20.01.2022 Your employer can still refuse your request to make your position permanent, but theyd need to have reasonable grounds - such as not seeing your job being available in the next 12 months or if it would require a significant adjustment to your hours of work. http://www.abc.net.au//casual-workers-win-right-t/10326014

19.01.2022 Happy Holidays from Labour Pains Legal! Thank you to all clients, past and present, for their support. Please enjoy the Christmas and New Year period, be safe, and see you all in 2018!

19.01.2022 We are acting for a working mum demoted and injured in her employment after taking a period of parental leave today. Upon her return to work, our client was marginalised and excluded from higher level duties and responsibilities. Her parental leave replacement was promoted to become her manager and she is now required to report to this person.

19.01.2022 If youve been made redundant or dismissed during parental leave (or immediately after), you might be interested in reading our recent article on the subject. Please feel free to share and distribute! https://www.facebook.com/alison.j.dutton//10153510009911891

17.01.2022 Parental leave isnt just a womens issue. In some countries where men receive paid parental leave it has been found that, when men are forced by the state to stay home with their children, they soon learn to value the role of the primary carer and housekeeper. http://www.smh.com.au//female-workforce-participation-key-

16.01.2022 Very proud of my wonderful and talented friend, Naomi Fryer. You are an inspiration to women everywhere and Im so pleased and proud we made it through law school together! Xx http://the16percenters.com//women-need-to-change-the-way-/

16.01.2022 "Time is power. Time is a feminist issue". "As we walked and talked, we came to see that, despite our best intentions to be equal partners, we had no role models. The minute we got home with our brand new baby, it was like these unconscious, old 1950s-era black and white movies started playing in both our heads that the Ideal Father goes off to work and provides, and the Ideal Mother is always available for her kids and keeps the house neat and tidy. Those old movies, time ...diary data shows, are still playing all over the world. Women are still doing twice and three times the housework and child care, in many instances, even when they work full time." "Its time for new movies." http://www.dailylife.com.au//brigid-schulte-why-time-is-a-

16.01.2022 "I think what were talking about is also no different than how women are conditioned to perform femininity in the first place: To put a lot of invisible work into something but make it look effortless. This old dress, that five-minute makeup, that spotless house and those marvelously well-behaved children? I did it in no time and still made it to hot yoga. Its ridiculous to think this expectation of women to be everything, and poised and charming to boot, would magically disappear at the office." http://jezebel.com/women-at-work-were-doing-all-the-office-

16.01.2022 Yikes, that's a lot of labour pains! Wishing these women all the best with their pregnancies

10.01.2022 Flexibility in the workplace needs to be the rule rather than the exception that it is now, in order to boost gender parity, and close the pay gap. http://www.bain.com//articles/the-power-of-flexibility.aspx

10.01.2022 Labour Pains Legal is pleased and proud to have been a part of ACAs special report on working women last night alongside Elizabeth Broderick, Sex Discrimination Commission and the fabulous Jane Carro. View here: http://aca.ninemsn.com.au/article/9005537/working-women

09.01.2022 "The assumption is women with children arent devoted to work. This is a self-reinforcing stereotype. Managers erroneously believe mothers arent ambitious, so they dont give mothers promotions or opportunities for advancement. As a result, fewer women get top roles. Since fewer women wind up in top roles, people start believing it must be because they lack ambition. Its a vicious cycle." http://www.huffingtonpost.com.au//no-woman-should-be-asked

06.01.2022 We were told we could not close the doors, even to go on a toilet break. We always have to ask someone from one of our sister stores to relieve us for that five or ten minutes we need to go to the bathroom. They cant always come in time because they are busy as well," one said. "Ive been stuck, sometimes Im busy and busting and holding it for two or three hours. Ive heard of one lady who had to use a mop bucket." This is barbaric and unlawful. If you know someone who has to deal with these working conditions, tell them to give Labour Pains Legal a telephone call to discuss! Disgraceful.

06.01.2022 Under the new clause, employers will be obliged to "discuss the request with the employee and genuinely try to reach agreement on a change in working arrangements that will reasonably accommodate the employees circumstances", before responding. A step in the right direction. https://www.theage.com.au//employers-forced-to-give-detail

05.01.2022 "That fear of being ostracised at work is being blamed for a rise in stress-related illness, premature death and suicide. According to official data, about 200 people die every year from heart attacks, strokes and other karoshi events brought on by punishing work schedules." http://www.theguardian.com//japan-long-hours-work-culture-

05.01.2022 Its mental health week so heres some good advice from our friends at Beyond Blue. We all need to take care of our own mental health as well as the health of our colleagues, coworkers and friends. Sometimes all it takes is listening and a friendly chat.

05.01.2022 Beyond Blue have launched a new initiative appealing to the mental health of blue collar and FIFO workers. Davo, the larrikin tradie, is intended to start the conversation about depression and anxiety in the workplace and provide information to employees as to where they can go to seek help. Check it out here: http://www.theage.com.au//meet-davo-the-face-of-beyondblue

02.01.2022 "Rather than ethical standards improving when women are on boards, it may be that organisations with a corporate social responsibility focus create a climate of gender equality. This may mean their boards include more women simply because corporate social responsibility and equality are related concepts."
