25.01.2022 If you have something cooking on the stove, always keep watch. When a pot of oil or deep fryer catches fire, people reactively put water on it. Don't put water on an oil fire no matter how minimal you believe the oil may be. #LachlanBrigade #YourBrigade undertook training last night for newer members on fire extinguishers and fire blankets. This is what a water poured onto an oil fire looks like in slow motion. Imagine this fire in your kitchen. Always have working smoke alarms but also consider a fire blanket and extinguishers.

25.01.2022 It’s time to get moving on your hazard reduction and fire plans. Drop in to see #LachlanBrigade #YourBrigade on any Tuesday night after 7.00pm or drop us a message via Facebook. #LachlanRATS #ProudtobeaRAT #TFSVolunteers #OurCommunity #OurValley

25.01.2022 Yesterday #LachlanRATS came together to welcome another honorary RAT into the fold. #LachlanBrigade #YourBrigade took time to thank our local member in Craig Farrell MLC for assisting us in accessing the recent News Corp grant. We are grateful Craig’s assistance as he has always been a strong RAT supporter. It was nice to thank him in this manner and welcome him as an Honorary RAT. In addition to the highly sought after RAT shirts, a plaque was presented for Craig to hang i...n his office as President of Tasmania’s Legislative Council. #OurValley #OurCommunity #TFSVolunteers

24.01.2022 A notice from Derwent Valley Council in relation to Jeffrey's Track link to the Huon Valley. This connection has been discussed many times over the years so here's another opportunity for engagement with #OurCommunity. #LachlanBrigade #YourBrigade #OurPeople #LachlanRATS #ProudtobeaRAT #OurValley

24.01.2022 It's going to rain out there. Time to be careful on the roads. Nothing is worth the rush - drive to the conditions Remember if it's flooded, forget it - here's a video from Queensland Fire and Emergency Services.... Keep #OurValley safe over the next few days. Don't take chances. You can't control nature. #LachlanRATS #ProudtobeaRAT #TFSVolunteers #ourcommunities #LachlanBrigade #YourBrigade #ourpeople https://www.youtube.com/watch

22.01.2022 While today’s fire at Molesworth wasn’t an issue for #OurValley it was a strong effort from local brigades including Molesworth Brigade and Collinsvale Fire Brigade - Tasmania with aerial support. Second Officer Adrian captured these images from New Norfolk. #LachlanBrigade #YourBrigade #LachlanRATS #TFSVolunteers #OurPeople #TasFire

22.01.2022 You may see movement around #LachlanBrigade #YourBrigade today and tomorrow as #LachlanRATS work to access a fire on an unnamed trail off White Timber in #OurValley. As typical this time of year, there's still dry fuel to burn but the ground is very muddy which limits access. A bulldozer is in the area to assist this morning so please take care when driving on Valley roads. Other Brigades from Collinsvale and Mount Nelson assisted as well as our District staff noting the warmer weather during this week. #ProudtobeaRAT #TFSVolunteers #ourpeople #ourvolunteers #ourcommunity

21.01.2022 On Tuesday night the Annual General Meeting for #LachlanRATS was held. It was a bitter-sweet meeting as it was the last official engagement of Dallas Baker who, with his wonderful wife Shirley, are moving north ....... way north...... to be with their family and grandchildren. Grandad or GD (as Dallas is affectionately known) will be sadly missed. He joined in 2004 and was Second Officer for 7 yrs and Group Officer for 5 yrs. It was his dedicated service and that of #LachlanB...rigade #YourBrigade ancient David Gleeson which prompted the Officers to award both Life Membership of the Lachlan Fire Brigade. Both have been strong mentors for the Brigade as it has evolved over the past decades. These are the first Life Memberships of the Brigade and well deserved. Their names will grace an Honour Board which is underway and we will have the plaques inscribed. For Dave as a foundation member in 1983, this award reflects his journey with the Brigade including 19 years as Brigade Chief - although on one certificate Dave was listed as 1901! We will miss Granddad and Shirley but wish them a safe journey north (stay on the left side of the road GD and have regular rest stops) and seek they prepare for a RAT invasion one day. And we still have Dave........... #ProudtobeaRAT #OurValley #OurPeople #TFSVolunteers #TFS #TasFire #OurCommunities

19.01.2022 #LachlanBrigade #YourBrigade want to give a shout-out for our Ambulance Tasmania counterparts at New Norfolk as they celebrate five decades of service. Today marks 50 years since the New Norfolk Ambulance Station was officially opened. As part of its 50th anniversary, the station group made up of five branch station officers and 24 volunteers has put together a time capsule to be mounted on a wall within the station. ... The time capsule includes a signed shirt, copies of local newspapers, patches, photos and various pieces of gear. It will be reopened in 20 years. #LachlanRATS congratulate all those who have served over the decades and those who still serve today. We hear that despite many years of service they aren’t going to put Bryce into the time capsule!!!!! #ProudtobeaRAT #TFSVolunteers #OurValley #OurCommunity

