25.01.2022 #Passivhaus solutions for Australia

25.01.2022 The insulation for our #Passivehouse project with Titanium Homes in Toowoomba is going in today. Devin and his team from Brisbane Insulation are doing an awesome job. We are using Knauf Blow-in Insulation maximizing consistency and minimizing the possibility of thermal bridges

25.01.2022 It's official! 16 Sorrento is a certified Passive House. Last night Mayor Paul Antonio unveiled the plaque, watched by some incredible people - David Crisafulli MP, David Janetzki MP, Sam O'Connor MP, Cr Tim McMahon - TRC, Megan O'Hara Sullivan. We are so proud of this project! Big thanks to Titanium Homes for their wonderful work.

24.01.2022 Our project with Titanium Homes is almost complete with the painters wrapping up t hi s week. We’re back on site with for the Final blower door test in a couple weeks. #Passivehouse it just makes sense

23.01.2022 Virtual prototyping is really important. The attached image shows the modelling of floor slab junction with an outwards opening door threshold. The upper image is the original junction with a temperature ratio of significantly less than required for Canberra which would have the potential for moisture and the formation of condensation. Further modelling trialing different scenarios resulted in the addition of a simple EPDM seal. The temperature ratio is then raised above the required threshold for Canberra. Sometimes it is not just a case of putting a really good window with a good foundation to achieve a successful outcome, the real hero might be a $10 strip from any hardware store. #Passivehouse #Passivhaus

23.01.2022 Nathan and the team are doing a great job

23.01.2022 Question of the month - July Is it possible to get an slab edge detail that has a 75mm inspection gap for termite management to have an Frsi above 0.55 with a tile floor. Absolutely. It takes a bit of thought and understanding of the heat flux lines but it is possible.... We were able to achieve 0.63 which is more than acceptable for a warm climate set.

22.01.2022 Here’s Enrico describing the heat recovery ventilation system that will provide fresh filtered air to your home.

19.01.2022 Well the building fabric is almost complete for our Toowoomba Passive House that we’re building with Titanium Homes. The plasterers are in on Friday so you won’t see any of this but you will be able to feel how quiet it is inside. #Passivhaus #Passivehouse

19.01.2022 This is a great way to get into a Passive house at lower cost.

18.01.2022 An absolute pleasure to host David Janetzki MP at our Passive House pilot project in Toowoomba. It's great to be able to demonstrate the benefits of Passive House built affordably by a great local build team Titanium Homes. Not only will you be able to heat it with a hairdryer but the new residents will be able to breathe fresh filtered air once winter clears and the blossoms arrive in spring.#Passivehouse #Passivhaus

18.01.2022 We are absolutely flying on this project together with Titanium Homes. Nathan Peters has an eye for detail which played a massive part in achieving an air-tightness test in construction result of 0.13 ACH. According to John and John from ATTSA it was the best result they have seen.

18.01.2022 We're back on board on FB. Well it certainly has been a while since we've posted to Facebook. We've been busy building our office and working on quite a few #PassiveHouse projects. Importantly all our designs are completed with PHPP modelling as well as thermal modelling of key junctions. We've attached an extract of the thermal modelling we've just completed for a #hempcrete house in Lismore. Whilst the U values aren't stellar they are certainly appropriate for the Lismore climate and there are no thermal bridges.

18.01.2022 Our self funded Pilot Project Passive House project broke ground in Toowoomba today. Our builder Titanium Homes - Nathan Peters has been absolutely invaluable in bring this project from paper to reality.

18.01.2022 We just finished the Memto wrap today. Great job Titanium Homes

17.01.2022 For those of you feeling a little frustrated with your ‘work from home’ arrangements especially while trying to home-school children, great things can grow from these feelings. Here is our talewe built our Passive House Design and Building Science business from a desk located in our open plan kitchen/dining/lounge area. It was fine at first but then baby number 2 came along and after ‘playing’ outside at 6pm on a cold October evening with 2 young kids because a client Skype ...meeting was going overtime, I’d had enough. We needed a solution fast. Overheads of renting office space weren’t an option and thus our shipping container office was conceived. With our knowledge of Passive House, we knew we couldn’t build a standard performing office you can’t unlearn things! By December we had an ugly shipping container in our back yard. Now it is a super comfortable, functional and inspiring place to work. Thank goodness for those difficult times, otherwise we’d still be having client meetings at our dining table and existing on an unhealthy work/life balance. Now from a chance meeting in the surf, we are producing a replica of our office in Portugalonce we can fly there of course. Can’t wait to see all the inspiring things created from this unusual time. 16.01.2022 MVHR 101 by Enrico Passivhaus it just makes sense #Passivhaus #passivehouse #indoorairquality

16.01.2022 Virtual prototyping is really important for optimising the envelope as well as reviewing the structural engineering to determine whether changes are required. Whilst in cooler climates this junction is not suitable in a warm climate it can be accepted. #Passivhaus in warm climates.

