24.01.2022 1829 & 1830 Garden Island vessels. 1829 April 25th HMS Challenger (frigate 6th Rate) 28 guns 603 (bm) tons 125 ft 6 inches x 32 ft. Built 1826 Portsmouth Dockyard (UK) Arrived Cockburn Sound from England to assist in the establishment of the Swan River Colony. 1829 May 31st PARMELIA Hired Barque 443 tons 117' 8" x 29' x 20' Built 1825 Quebec, Canada Reg.: London (UK) Made land off Garden Island with Captain (later Governor) Stirling and 54 other passengers. Grounded during... approach to anchorage, and sustained damage. Repaired with HMS Challenger's assistance. 1830 May 14th ROCKINGHAM Ship 4 guns 427 tons Built 1818 Sunderland (UK) Arrived SRC with general cargo for Peel Esq., and passengers. May 21st Went ashore on eastern side of Cockburn Sound. Sold in December to new owner and transferred to Careening Bay, Garden Island. Later abandoned there. [Selected vessels.] See more

24.01.2022 WWI, 1919 Influenza Epidemic, WWII, & 2020 These shall either make you laugh or make you feel comfort in knowing there were periods in the area's (and the world's) heritage when separation from loved ones was needed but eventually ended. This year marks the 75th Anniversary of the end of the Second World War, and it brought development and people to the newly named 'Kwinana', Make something for someone you love or pass it on to someone who needs it.:)

23.01.2022 Remembrance/Armistice Day - On the 11th day of the 11th month 1918 fighting in "The War to End All Wars" (World War I) ceased. Each year we commemorate the day in the hope it would be true. To all of those who served and fought in all wars - Thank-you.

21.01.2022 1945 August 14th - Victory in the Pacific - the end of WWII (Formal surrender 2nd Sept. 1945). Looking back on the struggle to save Australia ('Kokoda Frontline'), and some of the soldiers who served in the Pacific and Europe.

21.01.2022 1966 & 1968 June - Orelia - Plans for the future. In 1966 there was a query as to whether or not the new planned suburb would be called 'Orelia' because it was thought the name was too close to 'Parmelia'. The name derives from the sailing ship Orelia 382 tons built at Prince Edward Island, Canada, in 1826. She called into the fledgling Swan River Colony twice in October and December 1829 bringing general cargo, livestock, passengers, and colonial produce from Hobart and Mauritius before leaving (January 1830) for Java.

19.01.2022 1959 November - The Kwinana Road Board decides on names for the new roads established in the Kwinana Light Industrial area off Thomas Road. 2020 - Only Mason Road remains.

18.01.2022 1954 The Kwinana Branch of 'Toc H' started the Kwinana Lolly Run. 'Toc H' was Christian movement started in the First World War with a soldiers' rest and recreation centre called Talbot House ('Toc H'), Poperinge, Belgium.

16.01.2022 2020 August The Kwinana Heritage Group lost a dear and respected long-term member in Kevin "Bill" Purdue. His work in the engine shed will not be forgotten. Condolences to Shirley and family.

15.01.2022 Answer to last week's photos.

15.01.2022 1914 & 1917 Naval Base & Railway Siding. Plans for the Naval Base, Cockburn Sound, were drawn up in 1914 and included room for submarine pens. The railway siding (referred to as 'Henderson Naval Base') was built soon afterwards and extended in 1917 with a loop. The siding was used during the First and Second World Wars to load/unload explosives, and other materials, for military use.

15.01.2022 1955 January - The first oil tanker 'British Crusader' arrives at Kwinana Refinery. In later years B.P. commissioned the British artist Montague B Black (1884-1964); famous for his luxury cruise liner posters; to create a diorama to celebrate their operations. The diorama is now held at the Kwinana Museum.

15.01.2022 1923 &1924 Balmanup - The forgotten townsite. Plans were drawn up in 1923 for the town near the Mandurah/Rockingham Road. However, the majority of people living in the area had settled near Mandogalup; the, supposedly, temporary railway camp to assist in extracting timber from the area. By 1924 the planned Balmanup School was thought to be not needed as settler children were already attending Mandogalup School. The town of Balmanup was shelved.

14.01.2022 From Lost Perth: SS Kwinana was an Australian ocean-going cargo and passenger steamship. She was built in England in 1892 as the cargo ship SS Darius. In 1912 she changed owners, was refitted as a cargo and passenger ship and renamed Kwinana. She was damaged in 192021 by a fire in her cargo, and wrecked in 1922 she she drifted ashore about 15 miles (24 km) south of Fremantle, Western Australia. The site of her wreck is now called Kwinana Beach, and her remains are automatic...Continue reading

14.01.2022 1955 August 30th The Medina Cinema Opens. Closed 1959 due to lack of patronage. The Medina Picture Gardens, next door, was opened 26th 1954 but was later discontinued and the Post Office building was erected.

08.01.2022 1920 December - A hundred years ago the area now known as Bertram looked a lot different. The small swamps east of Bulrush (known locally as 'Richardson') Swamp were drained to supply land for the Soldier and Group Settlement Schemes.

(Australian Infantry Force), and settled, post 1921, on a Soldier Settlement lot on the Peel Estate as a dairy farmer. Died 1962 Rockingham/Wellard, W.A. (No photo.)