19.01.2022 There won't be a dust storm today in #OurValley (well we hope not)- however, there will be just about everything else Mother Nature can throw at us. 15.01.2022 As Tasmania will see a Severe Weather Warning for Damaging Winds state-wide over Sunday 30 August, it's perhaps time to think of the classic song "Riders on the Storm" by The Doors. #LachlanBrigade #YourBrigade doesn't want anyone riding out the storm tomorrow. Follow advice and watch out for falling trees in #OurValley - be safe. Weather Situation:... Strong northwesterly winds develop across Tasmania during Sunday as a cold front approaches from the west. The gusty front crosses the state early Sunday evening, with strong southwesterly winds to follow. DAMAGING NORTHWESTERLY WINDS, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with gusts around 100 km/h, are possible across Tasmania during Sunday. The damaging winds are expected to develop around midday on Sunday, then contract to northwest Tasmania during Sunday evening as the winds shift southwesterly. Gusts in excess of 100 km/h are likely about elevated terrain, and possible along isolated parts of the east coast. Note that soils across much of eastern Tasmania are saturated. This may result in an increased likelihood of trees falling over in high winds. Locations which may be affected include Devonport, Burnie, Launceston, St Helens, Swansea, Strahan, New Norfolk and Hobart. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lS-af9Q-zvQ #LachlanRATS #ProudtobeaRAT #TFSVolunteers #OurPeople #ourcommunity

15.01.2022 The great crooner, Frank Sinatra, once sang a spoke about the fickle summer wind. However #OurValley and most of our State won't experience a summer wind. #OurCommunities will experience severe weather over the next 24 hrs. Severe Weather Warning for DAMAGING WINDS... For people in Western, Upper Derwent Valley, South East, North East, East Coast, Central Plateau, Midlands and parts of North West Coast and Central North Forecast Districts. Weather Situation: A vigorous cold front will arrive at the west coast of Tasmania this evening, and cross the state during Wednesday morning. A blustery westerly airflow will follow, and persist over the state until Wednesday evening. DAMAGING NORTHWESTERLY WINDS, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts in excess of 100 km/h are possible about the west coast late this evening, extending across the warning area overnight. Winds shift WESTERLY during Wednesday morning and persist through the afternoon. Winds are expected to ease below the warning threshold Wednesday evening, although it will remain gusty about the far south and the far northeast into Thursday. Locations which may be affected include Scottsdale, St Helens, Swansea, Bicheno, Orford, Strahan, Queenstown, New Norfolk, Bothwell, Hobart, Geeveston and Dover. #LachlanRATS #LachlanBrigade #YourBrigade #TFSVolunteers #ProudtobeaRAT #TasFireService

15.01.2022 Today #LachlanBrigade #YourBrigade responded to a vegetation fire in #OurValley. The steep slope required relay pumping from a dam to our light tanker and up the hill to our medium tanker. The strong winds were also problematic with at least one tree falling while crews were engaged. Other trees remain a risk due to their age and lots of hollows in the trunks.... A stop call was issued after an hour on this fire. A good effort all round from early call to the fire and the response of two experienced crews. Thanks to Firefighters Alex and Victor for these images of #LachlanRATS in action on the steep slopes of Lower Swamp Road. While permits are no longer required for hazard reduction burns please firstly consider weather conditions and secondly register your burn on 1800 000 699. #ProudtobeaRAT #TFSVolunteers #OurCommunity #OurPeople #tasfireservice

15.01.2022 Recently #LachlanBrigade #YourBrigade gave a hand to assist a member who has been unwell. With cooler weather approaching (well at some stage) the #LachlanRATS got together for a wood hooking exercise. Here Fire Fighter Les does his David Foster show under supervision of Brigade elder Dave. Note Fire Fighter Grant is a safe distance away! 13.01.2022 Bushfire mitigation was the topic of discussion with John Tucker (MP) during his visit to #LachlanBrigade #YourBrigade recently. He was shown the terrain and vegetation risk to the major population centres from the Lachlan and surrounding areas.... John told the Brigade about the success of the ongoing Fuel Reduction Burns with the program now in the sixth year. On the back of the past fire season, he explained about investment in aerial fire fighting with Tasmania having access to 11 aircraft to be prepositioned in strategic locations across the state, consisting of seven helicopters and four fixed-wing bombers and swooping aircraft. Aerial support is vital in containing any blaze in the Lachlan. This is in addition to setting up two bases for Large Air Tanker support - one in north and one in the south. John acknowledged the work undertaken by the Brigade in community education and engagement. "Bushfire preparation is everyone's responsibility," he said. "It is critical that we continue to work with and educate the community on what they can do to manage bushfire risk." "I also encourage members of the community to connect with the Tasmanian Fire Service Community Fire Safety Programs and understand plans for their local area" "Link in with your local Brigade and understand how to mitigate your bushfire risk. I thank the Lachlan Rats for the work they do in this great community, noting the risk to the larger population centres on the other side of Wellington Park. #ProudtobeaRAT #OurPeople #TFSVolunteers #OurVolunteers #OurCommunities #TasFire

