24.01.2022 Warnings - What do they mean and what should I do?

24.01.2022 Today the brigade received a very generous donation from a very kind and community-minded young girl who wanted to give back and thank the CFA community for their assistance with the devastating fire season. Kyla, a proud Bendigo resident, made and sold 117 scrunchies which amounted to $200 being donated directly to the local brigade. This was in addition to another $190 which was donated to the wider CFA community. The Brigade would like to thank Kyla and the kind individuals that have donated across this season to enable the brigade to purchase operational equipment which support our firefighters and in-turn the wider community.

08.01.2022 CHECK YOUR HEATERS TO AVOID FIRE RISK As the cooler weather approaches, here are some precautions that you can take to prevent the potential for your heating to cause a fire. To avoid carbon monoxide poisoning and reduce the risk of fire, make sure you have your gas heater serviced by a professional at least every 2 years. Make sure your wood fired heating is free of build-up and obstructions and have you chimney cleaned annually. ALWAYS make sure you turn heaters off b...efore leaving home or going to bed and never leave portable heaters unattended. Interconnected smoke alarms, located in all living and sleeping areas of the home, can save lives in the event of a fire. See more

08.01.2022 |- Winter: the forgotten fire season - a timely reminder to all -| 5 CFA appliances were called to the structure fire on Saturday afternoon from Kyneton, Carlsruhe & Tylden. On arrival, smoke was visible from Donnithorne Street. Incident Controller FF Rohan Taylor said, "the single-storey structure was partly involved on arrival however with quick intervention from the occupants and quick response by the local brigades the fire was confined to the room of origin with very min...imal extension". The incident was listed as under control shortly after the arrival of the first appliance. Crews combed the property for further hotspots with the thermal imaging camera and gas detector following the containment of the fire. Across the state, there were about 15 per cent more preventable house fires last winter compared to the other seasons, with fire services responding to 890 preventable house fires. Captain Josh Gamble said, "Fires can happen any time, but the personal risk is greatest at night when we are asleep when we sleep we can lose our sense of smell. Luckily on this occasion the occupants were home and were alerted to the fire'. Many residential fires result in fatalities or serious injuries start in sleeping and living areas. That’s why it’s critical to have a working smoke alarm in your home. Without a working smoke alarm in all living and sleeping areas of your house, you may not wake if there is a fire., he said. Check your smoke alarm’s battery annually and if your smoke alarm is 10 years or older the whole unit should be changed, ideally to a photo-electric smoke alarm powered by a 10-year lithium battery. When installed and maintained correctly these smoke alarms detect smoke the quickest, alerting you earlier and giving you more time to evacuate to safety, he said. Check out CFA’s complete home fire safety checklist at www.cfa.vic.gov.au/plan-prepare/home-fire-safety-checklist To keep your family safe the CFA recommends you: > Check your smoke alarm monthly. > Make sure you have a home fire escape plan in place and practice it with your whole family. > Your home office should be set up safely. No overloaded power boards or loose cables. > Never leave cooking unattended. > Turn off all appliances, including heaters and electrical blankets, before going to bed. ________________________________________ Photos with thanks to IET Systems - Brian Wilson ________________________________________

07.01.2022 Did you know that the Kyneton Brigade has professionally trained volunteer firefighters that install and service portable fire equipment to relevant Australian standards and building regulations for the public, business, and industry? This provides brigades like ours a means of assisting their communities and raising funds for ancillary and additional operational equipment supporting the whole community overall. Kyneton Fire Brigade have added two new and long-awaited Breat...hing Apparatus sets and an additional four Breathing Apparatus cylinders to the Kyneton Pumper. The purchase of this equipment was made possible through the hard work of the Brigade’s Fire Equipment Maintenance (FEM) Team who provide servicing for fire extinguishers and other first attack equipment to the community and businesses of Kyneton and the Macedon Ranges. This support from the community in choosing Kyneton Fire Brigade to perform this work has enabled the brigade to raise the funds to purchase this valuable equipment. The apparatus and cylinders are vital to the ongoing operations of the Brigade. It provides extra support which can be used in a variety of operational environments such as hazardous materials incidents, structure and vehicle fires both in Kyneton and other surrounding townships. Brigade Captain Josh Gamble said The Kyneton Brigade would like to thank all of the businesses and individuals who have supported us in the past, and who continue to support us, especially during the current COVID climate. People are doing it hard, but as always, the Macedon Ranges community shows resilience and a spirit that is very encouraging in times like this. Kyneton Fire Brigades FEM team, headed up by Firefighter Andrew Twomey, has continued to operate over the past 6 months period, following strict guidelines and ensuring public safety was at the front of mind.
