04.01.2022 Self-esteem and self-worth ~ Where does it actually come from? Our level of self-esteem or self-worth which is essentially how we feel about ourselves can often get in the way or stop us from following our dreams or being the best version of ourselves.... Feelings of not good enough and negative self-talk such as I can’t do that can hinder or negatively impact our own personal growth and stop us from blossoming into our full potential. Often clients have commented that they are not sure when these negative thought patterns started or why they feel they are not good enough. This in itself is interesting and begs the question where does lack of self-worth actually come from? Why do we feel like we are not good enough and where do these negative thought patterns and behaviours start? A big part comes from external influences such as social influences. These can be through media, music videos, tv-shows, movies or socially constructed ideas of which we normalise and conform too. It can also come from peers or parents. For most of us it is difficult to pin point exactly when we started to see ourselves as not good enough. This is because we are eroded slowly over time with various messages about who and what we should be and/or look like. Allowing yourself the space to reflect on this is the start of your journey to reconnecting to the fact that you are enough and that everything you bring to yourself and those around you has a purpose. It’s important to remember there is no one else in the world like you, therefore each and every one of us is unique and because of this you matter, you are important, and you bring a quality to life that no one else does.
