17.01.2022 Thank you to everyone who has recently liked the TimeLimit page, and the recent Man Walk posts. With all the current interest I thought it would be a good time... to let you what we’re about: Our main aim is to create a community of long-lived, mentally and physically healthy people, who are happy and kind to each other. To do that we organise group rucking sessions, man-walks and other group activities to help people connect. My own journey started about two years ago, when I had some major mental health issues, and suddenly realised I had no one to help, and no one I knew (apart from my partner) who wanted to know about it. That age-old stigma about mental health applied, and I guess everyone thought I was best left to my own devices. After lots of ups and downs I discovered rucking, and started doing it once a week with a couple of mates. That has slowly evolved to become weekly sessions that anyone can come to, and two man-walks every week for the fellas. In that time I’ve learned that if you can find just one thing that will get you out of bed every morning, no matter how bad you feel, then even on the worst days, you have a lifeline that will keep you afloat. I still have bad days myself, but they don’t last forever thanks to walking (rucking) everyday. Along the way I’ve met dozens of people, some who have continued rucking, and others who have found other outlets as their safety nets. The most important thing is the connections and knowing that there is always something to come back to, and someone who will listen. That’s TimeLimit, but what exactly is rucking? At its most basic level, rucking is simply filling a backpack (or rucksack) with some weight, and going for a walk. The great thing about rucking is that it’s scalable. You can start with no weight until your body gets used to walking. Then when you’re ready you can add some light weight (5kg to 10kg) to make it harder. Then, as your strength increases you can add more weight, carry extra sandbags, or use your ruck to do resistance exercises for a more difficult workout. Rucking is harder than just walking, but not as stressful on the body as running. So it’s great if you don’t like running, and gyms aren’t your thing. Mind you, I know quite a few people who have started rucking, then worked up the courage to try CrossFit, or martial arts, so it can be a great stepping stone to other activities too. It’s more than just the physical act of walking though. It’s also great for mental health and resilience too. It’s an activity for people to bond though shared experiences, and it’s a place where people can feel safe enough to talk to other people who won’t judge them, or just to enjoy the company of other people. So if you’re not feeling the best, come to one of our weekly walks. If you feel absolutely fine, come to one of our walks too. It might change your life for the better, or you may even be able to help someone else get through a rough patch. You don’t have to load yourself up with a heavy backpack if you don’t want to. Just come along for a walk, a talk, and a laugh or two. A final request - please share the page around and let your friends and family know that there is a place where they can come for a walk, get stuff off their chest, and meet some new people. Everyone is welcome, and there are no judgements.
