24.01.2022 We are delighted to announce Flemming Hansen’s appointment as Chief Operating Officer of Labourforce Group. Congratulations Flemming! There are very few people in the Supply Chain Labour Hire industry with the depth and breadth of experience to match Flemming’s. And fewer still who have served one company faithfully for over 20 years.... He’s achieved this in an industry that’s known for high staff turnover through his consistently long term view, and his drive to grow the business through building deep, enduring client relationships. Starting out in Import/Export Fleming left Denmark at 22 to move to Australia, half expecting most of the locals to look like Crocodile Dundee. His Danish accent, overlaid with a slight Scottish burr from working closely with a Scottish sales manager when he arrived in Australia 30 years ago, had to be adjusted a little back then but you’d never pick it now. Flemming is a seasoned leader with a solid grasp of international logistics. He oversees Labourforce’s operations throughout Australia and New Zealand, travelling roughly 100 days each year. We look forward to the next 20 successful years. #Labourforce #FlemmingHansen #SupplyChain

19.01.2022 What’s the cost of hiring and training a new permanent employee? Some estimates put this between 30-50% of the annual wage. That’s a lot of money and a worthwhile investment if the new hire is going to contribute to your business for a couple of years. But what if you need to find temporary staff to handle seasonal or unexpected surges in workload? Most businesses can’t afford the time and training cost to find them, hire them and get them up to speed.... That’s just one of the arguments for outsourcing your recruitment process to an experienced labour hire firm. There are some other good arguments too: Outsourcing converts a fixed labour cost to a variable cost, that you only incur when you need extra staff. The outsource provider can access talent you may not be able to reach, creating a larger pool of qualified prospective hires. A good labour hire firm will conduct rigorous assessments, background checks and relevant medical tests for you, reducing a major workload that would otherwise fall to your HR team. Industry-focused labour providers can source qualified, experienced staff so you don’t have to just hope that your job ads find the right people. What other benefits can you see? #Labourforce #Outsourcing #LabourHire

16.01.2022 Beef, barley, lobsters and wine. Australian commodities are being impacted by trade tensions with China. If these goods aren’t moving off ships or out of ports overseas how will this be felt back in Australia? As commercial leaders figure out whether and how to switch to alternative markets, Supply Chain and Logistics managers are going to have to be on their toes. Established route plans and schedules will have to adjust. Import/Export admin teams will have to deal with a wi...der range of customs jurisdictions and bottlenecks in distribution centres will need to be addressed. And then of course if the tensions get resolved or eased in the next few months the volumes moving to China will pick up again very quickly putting pressure on warehousing, transport and bulk shipping. The flow-on effect of this volatility means that staffing complements will have to be very flexible and scale up or down quickly and with short lead times. It’s unlikely that most logistics businesses will be able to respond adequately with their existing permanent workforce. Getting quick access to experienced, reliable temporary staff across the whole logistics operation is going to be crucial. How flexible is your workforce plan? #Labourforce #China #tradetensions

14.01.2022 Delivery drivers jobs are going to change significantly over the next 3 to 5 years. Some will adapt while others will need to find a new line of work. Automated vehicles are here to stay and all sorts of large and small vehicles will be ever more familiar sights on our streets and in our skies. Some drivers will be keen to reskill and qualify as drone pilots. Others will be challenged with a much more dramatic shift. There will still be some situations needing a person to acc...ompany a vehicle even if not driving it and hand over the product. Online retailers have already seen the opportunity in this. There’s a huge opportunity for upselling by offering a customer something in addition to what they’ve just purchased. So the ‘driver’ is in a perfect position to have a sales conversation. The tech will take care of the order processing and most of the physical aspects of delivery. The vehicle can carry additional stock that will allow the ‘driver’ to close an upsell on the spot and take a contactless payment. The increased ROI on that delivery will be easy to measure. So in the near future we’ll be looking for tech savvy drivers with sales skills! How soon can you see this happening? #Labourforce #drivers #salesskills

11.01.2022 We’ve all seen the youtube clips of piles of crates crashing down and spilling milk or liquor all over a warehouse floor or a forklift tipping over so that the driver has to make a hasty exit. Forklifts are a major contributor to workplace injuries, some of them fatal, and pedestrians and operators are both vulnerable. Here’s a quick high level safety checklist, based on recommendations from WorkSafe Victoria:... - Suitable for all operating surfaces both indoors and outdoors - Suitable vehicle for the task - size, type, fuel, accessories, seatbelts - Operating area separated from walkways with barriers in place - Clear lines of sight - no physical obstacles - Suitable signs and mirrors installed at blindspots - Sufficient lighting - Only trained, licensed operators or trainees under direct supervision - Readable load charts - Warning lights and horns working - Pre-operation checklists available and in use Of course there’s much more to safe forklift operations than just this list. Workplace design, work allocation and shift scheduling, clear safety procedures and training are all equally important as well. How safe is your warehouse? #Labourforce #Safety #Forklifts

05.01.2022 There is a lot of talk about gig work at the moment and how some Australians are being exposed to poor working conditions. What most people don't know is that ...there is a huge difference between labour hire and gig work, and it is important for people to know the difference so they can make informed decisions. RCSA has prepared a simple fact sheet that breaks down the facts and highlights the key difference between the two forms of work. We encourage you to use this document as part of your conversations and to keep dialogue based on facts. 04.01.2022 The Transport Logistics & Supply Chain employment market grew a very impressive 6.1% in September. SA/NT leads the way. http://www.labourforce.com.au/news/

04.01.2022 When you send a driver out you want them back in one piece. Insurance industry research reported that 53 Australian truck drivers died in heavy vehicle accidents in 2019. In 34% of the deaths fatigue was a significant factor. Operating a heavy rig is a huge responsibility for drivers and the companies that employ them and managing fatigue behind the wheel can be a real challenge. Long distances, demanding delivery schedules and sitting alone for hours in the cab of a 62 ton v...ehicle, and the behaviour of other road users can all take their toll. It takes quite a distance to bring a beast like that to a stop in an emergency so sharp eyes and quick reaction times are needed. Not so easy if you’ve been on the road all night. So when transport managers call on labour hire firms to provide drivers it’s important that every candidate is up to the physical demands of the job. Medical assessments, drug & alcohol tests and rigorous selection processes all serve to give a transport operator the peace of mind that the drivers are able to handle their rig and their cargo safely. How can we make the roads safer for truckies? #Labourforce #safety #truckies