16.01.2022 One of our latest designs that is going to be built on the Woolgoolga Headland by Solitary Designer Homes. The design was inspired by the original surf club in Woopi. It's quite fitting that the new surf club also being built by Solitary Designer Homes

15.01.2022 We put the first layer of wrap on the house today for our pilot Passive House project in Toowoomba. The frames for the first floor will be up next week

15.01.2022 Not all double glazed units are the same. A lot of people are taking the opportunity to upgrade the windows either in their current home or specifier them in their new home which is awesome, but before making that purchase consider that there is a considerable difference between standard and better double glazing. The two images show the same window frame on a cold winters night in Sydney (5.5 degrees), however, the image on the right shows a standard double glazed unit (incl...uding argon) with an aluminium spacer which unfortunately will still provide an environment for mould growth. A slight premium will improve the double glazing as well as the spacer between the glass panes removing the environment for mould formation if the Room humidity is below 50%. #buildingscience #thermalbridging #energy #energyperformance #doubleglazing #construction #passivehouse #mould #mold

15.01.2022 Here is a link to some VR images of a house we've designed and modelling Ballarat. It has the potential to be Passive House Low Energy Building. Can't wait to see it built

14.01.2022 Madonna Stewart and I have been taking the time to listen to a bunch more podcasts at the moment. One of our favourites is by Timbo Reid and his Small Business Big Marketing podcast which has G.O.L.D. dripping from every episode. Here's an example of how just one idea helped us. After both spending our early working life flying in the air force we decided to move to the Woolgoolga on the mid north coast to live our dream. With no air force base on the coast we changed tack.... We now run a Passive House Design and Building Science company, LAB Design. What’s that you might ask? We design homes that you can heat with a hair dryer and have air inside as clean as an operating theatre. I developed that part of my pitch after listening to your #425 Podcast which included the capstone pitch, which has a long form and a Richard Stubbs lead with your best material short version. The importance of having a great pitch came about whilst in Portugal on a family trip of 5 months in Europe last year (Think Will and Bear but with two kids). I was surfing near Peniche when I started talking with a local in the surf who asked me what we did so I gave him the Stubbsy short version. Waves always take priority over conversation so if the surf is good then there isn’t much time for the long version. Long story short we are now working with him designing the accommodation component of an entire turn-key off-grid solution with his company that has designed an autonomous food growing system. The prototype has commenced in Portugal. Hopefully after the travel bans have lifted I will be able to go and assist with the prototype which I know will be the first of many that will pop-up around the world. Thanks Timbo

14.01.2022 Our Passive House Pilot Project that we completed with Titanium Homes in Toowoomba has just been certified Passive House Plus. Next Step - Open day Oh and grass. #Passivehouse #Passivhaus #IAQ #Toowoomba

12.01.2022 We just received this photo from one of our clients with an image of a rendering that we did during the planning phase of a country style multi-gen house and then a subsequent photo of the finished house. They are stoked with their home. Great work by Build by the Sea.

12.01.2022 The second storey of the our #Toowoomba #Passivhaus will be commencing in the next couple of days. Then we wrap it up ready for the first air tightness test

12.01.2022 Don’t rely on rules of thumb. Question of the Month June With just a standard 90mm frame, battens with air gap and cladding, isn't there a lot of thermal bridging?... The answer to the above involves modelling the wall with thermal bridge analysis software, which will enable an optimized building envelope for the location of the constructed wall. Rules of thumb are useful as a starting point for the real solution. Rules of thumb should never be the built solution. Short answer there is some thermal bridging but it is insignificant in a warm climate zone. Long answer It is important to consider the climate within which the wall structure is being constructed. Whilst pine has a thermal conductivity nearly 4 times the value of the surrounding insulation the effect within the wall should be modelled to determine the possibility of moisture or condensation and the effect on the wall of a repeating structural element. The net result of the studs and pine in a wall increases the overall thermal conductivity of the insulation. In real terms a wall with a R2.5 HD Batt has the same overall R-value of an R2.0 Batt which can then be modelled in PHPP. The local effect of the studs themselves is a surface temperature of 16.86 degrees with an outside air temperature of 0 degrees OAT. This gives a temperature ratio (FRsi) of 0.843 which is significantly higher than prescribed by the Passive House institute value of 0.55 for a warm climate zone.

10.01.2022 We’re planning a walkthrough day with builder and designer onsite to answer questions about Passive House and why it just makes sense for building in Toowoomba #Passivhaus #Passivehouse #toowoombaregion #toowoombaliving #toowoomba

10.01.2022 Here is the story which shows how air quality can drop literally within a few hours. In a Passivhaus the air inside is fresh and filtered Passivhaus...it just makes sense #Passivhaus #indoorairquality

10.01.2022 Here's a closer look at our container office from the outside and an overall from the inside set up in office mode

08.01.2022 Certainly humbled to part of a global list of Passive House stories this week. As things move forward we really believe that people will put their health and comfort first when they consider their home or workplace. #Passivehouse #Passivhaus

06.01.2022 We’ve partnered with Titanium Homes for the pilot project of our LAB Design Wall System for our #Toowoomba #Passivehouse. The progress is awesome

05.01.2022 We're going global. Our container office is about to be duplicated in Portugal

04.01.2022 Dust and poor air quality have been really prevalent across SE QLD today and particularly on the Darling Downs. Our Passive House in Toowoomba which is almost complete has fresh filtered air through medical grade filters to the inside making it a very pleasant place to live. A bonus is that less dust equals less cleaning. Passive House it just makes sense #Passivhaus #passivehouse #indoorairquality

04.01.2022 Passivhaus blower door test complete for our Kearneys Spring pilot project we’re building with Titanium Homes. 0.11ACH #Passivhaus #Passivehouse

02.01.2022 Last week we pre-taped the roof membrane for our #Toowoomba #Passivhaus and fixed to the top of the roof truss. A little more wind than anticipated but the process worked a treat. We're always really impressed with the adaptability of our builder Nathan and his team from Titanium Homes for their first Passive House

01.01.2022 Our house at 16 Sorrento was on the local news! It's the first "Plus Level" certification Passive House to be on the market in Australia and we are so proud of the work Nathan and his team at Titanium Homes put in to make it such a beautiful home. Watch this space to see the pics from last night's unveiling of the Certified Passive House and all the incredible people that enjoyed the night!

01.01.2022 Thanks very much FKG Group for the generous loan of the Eziquip shed in Toowoomba today to pretape the proclima roof membrane for our #Passivhaus project
