23.01.2022 Oskana crew eying Launceston to Hobart Crack harbour and ocean racing yacht Oskana may contest this year’s Launceston to Hobart Yacht Race if the young family of owner/skipper Mike Pritchard’s can convince him to enter the 280 nautical mile coastal offshore race. Oskana, a powerful Cookson 50 and arguably Tasmania’s fastest locally-based racing yacht, has been contesting the Combined Clubs Winter Series on the Derwent with Pritchard’s wife Bianca and their children, Oliver,... Oscar, Stella and Sebastien in the crew. We understand that his family are pressuring Mike to do the L2H race so that they can race as a family in a long offshore race, Derwent Sailing Squadron Vice Commodore Nick Connor said yesterday. If Oskana does compete then the race record will definitely be under threat, Vice Commodore Connor said, adding that the race provided opportunity for crew under the age of 18 to participate subject to certain criteria. Pritchard, noted as a prominent Targa driver and a successful ocean racing yachtsman, has told the DSS he is ‘considering’ entering the L2H. The Launie is also very well suited to family crews. last year we had six or seven boats raced by families, including the winning yacht from Victoria, Vertigo. The Notice of Race for the Launceston to Hobart, which starts from Beauty Point on the Tamar River on 27 December, will be issued within a few weeks. Vice Commodore Connor emphasised that this year’s race would be conducted subject to any required restrictions by Tasmanian Health Authorities, adding that as things stand he could see no reason why it would not go ahead. We expect a bumper fleet with Tasmanian yachts that may normally contest the Sydney Hobart potentially seeing the Launceston to Hobart as a challenging alternative should that races not proceed. we already have a lot of interest. Vice Commodore Connor added. Unfortunately, we doubt there will be any Victorian entries this year. The Ocean Racing Club of Victoria have not made a decision on whether the Melbourne to Hobart race will go ahead and the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia will make an announcement on the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race in mid-October. The Sydney to Gold Coast Race start has been rescheduled for 3 October but the COVID-19 cloud may further impact on this event. In Queensland, Hamilton Island and Magnetic Island Race Week regatta have been cancelled for this year, but Airlie Week Race Week got under way yesterday (Friday). 23.01.2022 LAUNCESTON TO HOBART YACHT RACE GET READY! That time of year is around again and many of the sailing die-hards will be starting to think of and giving serious consideration to this year's Christmas and New Years' on-water challenge. For a long-distance yacht race then think Launceston to Hobart Yacht Race.... It's, on average, a two day race, give or take a meal or two and/or an occasional mutiny across the North Eastern coastline of Tasmania, through Banks Strait then southwards down the East Coast though Mercury Passage, around Tasman Island, then Cape Raoul and into the prevailing westerlies to the welcoming beacon of the Iron Pot, then up the Derwent to the Finish off Castray Esplanade. Sounds simple! Think again. Launceston to Hobart Yacht Race campaigners would agree that the description above details the course as the proverbial crow flies. But we also know from experience that the weather gods usually throw in a few taxing hurdles and course deviations along the way: calms, thick fog to westerly gales whilst rounding Tasman Island and frustrating, trophy stealing calms along the way. So its weather gods and Neptune from below, throwing in for good measure a variety of sea conditions that entices sailors back to this iconic race of the Tasmanian sailing calendar. If you are considering entering the race, Covid-19 willing, and have competed in the race before you know the challenges, but you also know the satisfaction of sailing along Tasmania's beautiful coastline along with and against other similarly enthused competitors. Above all, enjoying the challenges. If you have not competed before and want to find out more, please don’t hesitate to contact our helpful staff at the Derwent Sailing Squadron for more information. Also feel free to send us a message via FB Messenger. We will be more than happy to assist. 