25.01.2022 Use moisturiser with urea Moisturisers can help to prevent your feet from feeling dry and act as an emollient to reduce water loss from the skin. Moisturisers with urea in them (like the one Andrew is holding in this photo) have the added benefit of being keratolytic, which means it softens hardened areas of skin and helps the body remove it more easily. We stock Walker’s Urea 25 at our Kilmore and Wallan clinics, so pop in if you’re interested in purchasing it. You will get... best results from frequent application, so put your moisturiser near your toothbrush or next to your bed as a reminder! Think about your footwear Footwear can have an impact on your skins moisture levels. Wearing open shoes in the warmer weather allows moisture to leave the skin more readily, which can leave you feeling dryer and more prone to cracking. If you notice your heels getting drier in the warmer weather, try to balance sandal and thong wear with closed footwear. This can be hard when it gets warm, but your heels will thank you for it. Ditch soap for a pH balanced body wash Soap can leave your skin feeling dry and tight. This is because soap is often outside of the pH balance of the skin which can affect its barrier function. If you’re suffering from constant dryness, try swapping to a pH balanced body wash. This should help to keep your skin feeling hydrated (in combination with the above tips) and maintain your skin barrier function.

08.01.2022 With kids heading back to school after spending some extra time at home it’s a good idea to check the length and width of school shoes Their feet spend a lot of time growing while in school shoes so it’s important to check that they fit correctly. Podiatrist and shoe stores are great for this, but here’s some easy tips you can use at home:... Make sure there's about 1cm of room at the end of the shoe - and remember to check the longest toe (it isn’t always the big one!) Check that the toes can move freely How do they fit at the heel? They shouldn’t be loose but they shouldn’t be too tight either If you’re having trouble with checking the fit, or have any other concerns regarding your child’s lower limbs please don’t hesitate to contact us! Our Podiatrists are trained in the assessment and management of people of all ages, we also stock a great range of children’s shoes at our Wallan clinic.

06.01.2022 As we age there are changes to our skin, bones and nails. We may lose the fatty cushioning on the bottoms of our feet and the skin can become thinner. There may be changes to bony structures such as our toes and conditions such as arthritis may develop. Nails can become thicker and hard to cut. Most of these problems can be managed with regular maintenance of the feet, appropriate footwear and sometimes cushioned insoles can be of benefit. You can manage your feet yourself at... home if you’re able to or ask a family member for help if you have difficulty reaching or seeing your feet. Alternatively you can see a Podiatrist for assistance; we love to help people get the best out of their feet. Taking good care of your feet helps to keep you active and mobile. They have done such a great job carrying you so far, so make sure you look after them! @foothealthau #foothealthweek2020 #FootHealthAus
