23.01.2022 Police are warning the community to be wary of a recent spate of telephone scams. Members of the public have contacted police stating they have received a phone... call from someone claiming the victim has an outstanding tax debt. Often the number displayed on the caller identification is that of a local police station or other government agency, such as the ATO. The scammers reportedly ask for personal information or bank details, and in some examples request the victim purchases online music vouchers or similar products to pay supposed fines. If you receive a phone call requesting personal information or payment from a person representing themselves from a law enforcement or government agency: Do not respond to the request and hang up Call the institution back via a publicly listed phone number If you have lost money as a result of this type of scam, please report the matter to your local police station. You can also report scams to Scamwatch via https://bddy.me/3im2Rzz
23.01.2022 As Victoria starts to return to a greater level of normalcy, let's not forget the community-based organisations like neighbourhood houses who refused to throw i...n the towel during this state's darkest days. We are so proud of the life-impacting contributions neighbourhood houses have made throughout 2020, during bushfires and the global pandemic. We know thousands of Victorians are very grateful to them. Please share and thank our incredible staff and volunteers. 23.01.2022 Day 8: Careers have no gender. Meet Chelsea - a building design drafter at @realm_building_design. Chelsea got into the building design industry because she... was passionate about it. It didn’t matter to her that is was seen as a male dominated job. Her work colleagues, both male and female support and uplift each other to create a safe environment with no gender inequality. 18.01.2022 The Draw a Scientist Test was first conducted in 1983 in order to study when children learn about stereotypes about scientists. In the original study of nearl...y 5,000 kids - only 28 of the girls and no boys drew female scientists. That's about 0.5% of all the drawings. Over the years, this study has been repeated 80+ times with over 20,000 students. Gradually, that percentage got better, but it was mostly driven by girls starting to draw female scientists. Only 1.2% of girls drew scientists as female in the original 1983 study. That rose to 58 percent by 2016. But boys still draw male scientists 9 times out of 10. A follower sent me this picture on Twitter. Their son, Gavin, was asked to draw a scientist. And this is what he drew. (Please note the inclusion of the bump !) This...makes me feel lots of feelings. We hear it so often that it starts to lose meaning - but representation matters. It's incredibly powerful and it changes the way we think. Here's hoping this Draw a Scientist test continues to reveal a more diverse assumption of what a scientist can look like as the years go on.

16.01.2022 Today is International Translation Day and this year’s theme is ‘Finding the words for a world in crisis’. During COVID-19, providing multicultural communities ...with information in their own language has never been more important. It’s essential we make sure our cultural and linguistically diverse (CALD) customers can find and understand up-to-date information about the support we provide. We have information in 25 languages on our COVID-19 support page and our Multicultural Service Officers have shared information with hundreds of CALD community organisations. We also have free interpreting and translating services in over 200 languages. Throughout the pandemic we offered more telephone services, as some face-to-face interpreting became unavailable due to restrictions.
