25.01.2022 Fun flying fox facts from our Education Coordinator Carolyn just in time for National Pollinator Week! Do you know that the flying fox is an important pollinator in the environment? As they feed on nectar from flowering eucalypts, thousands of tiny pollen particles cling to their furry tummies. Moving from tree to tree, they cross-pollinate as they go. ... A flying fox can travel up to 50km a night, helping to keep forest ecosystems and habitats healthy for many native animals and plants. Many eucalyptus species depend almost entirely on pollination by the flying fox. We have grey-headed flying foxes at Kyabram Fauna Park if you want to get up close to these amazing flying mammals that are essential for forest health. Kyabram Fauna Park’s purpose is to provide meaningful and memorable visitor experiences, that educate and inspire action to protect wildlife and its habitat. One of the ways we’re doing this is through our revamped education program that includes excursions to the Park or our qualified teacher coming to YOUR school. You can find out more on our website http://www.kyabramfaunapark.com.au/schools.html or by emailing Carolyn, our Education Coordinator, at [email protected] Felicity Johnson

23.01.2022 Did you know we house one of Australia’s most iconic venomous snake here at the Park? Our newest slithery arrival is a red-bellied black snake from our friends at Taronga Zoo Sydney. You can view this beauty in the main hall of the Education and Environment Centre here at the Park - the perfect way to see this beautiful snake up close but without all the danger!... Red-bellied black snakes love a moist habitat and like to live by streams, swamps and lagoons within forests, woodlands and grasslands. They feed on a variety of animals including fish, tadpoles, frogs, lizards, snakes (including its own species!) and small mammals. Like other animals, they are susceptible to the toxin that cane toads secrete. This is causing red-bellied black snakes to decline in areas with cane toads. Although they are one of Australia’s most well-known species of venomous snake, they’re actually quite a shy species. They will often choose flight over fight and only bite when harassed. If snakes are a little too much, we have our animal encounters running all weekend with some of our fluffier residents koalas, dingoes, and cassowaries. 22.01.2022 What do you know about the birds and the bees?! Well, we know that our White-Browed Woodswallows are the Park’s latest parents-to-be. These birds construct their nests close to the ground with twigs, roots and grasses. You’ll see their nests in tree forks, hollow stumps, and even fence posts. Clutch sizes range from 2 to 3 eggs, which are are incubated for around two weeks. ... Shared parenting is the name of the game with this species with both the male and female alternating sitting on the nest while the other forages for food like insects and nectar. Once the eggs hatch, mum and dad take turns feeding the young who will try their hand (or wings) at flying at around 20 days old! Our White Browed Woodswallows came to us from On The Perch Bird Park and you’ll find them in the Walk-Thru aviary on your next visit.

21.01.2022 Sniff the southern hairy-nosed wombat is having an early night so he can stay up late tomorrow night to ring in the new year! In the wild, wombats dig burrows where they spend most of the day sleeping to conserve energy and water, and then becoming active as the sun starts to set. Wombat burrows are large enough to fit up to ten sleeping wombats at once! In some cases, these burrows can measure up to 30 meters long and several meters deep with multiple entrances. ... If you come across a wombat burrow, the best way to see if it's still being used is the square shaped poop you'll find near the entrances. Wombats are the only animal in the world with square shaped poop! Scientists have mused over how wombats are able to shape their poop this way. Although some thought that perhaps wombats had square anuses to create this shape, it seems that it's the shape of their intestines and the lack of moisture in their diet is the cause. There are three different species of wombats that can only be found in Australia; the northern hairy-nosed wombat, the southern hairy-nosed wombat, and the bare-nosed wombat. Here at Kyabram Fauna Park, we have Sniff the southern hairy-nosed wombat, and two bare-nosed wombats, Noddy and Maggie. If you'd like to meet our native bulldozers, you can find them in our wombat precinct towards the back of the Park. Felicity Johnson

19.01.2022 Celebrate National Science Week while remote learning by doing a biodiversity audit of your backyard! Our Education Coordinator Carolyn has created a Backyard Biodiversity Bundle including a biodiversity audit for your backyard. Youll find it here: http://www.kyabramfaunapark.com.au/images/backyard.pdf Biodiversity is the variety of all living things. When a community of organisms interact with their natural environment, it creates an ecosystem. ... An ecosystem can be large (e.g. forest) or it can be small (e.g. a pond). Even though you might not know it, your own backyard is its own little ecosystem! When we think about animals, we usually think about mammals, birds or reptiles and invertebrates are often overlooked, even though they make up about 85% of all the animals on the planet. Invertebrates are animals that do not have a backbone insects, spiders, butterflies and ants just to name a few. Invertebrates are very important to the environment. Not only do they provide food for many other different animals, they also assist in very important processes like pollination and the recycling of animal and vegetable matter. Invertebrates help keep the environment clean and healthy. Make sure you share your Biodiversity Backyard Project with us by telling us in the comments what youve found in your backyard.

