11.01.2022 This month is Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Awareness Month, and yesterday was Key Word Sign (KWS) Awareness Day!! Its on the 10th of the 1...0th (because of our 10 fingers that are so good to sign with!). This year, Ingrid Howell, a KWS Presenter, has organised a series of activities to promote this day, and raise awareness of benefits of KWS. Ingrid is a speech pathologist who works at Scope Barwon. Before that she had been working in preschools and a school using Auslan with children who are Deaf and hearing impaired in NSW, so signs have been in her system for a long time. After starting working at Scope in 2000, Ingrid wanted to learn more about KWS. She was working with a different population group and knew that KWS was more appropriate than Auslan for hearing children with communication delays and disabilities. She also knew that some signs are produced differently in different parts of Australia and she wanted to make sure she was using the right signs for Victoria. Ingrid learned more about KWS and went on to become trained as a KWS Presenter. She is part of the Victorian KWS committee and wanted to promote KWS to more people. When we asked about her motivation to organise a series of activities to promote KWS Awareness Day in her area, she said: I found that sometimes we just get so busy with our day to day work, and think that we do not have any time to do anything in addition to it. So I just decided that it would be something fun to do, so I put my hand up. What have you planned for KWS Awareness Day this year? I have planned a week of activities through Scope Barwon: I will be running a story reading session with key word sign with the kids at an Early Childhood Centre, and we will be using some signs with kids in play settings handouts and some freebies will be available so that people can read more about KWS, learn some signs and share what they learned with family and friends well have handprints for kids to help them learn signs for colours we will have some of the KWS posters up at the Scope Therapy centre and at Shannon Park, and theres a staff competition on learning signs All great ideas, and wonderful ways to show people the benefits of KWS, and to support them to develop their skill in it!
