23.01.2022 We use our hands to add meaning to our speech everyday Key Word Sign builds on our natural use of gesture, but it goes further. It’s a helpful way for people with speech difficulties to make their communication clearer with specific messages. At the same time, support workers, parents and teachers can use Key Word Sign to be better understood by people who have difficulty understanding verbal communication. The best news? You don’t need any complex equipment to start... doing this you only need your hands! 20.01.2022 This #NAIDOC week, we acknowledge that Indigenous Australian sign languages always were and always will be the first sign languages used on this country’s soil. This incredible book documents the Yolu Sign Language (YSL) spoken by the Yolu people of North East Arnhem Land, in the Northern Territory, Australia. YSL is an alternative sign language, which means that it is used primarily by hearing people as an alternative to speech in certain situations, (although deaf peopl...e in these communities may also use these sign languages). This beautiful language is one of about a dozen Indigenous sign languages left in the world. Before colonisation there were around 500 Indigenous languages in Australia, most with an alternative and distinct sign language closely tied to the local ecology and environment. We hope that there will be a greater sense of appreciation in our community for Australia’s oldest sign languages, and we celebrate that YSL is still being passed from one generation to another in schools in the Northern Territory. Learn more about the project and story here: https://www.yolngusignlanguage.com.au/about https://www.smh.com.au//one-of-the-last-indigenous-languag #alwayswasalwayswillbe #naidocweek #naidoc2020 #naidocweek2020 #aboriginal #torresstraitislander #community #australia #australians

19.01.2022 We’re always keen to support new research that could contribute to reducing barriers for people! Here’s a study that’s in need of participants: Have you had difficulty getting your child or client (aged 0- 18)’s hearing assessed? Has your child been recommended to have a hearing assessment by a professional? If so, we would love to hear from you. We are investigating the things that might make it easier or more difficult to have your child/ client’s hearing assessed, as part... of a PhD project through Central Queensland University. Having even a mild-moderate hearing loss can affect speech, language and literacy outcomes in children, and may go undetected, which can lead to difficulties at school and other areas of life. We are asking parents and speech pathologists to complete a survey (which will take approximately 15 minutes), which asks them to identify ‘barriers’ (things that made it more difficult) and ‘enablers’ (things that made it easier) to have their child/ client’s hearing assessed. By completing the survey, you can go into the draw to win a $100 gift card. There are two separate survey links: For parent survey, click here: https://cqu.syd1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_bvWyo4MrCb2PvGS For Speech Pathologist survey, click here: https://cqu.syd1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_bedZwVcajayqo7A Thank-you to everyone who can take part.