15.01.2022 Check out Echi, our beautiful short-beaked echidna waking up from her winter slumber. Carolyn, our Education Coordinator, has great info about echidnas perfect if youve got a kid who is remote learning right now! Did you know that the echidna is one of the few Australian animals to go into full hibernation during winter? ... So, what is hibernation and why do some animals hibernate? A state of hibernation is when an animal lowers its body temperature and slows its breathing and heart rate. Basically, its a deep sleep that can last for days, weeks or even months. Hibernation is used to conserve energy and to survive when food is scarce. Echidnas will store fat before entering hibernation to help them survive through their winter sleep. Did you know that Kyabram Fauna Park is now offering virtual and online education? Yep, we can help out with remote learning - so let your school know or tell a teacher! You can find out more about virtual and online education by sending an email to [email protected]

15.01.2022 Check out this great snap Keeper Kayla got of our eastern quoll ladies! It’s not very often we’re able to get a great look at this species during the day. Eastern quolls are carnivorous mammals who are roughly the size of a small domestic cat. Their colouring can range from ginger-brown to black with snow white spots covering their bodies, but not their tails. They are nocturnal and like to spend the daylight hours curled up inside logs, underground burrows, or under large ro...cks catching a few z’s before they spend the night hunting for food. This species are fantastic hunters! The majority of their diet consists of smaller insects like roaches, spiders, and grasshoppers. Some of their favourite larger prey includes rabbits, mice, and rats. Their choice in diet has helped keep a natural balance in their ecosystems. Eastern quolls used to inhabit most of south-east Australia. However, the introduction of feral species such as foxes and cats has devastated the population and they are now considered endangered. Currently, this species can only be found in the wild in Tasmania and a few isolated fenced sanctuaries in Australia. If you’d like to meet our special little ladies on your next visit, their home is towards the back of the Park, across from our southern cassowaries.

12.01.2022 Keeper Ben has been busy creating different climbing opportunities for our snakes as part of their regular enrichment. The peg board includes different sized branches to replicate what they would find in the wild, giving the snakes a chance to stretch out and exercise. 12.01.2022 The winter weather is slowly creeping in! Our sugar gliders have the right idea, all snuggled up in their comfy nestbox. How many gliders can you spot in this photo?... This small nocturnal species has membranes spanning from the fifth finger of their front legs to the ankles of their back legs. This membrane allows them to ‘glide’ from tree to tree during the night. Some can glide up to 50m between trees! They are a social species, living in ‘clans’ made up of seven adults and their young in one nest. Between the clan, they are quite playful animals but can be aggressive to any members outside of their clan. The Park currently has two sugar gliders who live on the right side of the Park, near our Bowerbird aviary. Make sure you say ‘hi’ on your next visit! If you don’t get to see them, we will have our ‘Creatures of the Night’ tour happening next school holidays where you can get up close and have a special encounter with our nocturnal animals including our sugar gliders!