19.01.2022 Zen Racing CROWNED KING OF THE DERWENT The NSW yacht Zen has been crowned overall winner of this years Harcourts Hobart King of the Derwent. The TP52 owned and ...skippered by Gordon Ketelbey sailed a perfect tactical race to finish 3rd over the line and win IRC on handicap. Zen has recently been acquired by Ketelbey after racing on the TP52 Super Series for many years and has undergone many modifications to make sure it is up to the challenge of offshore racing. Today’s conditions, of a 15-20 knot sea breeze on the River Derwent, saw Phillip Turners yacht Alive Yachting take line honour’s to claim the Derwent Sailing Squadron Inc, City of Hobart Trophy. Purchased at the start of 2014 by Phillip Turner, a Tasmanian businessman, Alive has broken several long-standing race records and filled the trophy cabinet with east coast Australia races before heading to Southeast Asia mid 2016 for the Asian Series. She has now returned and looking forward to east coast Australia racing, after competing in this years Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. Alive finished 2nd on IRC and the TP52 Quest owned by Bob Steel and Craig Neil were 3rd in the results. Greg Prescott’s, modified Farr 40, 2Unlimited won AMS division and was 4th in IRC. Prescott will now be concentrating on tomorrow’s Australian Yachting Championships commencing in Hobart. This years PHS was won by NSW yacht Veteran yacht Katwinchar. Bill Barry-Cotter’s Katwinchar was the oldest boat in 75th Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race fleet at 114 years of age, but also the oldest to have ever competed in the race. Built in 1904 by coopers at the Watney Brewery in London, Katwinchar won the Grand Veterans class. Katwinchar will also be competing in the Australian Yachting Championships. Finally, the results for the Launceston to Hobart, Beauty Point to Low Head and King of the Derwent Series has been taken out by Tim Oldingg and his crew from the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria boat Vertigo. 19.01.2022 DETAIL FIRST DECLARED OVERALL WINNER OF TASPORTS LAUNCESTON TO HOBART YACHT RACE 2020 In a perfect end to 2020, Detail First, skippered by Hobart teacher Scott Broadby, was today declared the overall winner of the TasPorts Launceston to Hobart Yacht Race 2020. The crew of Detail First, still coming to terms with their success, accepted the silverware from Her Excellency Professor the Honourable Kate Warner, AC, Governor of Tasmania, at the official prize giving presentation a...t the Derwent Sailing Squadron today. Detail First needed an entourage of trophy handlers after making an almost clean sweep of all handicap categories winning on IRC, PHS and AMS handicaps overall, and IRC, PHS and AMS handicaps in Division 2. Duncan Hine and Luke Watkins, skipper and navigator of Alive, accepted the trophy for their line honours victory on behalf of owner Phillip Turner, while Mark Bayles, co-owner of Kraken 42s with Andrew Sinclair, accepted the trophy for the ORCi overall winner. The Division 1 winner on IRC was Heatwave Brierley MC, skippered by Matthew Keal while Jazz Player, skippered by John Dryden, won Division 1 on AMS. Dream, the only interstate entry from Victoria, and skippered by Robert Green, took out Division 1 on PHS. The presentations ended a dramatic race which saw two boats dismasted and retirements due to seasickness and rudder damage coupled with some exhilarating and fast racing. The camaraderie among the crews was palpable, as was the relief to be sailing in one of the most watched offshore races for 2020. 17.01.2022 Reliving the DREAM of the 2019 Launceston to Hobart Yacht Race Robert Green’s Pacific 50 yacht Dream provided for some fresh competition in the 2019 Launceston to Hobart Yacht Race. Heralding from the Sandringham Yacht Club, the Iain Murray designed performance cruiser provided some stiff competition for local line honours favourite Fork in the Road Yachting . Dream showed her class early by storming out of the Tamar River to win the converted prize of first to Low Head. Rac...ing between Dream and Fork in the Road was extremely close during the whole race, at times being only 100 metres apart. Dream took the lead for a short time at Cape Raoul in classic match racing conditions. The finish was extremely close with only 10 minutes and 43 seconds between the two boats. We have been saving this video by Dream crew member, Sam Harrington, for a special occasion and what better time to share and remember how great our iconic Launceston to Hobart Yacht Race is to the Tasmanian sailing calendar and the sailing we have to look forward to! 17.01.2022 WELCOME 2020 ENTRANT FLYIN’ SCUD A veteran of offshore racing, Adam Goode will be no stranger to the challenges of the East Coast of Tasmania. Racing his Lyon’s 40, Flyin’ Scud, heralding from Port Huon, Goode will be joined by a mixed crew of Tasmanian and Queensland sailors. Although Goode has only competed in one L2H, he certainly has the off shore credentials with 12 Sydney to Hobart’s under his belt to add experience to the crew dynamic. His crew will include locals, ...Jeremy Ford, Marcus Carter, Robert Knoop, Victoria Logan and Stuart Denholm. The two Queensland crew, Natasha Edwards and Brent Dowton may be looking to keep themselves rugged up as they acclimatise to the cooler sailing conditions, but the distraction of the scenic conditions of the Tasmanian coastline will no doubt be a winner. 