21.01.2022 Unfortunately we are now one less guinea fowl..... I should have known I was tempting fate when I bought 13 keets home. They were out for one day, I heard a commotion, ran over to do a head count and one was missing. All the chickens were not in their runs, instead hiding inside their coops. Obviously we had a visit again from the goshawk. The phrase "watching them like a hawk" definitely rings true around here. Luckily the guinea fowl and chickens are quite happy being housemates.

17.01.2022 This is our beautiful new cockerel Edward. He is a golden cuckoo marans and is in with my black copper marans, Barnevelder and olive egger girls. Thanks Rosie's Roost

10.01.2022 This is a happy ever after story.... Meet Dusty the Dorking. She was my only egg to hatch from a dozen Dorking eggs I had sent down from QLD. So from the beginning she was always my special girl.... We put our chicks outside at 2wks to live in a heated coop and large run. One morning when checking their food and water we saw Dusty on the ground, lifeless and with peck marks to the side of her head. We thought she was gone..... I brought her in and put her under a heat lamp and waited. Her recovery was very slow. We had to spoon feed her. She spent the first 24hrs on her side and a weak chirp would come out every now and then, letting us know she was still alive. Over the next few days her fate seemed uncertain. Her legs were splayed out to the side, she had slipped a tendon. And we asked ourselves do we just put her out of her misery?.... After researching and asking advice online I physically repositioned her tendon and taped her legs. Wanting to give her one last chance at survival. Still her recovery was slow. She moved around on her haunches, not able to stand up onto her feet. We thought maybe a companion would help her spirits, so we brought over a chick I had my eye on and was planning to keep to be her rehabilitation buddy. And guess what!? It worked wonders!! Now her recovery accelerated at full pace. Each day a new improvement. Now 4mths on look at her in all her glory, beautiful dusty

09.01.2022 Most of the girls are starting to lay again after their moult. Really happy with the colours, collecting eggs is so much fun when they lay a rainbow

06.01.2022 A few of the lovely girls getting around the farm at the moment. Can you tell I'm partial to a bearded lady

04.01.2022 This is my little Belgian D'uccle (pronounced Dew Clay) Jessica. She is a little hen, weighing in at just 500g but don't let her small size fool you, she is definitely the loudest in the coop and quite sassy too. She makes the most beautiful babies with Dumbledore the Araucana rooster. They turn out grey like Dumbledore, slightly bigger than Jessica and have the feathered feet and striking pose of their mother. I've kept one of Jessica's daughters as a companion to a disabled Dorking that I hatched (who has made a full recovery! But more about that in another post). And I'll be breeding Jessica's daughter next spring with my Silkie rooster. Can't wait to see what cute little rainbow egg laying fluffballs that pairing will make.

04.01.2022 A group of guinea fowl is called a confusion. Such funny creatures.

04.01.2022 The last incubation for the season. Just popped these babies in yesterday so now there will be chicks for Easter

03.01.2022 The keets are big enough now to go for an explore outside their coop.

03.01.2022 Bringing the young hens up from the growing pens to the house coop getting them ready to go to their new homes.

01.01.2022 This summer we have had to keep our chickens confirmed to their enclosed pens. We had a persistent grey goshawk that would come and make meal out of them a couple of times a week. After my best mother hen was killed and eaten in front of the flock I decided to take away their free ranging and keep them safe. The goshawk continued to visit everyday for months! It must of had a nest nearby and my flock was on its grocery route.... It's been weeks now since we've seen it and ...so I thought I'd let one of the pens free range this afternoon. Gee it made my heart sing to see Dumbledore out with his girls, showing them food and proudly walking around with them. And then of course who appears in the sky!? Yep the goshawk! But luckily a murder of crows showed up to drive it away. So for now it's short supervised outside time and hopefully the crows continue to taunt it.
