25.01.2022 Australorp is an abbreviation for Australian Black Orpington. This breed was developed in Australia in the 1900s from William Cook’s English Orpington. They were imported with the intention of creating a good dual-purpose bird suitable for the Australian climate. They were crossed with Rhode Island Reds to improve the egg laying ability. This breed is an egg laying machine - producing an average of 250 (light brown) eggs per year regardless of weather patterns or seasonal cha...nges. They are docile, hardy birds that come in black, blue and white colour varieties. The feathers of the Black Australorp have a beetle-green sheen that gives the feathers a beautiful shimmer that backyard chicken fanciers love. 23.01.2022 The Malay chicken is one of the oldest breeds from Southeast Asia. They are also the tallest chickens in the world standing at a towering 90cm with a giraffe-like neck and legs, and muscly upright body carriage. Throughout history, they have been exported to the world to create larger, hardy breeds including the Índio Gigante chicken in Brazil and the Brahma in America. In the 1800s very large game chickens were imported to England, where they became fashionable and were selectively bred by English breeders. Interestingly, they were the first chicken breed to be bantamised - a dwarf version of the standard-sized breed was created at the turn of the twentieth century. 21.01.2022 #goodegg EGGS HELP WITH PORTION CONTROL AND ARE TIMELESS At about 70 calories per egg, you know exactly what you are getting. They travel easy, too. Hard boil a couple of eggs, add a salad or a couple of slices of bread or cheese and you have a quick, easy and healthy lunch for you or your children that will keep you all fuller for longer. Throughout history and across cultures, eggs of all birds - domestic and wild - have been an important component of human diets. ... 18.01.2022 The Potchefstroom Koekoek (Cuckoo) is a South African chicken bred as a free-ranging dual-purpose layer-meat bird. They are distinctly black-and-white barred in appearance with day-old chicks being sexable soon after hatching due to feather markings being sex-linked. Females are completely black whilst the males have a white spot on the head. This beautifully patterned bird is a result of crossing black Australorp, white Leghorn and barred Plymouth Rock breeds. Large numbers of dark brown eggs and attractive deep yellow meat, make this bird extremely popular locally in Southern Africa. 09.01.2022 This week is NAIDOC week in Australia. NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins trace back to the 1920s when Aboriginal groups resiliently worked to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC 2020 invites all Australians to embrace the true history of this country a history which dates back thousands of generations. It’s about seeing, heari...ng and learning the First Nations’ 65,000+ year history of this country - which is Australian history. We want all Australians to celebrate that we have the oldest continuing cultures on the planet and to recognise that our sovereignty was never ceded. www.naidoc.org.au An important part of this is an Indigenous voice in parliament and a truth telling process about the history of Australian colonisation enshrined in legislation through the proposed Makarrata Commission. A pathway to this is outlined in the Uluru Statement from The Heart: https://ulurustatement.org/ Kyeema believes that the Uluru Statement from the Heart represents a strong voice stating the desired direction for sincere change, which is an extremely important step in not just recognising but legitimising First Nation People's right to constitutional and structural change by giving lndigenous Australians a voice in the laws and policies that impact them. 05.01.2022 This charming bird was developed in Rhode Island and Massachusetts in the late nineteenth century by cross-breeding Oriental birds with brown Leghorn birds from Italy. It was developed as a dual-purpose breed, to provide both meat and eggs. Since about 1940, it has been selectively bred predominantly for egg-laying qualities, and the modern industrial Rhode Island Red is a layer breed. The State of Rhode Island celebrated the centenary of the breed in 1925 when the Rhode Isla...nd Red Monument was erected on a local farm in the village of Adamsville. These birds are charismatic, adventurous and affectionate backyard chickens. Their lustrous deep red (almost black) plumage and reliable egg-laying ability also makes them a popular household chicken. 03.01.2022 #goodegg EGGS LOWER YOUR ODDS OF HAVING A STROKE There is some evidence to suggest a daily egg might lower your risk of having a stroke. In a recent study, people who had about one egg a day were almost 30% less likely to die from hemorrhagic stroke than those who had none. Curious ‘food for thought’. ... 03.01.2022 The Sebright is one of the oldest British 'true' bantams, developed in the 19th century through a selective breeding program to produce this miniature ornamental breed. They do lay tiny white eggs (only 60-80 on average per year) though chicken fanciers generally keep them as pets. They are angular- looking and lightweight with short backs, proportionately large breasts and pointed wings having an average weight range of 500-600 grams. They are known among backyard chicken fanciers as a sweet and social bird and come in two main colour varieties gold and silver.