09.01.2022 Our ringtail possums, Roger and Maisy, are expecting! How cute is Maisy’s little pouch bump?! Expect to see their offspring in around a month because ringtail possums gestate their young for approximately 20 26 days.... Their litters range from one to three joeys in each litter. When the joeys are born, they are about the size of a jellybean and completely hairless! They crawl up to mum’s pouch where they stay for 7 weeks before hitching a ride on mum or dad’s back until they are 6 months old. We couldn’t be more excited for this little bub to join the Kyabram Fauna Park family. 09.01.2022 Our Education Coordinator Carolyn has great information about cassowaries and why survival of this species is important not only because they are amazing birds but because of their essential role in the environment. The Southern Cassowary is an endangered species and at serious risk of extinction. There may be as few as 4,000 remaining in the wild. Only about 25% of their original habitat remains due to deforestation and development so their numbers may continue to decline.... The conservation of the cassowary is about more than just preserving a unique and beautiful native bird. As a keystone species, its continued survival in the wild is crucial to maintaining biodiversity in the Queensland rainforests. The Southern Cassowary plays a critical role in the dispersal of up to 100 species of plant seeds throughout large areas of rainforest it is a super seed-spreader! The cassowary diet consists mostly of fallen fruit which it swallows whole. Some seeds are so large that no other animal can swallow them. With a short digestive tract, the food travels quite quickly through its system and cassowary scat can contain hundreds of partially digested seeds that it then disperses throughout the rainforest. Its scat also acts as a ready-made fertiliser to give the germinating seeds a helping hand. Research, the development of captive breeding programs and the creation of awareness through education, zoos and fauna parks are all playing a very important role in giving the Southern Cassowary the best chance of long-term survival. Have you met Adelaide and Gorge, Kyabram Fauna Parks Southern Cassowaries? Once we reopen, youll be able to check out these incredible birds that play such an essential part in Queensland rainforests eco-system. Our Education Coordinator Carolyn is a qualified teacher who has developed an education program that aligns to the Victorian curriculum. Once schools reopen to face-to-face learning, perhaps your school could have an excursion to the Park or arrange for us to come to your school? 08.01.2022 Now that summer has well and truly arrived, it’s important to remember our animal friends need help during this warmer weather. At Kyabram Fauna Park, we use misters and ice-blocks to keep our animals cool. As you can see, Adelaide the southern cassowary loves some time under the sprinkler. You can also help wildlife near you home by:... - Leaving out trays of water in shaded areas. Animals can use these to rehydrate or for a cooling bath. Add rocks or logs to deep trays, bowls or buckets so smaller animals don’t get stuck. - Keeping your pets inside. Not only does this help cool your pooch but it alleviates the extra stress of predators while wildlife are in search of water or shade in your yard. - Cover your pools when not in use. Animals suffering from heat stress can get trapped in pools and drown or get sick from ingesting harmful pool chemicals. If you find an animal who is suffering from heat stress, you can: Offer them a dish of water only (no food) Relocate to a cool shaded area using a dry towel or blankets (if safe to do so) Call a wildlife carer immediately. 08.01.2022 Goodbye 2020! We hope to see you in 2021 yes, the Park is open on New Years Day tomorrow! What a year, hey? We thought it would be nice to take a moment to reflect on the good moments of this year: Education Coordinator Carolyn joined the team and she has done a great job relaunching our schools program. Thanks to The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning for funding Carolyn’s position. Many schools have enjoyed our new education program either in the Park, a...n incursion or virtually during lockdown. We welcomed Southern Cassowaries Gorge and Adelaide to Kyabram. They arrived from On The Perch Bird Park during the first lockdown and have been a hit with visitors. We added two species of quolls back in our collection Harold the Spot-Tailed Quoll and Myrcella and Shireen the Eastern Quolls. Countless other species of birds, mammals and reptiles have joined the Fauna Park family in 2020. Our twenty-year masterplan was finalised and sets the sets the park up for a positive future by guiding development of the Park over the next 20 years. You can check it out on our website at http://www.kyabramfaunapark.com.au/images/master.pdf We were fortunate to receive a $1.94 million grant from the Victorian Government to make critical upgrades to infrastructure at the Park that will create an even better experience for visitors and our wildlife. Work has already started with upgrades to the koala enclosure plus the installation of sprinklers and misters in many of the other animal enclosures. Read more about it here: https://bit.ly/3hgxaZx We launched the Zoo Keeper for a Day program so kids could learn what it’s like to work in a wildlife park. We’ve been impressed with the enthusiasm of the children who take part in this program and are thrilled to see so many future wildlife warriors! Night Tours kicked off this year, giving our guests the opportunity to see the Park and our animals from a different perspective. They were hugely popular and will be back after daylight savings. We were excited to be the recipients of $550,000 funding from the Federal Government to help with priority projects in our masterplan. Read more about the announcement here https://bit.ly/38tR9Qx. 05.01.2022 Today is Threatened Species Day and Spot-Tail Quolls, like Harold who lives at Kyabram Fauna Park, are listed as Threatened in Victoria. Spot-Tail Quolls are carnivorous marsupials who make their homes in hollow logs and caves. Their numbers have declined dramatically in the wild and they are considered likely to become endangered in the foreseeable future. ... If youd like to know more about these amazing Australian animals, keep an eye out for Keeper Zoes Fun Fauna Facts video featuring Harold, which well post on our page soon. National Threatened Species Day is held on September 7th every year to commemorate the death of Benjamin, the last known Tasmanian Tiger (thylacine) in a Hobart Zoo. The aim of this day is to prevent further extinctions and restore healthy numbers of threatened species in the wild. The quoll is a direct relative of the Tasmanian Tiger and shares common characteristics. Through education and proactive conservation efforts in the wild, the wildlife community is working to ensure that the quoll does not follow the path of its now extinct relative. 04.01.2022 Huge thanks to Ian and Phil from from the Fauna Park Community Alliance who’ve been hard at work building new weighing platforms for our koalas! The wellbeing and health of our animals is paramount and the new platforms are a non-invasive way to weigh our koalas so our keepers can track their health and wellbeing. The scales fit onto the platform and its up to the koala if they want to move onto the platform with yummy gum leaves proving a yummy incentive! ... Ian and Phil from the Fauna Park Community Alliance have been doing incredible work throughout the Park, often volunteering for more than 15 hours a week to help us with maintenance, gardening, and small construction jobs. To say we’d be lost without Ian and Phil is an understatement!

02.01.2022 Can we remotely help you teach your students? Heres an extract from a video about our wetlands that we created for Kyabram P-12 Colleges Year 10 geography class. Due to coronavirus restrictions, the students were unable to visit the Park for their usual field trip so we brought our wetlands to them digitally!... A longer version of this video was produced specifically to meet the curriculum requirements of the class. It was followed up with our Education Coordinator Carolyn hosting a live question and answer session online with the students. Carolyn is a qualified teacher and creates education session that align to curriculum. We miss having students and teachers visit us at the Park but bringing the Park to kids virtually in their classrooms is a great alternative. They got spoilt today with their very own dingo-friendly Christmas crackers. Like their domestic counterparts, dingoes have an amazing sense of smell! ... We added smelly spices and chicken pieces inside their crackers to give them some extra enrichment while they play. Enrichment is an important focus here at Kyabram Fauna Park. It is key to ensure that our animals can safely display the natural behaviours they would usually exhibit in the wild. The keepers also love to give a fun twist to the enrichment!
