19.01.2022 MEDIA RELEASE Date: 9th October 2020 Gumbaynggirr Community welcomes investment into local Aboriginal tourism Bularri Muurlay Nyanggan Aboriginal Corporation (...BMNAC) in partnership with the Coffs Harbour and District Local Aboriginal Land Council (CHD & LALC) is pleased to announce that our application to the NSW Regional Growth Tourism Environment Fund (RGTEF) has been successful. This represents a 5.4 million dollar investment into what has been long - term vision - to expand infrastructure of existing BMNAC tourism experiences in the Orara East State Forest at Sealy and Korora Lookouts and; to pursue the development of cultural eco-tourism accomodation at Coffs Creek. Clark Webb, Executive Officer of BMNAC states ‘this is a positive and exciting time for our community. We have worked incredibly hard to create and build our cultural tourism experiences as successful education and economic development strategies that align with our cultural values and; importantly, will enable us to become self-sustainable as a community organisation and proprietor of the upcoming Gumbaynggirr Giingana Freedom School. Rachael Cavanagh Aboriginal Partnerships, Forestry Corporation NSW stated It’s really exciting to partner with an Aboriginal Corporation in order to support cultural and economic development and play a supporting role The cultural eco-tourism accomodation will complement current Aboriginal tour experiences and Nyanggan Gapi cafe at Sealy Lookout, and will comprise approximately 30 self-contained eco-pods within the bush setting of Coffs Creek. The accommodation will provide training and employment opportunities (approximately 15 new jobs) for local Aboriginal people in the areas of hospitality, tourism, hotel management and visitor experience. Planning is also underway to establish and open the Gumbaynggirr Giingana Freedom School in 2022. The school will become the first Aboriginal bi-lingual primary school in NSW serving as a vital community Gumbaynggirr language and culture revitalisation strategy. It is intended that the financial growth and profits of the cultural eco-tourism accomodation will become the primary source of sponsorship of the Giingana Freedom School. Thereby this investment and the growth of our tourism work will help to create an ever-lasting legacy in our community. Nathan Brennan, Chief Executive Officer, Coffs Harbour and District Local Aboriginal Land Council welcomed the investment as historic, and critical for Coffs Harbour’s transition to a visitor economy. He states that the demand for Aboriginal owned and led tourism experiences are increasing and are an integral part of Australia’s visitor economy. This venture creates the platform for Coffs Harbour to be a leading destination for Aboriginal tourism in NSW. -ENDS- For information, interviews or photo opportunities please contact: Amber Hamer Bularri Muurlay Nyanggan Aboriginal Corporation Email: [email protected] Phone: 02 66525080