14.01.2022 WELCOME 2020 L2H ENTRANT FOOTLOOSE You gotta love the determination of a small boat when they take on the challenge of the Launceston to Hobart Yacht Race. The locally built Young 88, Footloose, just inspires you with what they achieve each year as they return to the race. Stewart Geeves and his crew first entered the race in 2010 and did not waste anytime showing the fleet what they could achieve in an 8.8 metre yacht. When you dive into the history of Footloose you discov...er that this boat is destined to make the finish line, no matter what! In 2010 Geeves had an outstanding performance in his first L2H race. Taking out the overall win Footloose was faced with an early challenge after breaking the tiller in Banks Strait. Quick thinking by the crew had the tiller repaired with gaffer tape for Footloose to continue racing to Hobart for the win. The Footloose crew were at the mercy of the tides and weather gods in 2013 when they spent 8 hours stuck on the hard after the start in the Tamar River. This did not deter Geeves, but when a gale force storm hit the fleet down the East Coast of Tasmania, Footloose was only one of seven boats to finish. With grit, determination and a whole lot of support cheering them on, Footloose arrive in Hobart to a very warm welcome. This will the 11th year for Geeves and his crew racing Footloose in the L2H and as a regular in the results I’m sure they will sail hard and fast to the finish. 12.01.2022 A SAILING MOMENT TO REMEMBER FOR BEN AND DUSTIN The invitation to sail on Alive Yachting was not lost on DSS young member Ben Mason during Thursday night’s Twil...ight. Under the watchful eye of mum, Jane, the opportunity for 10-year-old Ben to take the helm of Alive was a moment he won’t forget anytime soon. Ben’s confidence to helm the 66-foot canting keel Reichel Pugh racing yacht is likely not to dampen his passion for sailing. Young Sabre sailor Dustin Belbin was a recent competitor in the Launceston to Hobart Yacht Race and at just 15 years of age he just can’t get enough of sailing. Sailing his first L2H, on the Young 88 Footloose, he observed the power and speed of Alive on the start line at Beauty Point as the two boats headed out of the Tamar River for two very difference sailing experiences. Dustin didn’t hesitate on Thursday as he transitioned his helming skills from sailing a 29 foot Young 88 to the powerful 66 foot Alive. The smiles of the two boys tells the story of a great night of sailing for both. Well done Ben and Dustin.

08.01.2022 WELCOME 2020 ENTRANT ADVANTEDGE A labour of love and a passion for sailing has seen the Jones family come together to undertake a massive makeover of their Inglis 47, AdvantEdge for this year’s Launceston the Hobart. Andrew and Michelle Jones took a break from racing AdvantEdge 8 years ago to support their son, Josh’s, sailing career and since then the boat has been waiting patiently on a hardstand ready for her return to racing. AdvantEdge raced in the L2H between 2010-201...2 and her last race, before temporary retirement was in the 3 Peaks Race. It has been a race against time to get the boat ready, with Fred Barrett Yacht Design modifications and Salter Marine contributing to the makeover. The Jones family have been working long hours, in a team effort, as they bring AdvantEdge back to her former glory. Last year saw Andrew’s brother Michael Jones competing in the L2H in his boat Ambition, but this year the two brothers will be joined by both their son’s, Sam and Josh, and an experienced crew as AdvantEdge tests her capability in a competitive fleet. I think you will agree AdvantEdge is looking like a hot contender for the L2H. 01.01.2022 WELCOME 2020 L2H ENTRANT PRIMA DONNA It’s a race against time for Royce Salter and his team at Salter Marine to get Prima Donna back in the water and tuned up to race in this year’s L2H. The glass cedar hull of the Hick 35 has had a complete make over from the dark blue hull to Royce Salter signature boat colours and she is looking very slick. ... Salter will be joined by his partner Heather McCallum, son Julian and a few other well-known locals, David Calvert, David Short and Tom Stearnes, along with Darren Williams from NSW. Prima Donna last raced in the L2H in 2010, but this year Salter and his crew are expected to be very tactical as they take on the competitive fleet. When a sailor in any competition in Australia takes themselves too seriously, they are politely told Come on mate we’re not racing for sheep stations. Salter will certainly be taking this year’s race seriously, but not without a good sense of humour and some friendly banter between the competition. 01.01.2022 WELCOME 2020 L2H ENTRANT - DETAIL FIRST Looks like the competition is heating up for our Farr designed entrants. Detail First, formally known as Hot Prospect, will be our 3rd Farr 1104 entrant for this years race. Scott Broadby and his crew will have some competition with other Farr 1104 entrants, Justin Barr's Rumbeat and Bryan Walpole's Invincible, joining them in the race. Scott and his crew are regulars in the Combined Clubs Series and rarely miss a Bellerive Yacht Club... Wednesday night twilight race. I'm sure they will be looking forward to another great L2H race. Who can remember that magnificent picture taken last year by Detail First crew member, Callum, off Tasman Island, what a ripper of a picture! Lets hope the race provides another picture perfect opportunity and fantastic sailing conditions as they race down the East Coast to Hobart.
