25.01.2022 Thanks Language and Learning for the tip on this event!

24.01.2022 We might take a bit longer but we get there in the end.........

23.01.2022 I found this in the gutter outside my place today. A flash card with ‘was’ on it. ‘Was’ is wrongly treated in many schools as a ‘sight word’ that needs to be le...arned by visual memory. There are a few things wrong with this. Firstly, ‘was’ is a regular word when you know what sounds ‘wa’ normally make in English (/w/ /o/ like in ‘want’, ‘wasp’, ‘wash’ abs ‘swamp’) and that the letter ‘s’ makes the /z/ sound on the ends of words. Where this is taught to kids in a good phonics based program, ‘was’ no longer needs to be thought of as an irregular word. Secondly, the brain pays no attention to the visual features of words once it LeArNS To cONNecT sOUndS tO LEtteRS. The brain pays attetnion to evrey lettre and every soudn they make. (See my point! If your brain wasn’t sensitive to the correct sound order, you’d have not easily noticed those deliberate misspellings.). If visual shape of words was important, this mIxED cASe of the lETTeRing wOulD BE cAuSinG you (a proficient reader) a lot of trOuBLE AND FIXED UPPER CASE WOULD ALSO MAKE READING MUCH SLOWER. But it doesn’t really slow you down too much once you become used to it does it! Your brain is not processing word shape. It’s processing letters and sounds. Mixed case experiments over many decades have proven this! I hope this in the gutter outside my place is an omen!
