25.01.2022 Phew! The substantial modifications worked! I like this one. This is my take on the Harmony blouse by Love Notions. I cut the flutter sleeve on the cross (bias); I used facings on the neckline; I sewed the back seam all the way up, not worrying about making an opening; I trimmed the shoulder seams 1cm and cut the front neck about 1.5cm deeper; I made the sleeves wider to ensure they'd fit in the armholes this time; I trimmed the armholes 1cm at the shoulder, tapering to just above bust level; and I did narrow hems on the sleeves and hemline.
20.01.2022 I actually find it quite stressful to buy lots of fabric, and stressful to have piles of it. I think it makes me unusual in sewing circles. The trouble this year is that I've had to buy online (exponentially more stressful, since I can't feel the fabric and mix and match). I recently bought a batch, including some expensive off-white cotton knit material. I prewashed, as you should always do (though I haven't always known this). It came up beautifully, except that a bird po...oped on it on the clothesline. I treated the stain and soaked the fabric. It was only when I hung it out again that I discovered it had gone blotchy. I was very disappointed, but I've spent the money, so I thought using it for an experiment might be a compromise. I have picked through some patterns and ideas and have cut pieces from one pattern for front bodice and back piece of a top, altered another for the skirt of the front, and modified the flutter sleeve from the recent woven pattern I made, again cutting it on the bias. I'm going to attempt a slightly dressy, loose t-shirt with flutter sleeves for summer. I'm hoping the blotchy effect won't be too noticeable. If it works ok, maybe I'll fork out for another new piece to make something better, and this time, watch out for the wretched birds. See more
16.01.2022 Ever a glutton for punishment, I've persevered with this pattern one more time. I've altered the pattern a lot and this time, I've cut the sleeves on the bias for more drape, and have made facings for the neck rather than using bias binding, plus I'm not bothering with a neck opening, since the blouse can go over my head without undoing the button. It's easier not to sew an opening. I do hope I can get it to work, because the fabric is gorgeous.
08.01.2022 There we go, finished yesterday before lunch but didn't have a photographer handy. The bias cut flutter sleeve worked nicely. The adaptation on the front skirt was fine, too. The neckline was very fiddly, with repeated unpicking and redoing and it's still not perfect, but it'll do. The blotchiness isn't too obvious, but the fabric is thin and a little wan in the white. I'm not sure I'll bother buying more, especially at $19 a metre. I so wish we still had the quality of fabric we used to have last century.
06.01.2022 Scrap busting is more my style. I'm going to try getting a pair of shorts from this remnant from the blouse I made the other week. I'm actually going on the cross grain because there wasn't enough width/ length going on the normal grain. I used to do that when I was young. Maybe it'll work.
