli and Klaus Hempfling. I’m talking about choosing methods that are abusive and inherently cruel, such as tying a horse’s head around to one side for 4 hours to teach them to give to the bit or spurring them until they bleed to teach them to go forward, or tying their head down to a set of hobbles between their front legs to teach them to lower their heads. I’m talking about methods that everybody can recognize as obviously cruel. Why do people still tie up horses to big posts and flood them with plastic bags? Why do people still start 2yo and compete with them? Why do people still beat horses to make them load into a trailer? A few nights ago I was having dinner with some friends and a story came up about a child’s pony that was competing and routinely ridden with a twisted wire bit to control the horse. A few years ago I had a horse in training that I noticed had a lot of scarring in its mouth from the harsh use of bits. Another trainer told me he had a horse that had calluses on the bars of the mouth because the previous owner would slice the mouth with a knife to make it sensitive to the bit. A trainer in Australia has a video available showing a horse with heavy bolts hanging from its halter to teach the horse not to weave. Anytime the horse moved its head it would be whacked in the face with one or more bolts. There are videos of a well-known Dutch trainer who breaks in horses with no preparation. As soon as the horse stops bucking with the saddle, he gets on and rides the horse while another fellow on the ground drives it forward with a whip. In some states of Australia, there is hurdle racing where horses are made to gallop flat-out over jumps and several are killed each year. There is so much information about good training methods and horse welfare that just about everybody can access easily, that it bamboozles me that I sometimes still see methods being used that belong in medieval torture chambers. How can this still be happening? When I was younger, all we had were books and lessons for learning about training. But nowadays, there are DVDs, books, YouTube, internet forums, clinics, and even online courses that are within reach of nearly everybody. It’s almost impossible to avoid them. People no longer have to rely on their fathers or uncles to learn all there is to know about horses and horsemanship. So what is stopping people from learning a better way? Why do some people still resort to barbarism? Is it just a refusal to change or a belief that they are right or a romantic idea about the good ol’ days and tradition? I know most people have good intentions towards their horses and probably nobody sets out to be deliberately cruel or abusive. However, despite good intentions, some people seem to be unaware or lack empathy for how a horse feels. They treat them like they are dumb, disobedient, and even spiteful. They act as if they don’t even like horses. How can this thinking still be so prevalent at a time when there is so much convincing information that horses are not like that and there is a much better way to approach horses? The best relationship a person can have with a horse is based on empathy and an understanding of how it thinks and feels. Why would anybody want a relationship based on conflict, intimidation, and helplessness? Photo: Using a parasol to protect horses from sun exposure is just one of the kindness you'll see at my clinics. It’s just the kind of thoughtful trainer I am.

Keep pushing, your story is so special, and it might be too late before you realise just what you have Be bold, be brave and be bloody brilliant.

03.01.2022 How bit pressure affects the movement of the hindlimb!!! The horses tongue attaches to the Hyoid bone (see photos) The hyoid is Intimately connected to the airw...ays and therefore affects the horses breathing, and is connected to hind limb via fascial. See below Sternohyoideus connects the hyoid to the sternum Omohyoideus connects the hyoid to the inside of the shoulder -Direct connection from the tongue to the sternum and shoulder along the bottom of the horses neck. Tension in the tongue tension in sternum horse cant lift through back to allow for collection- affects hindquarters Small muscles also connect the hyoid bones to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and the poll. The TMJ is an important center for nerves that control the horses balance and proprioception. And the pollits ability to bend and flexis of central concern to the dressage rider. Because of the small muscles connecting them, there is a very close relationship (which few riders know about) between the horses tongue, hyoid bones, TMJ, poll, head, and neck. When the horses tongue is free and soft, all of this translates into a horse who is better able to move well, with coordination, improved balance, and a significantly lengthened stride.(L.Tellington- Jones 2013) L.Tellington-Jones (2013) Dressage with Mind, Body & Soul: A 21st-century Approach to the Science and Spirituality of Riding and Horse-and-rider Well-being.Trafalga Square.
