20.01.2022 Recovering from an eating disorder is so incredibly hard, especially when the Eating Disorder has been a lifesaving strategy to help cope with overwhelming feel...ings, pain or even trauma. At some point, however, the eating disorder no longer becomes a survival mechanism, but another problem as well. Yes, it's helped avoid all the pain/thoughts/feelings, but it's caused it's own suffering that eventually becomes too out of control, or has too many side effects for either you or your friends/family to be able to bear. It can be difficult though, because when the Eating disorder has been such a useful coping strategy, how do you suddenly cope if it's taken away? In many ways, I think this is why recovery is so slow, and why people have such an ambivalence towards recovery - there is a love/hate relationship with the eating disorder. They both need it, and despise it. Lindo Bacon (in a podcast I will post) discusses this beautifully - and she suggests that "crowding out" the eating disorder with things that start to give you pleasure, or make you feel good, can be a much more effective way to look at recovery. It's not that the eating disorder is being "taken away", but it's no longer relevant, because you start to find things in your life that make you feel happy, fulfilled, healthy, vital, energetic - and the eating disorder is "crowded out" because these other things become more important to you. But this also requires us to see that looking after ourselves, that nourishment, that self-care, are fundamental needs we need to give ourselves. Recently I completed both Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Beginners and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Trauma (so I am now officially ACT trained!), and a significant aspect of this is focusing on the life we want to create, and how do we make it meaningful - despite the emotions that will inevitably come our way. When it comes to Nutrition, how do we commit to our values (of health, self care, fitness - or whatever they maybe?) despite what life throws our way. This really requires us to be able to recognise what we need, and provide for ourselves - with self-compassion.