13.01.2022 #LachlanRATS wants to share with #OurValley Edition 21 of the Bushfire-Ready Neighbourhoods program newsletter. In the past #LachlanBrigade #YourBrigade have participated in the Bushfire Ready Neighbourhood workshops to make our community fire ready. Even though Autumn arrives on Monday, there may still be warm days ahead into April and Bureau of Meteorology predications of a drier than usual autumn and winter. And as those wood heaters fire up again for the cooler months,... home fire awareness is paramount. #ProudtobeaRAT #TFSVolunteers #OurVolunteers #OurCommunities #OurPeople #TasFire

12.01.2022 It's that time of year again....... yes nearly Christmas but also time to remember that fire permits are going to be required. From Dec 04 (at the time of 2.00am) permits are required for any hazard reduction burns in #OurValley. While the crews from #LachlanBrigade #YourBrigade enjoy meeting our community, attending an unregistered burn isn't one way of preferred engagement. Please register your burns and follow the guidelines in ensuring there is adequate boundaries cleared... around the fire and fire fighting equipment to tackle any potential escape. Find out more at fire.tas.gov.au #LachlanRATS #ProudtobeaRAT #OurCommunity #TFSVolunteers #TasFire

12.01.2022 What can we say? The #LachlanRATS are truly humbled for being one of a number of national recipients in the national News-Limited grant round. Earlier this year #LachlanBrigade was greatly appreciative of amazing support by our local community through a concert as well as a fund-raising event at Sandown Village Nursing Home in Sandy Bay. The announcement late yesterday of funding to assist with improvement of the station was truly humbling.... The thanks of the Brigade go to: Tasmania Fire Service - the Chief Chris, Acting Southern Regional Chief Dale and our hardworking District Officer in Pete. Craig Farrell - Local Member who assisted #YourBrigade in the process. The Mercury Newspaper - who are Tassie's paper and representative of News Ltd. Brigade members who worked on the grant process. TFS acting south regional chief Dale Rayner told The Mercury the station would assist in community safety during bushfire season. Any fire that comes towards the northern suburbs of Hobart from the Derwent Valley poses a risk to that area if they become large and out of control, he said. Lachlan Brigade play a very valuable role in that respect as they are able to respond to fires in their local community, keeping them small and out of the rugged terrain at the back of the Wellington Ranges. And let's thank Bill, Victor and Dave for being our models for The Mercury shoot. #ProudtobeaRAT #YourBrigade #OurValley #OurCommunity #OurPeople #TFSVolunteers

11.01.2022 No one or nothing is ever so important as to pick up your phone while driving. One moment of distraction can cause a life-time of regret and pain. 11.01.2022 Total Fire Ban - Check your bushfire plan now. 11.01.2022 In February 1967, 110 fires were burning across Southern Tasmania from Hamilton in the Derwent Valley to the Channel. In five hours 500,000 acres were impacted and now 64 people died. The fires came within two kilometres of central Hobart, killing 20 people and destroying 432 houses in the metropolitan area. Like Canberra in 2003, no one believed in 1967 that bushfires could penetrate the urban areas and come into the city. ... Four members of #LachlanBrigade #YourBrigade lived through these fires. Brigade elder Dave lay on a road in the Lachlan as the fire raged around him. Fourth officer Pete saw the fire tearing through Glenorchy as his father saw a man being burnt. Fire Fighter Les was at Wayatinah as the fire came through with Hydro teams working hard to cut fire-breaks to save the town. Fire Fighter Phil watched as his family farm was destroyed at Kingston with the apple sheds going up in flames. Strong memories of a devastating day. Add into this the experiences of our crews at other major fires, including NSW and QLD last fire season, the #LachlanRATS are keen to ensure everyone in #OurValley has a fire plan and works to make sure their property is fire ready. #TFSVolunteers #OurPeople #OurCommunity #ProudtobeaRAT #TasFire

09.01.2022 It’s been a hard day up on White Timber for the crews from #LachlanBrigade #YourBrigade and our mates from Collinsvale Fire Brigade - Tasmania and Mount Nelson Fire Brigade A small fire which took many hours to reach using a bulldozer. But working in steep country is what #LachlanRATS do - and Collinsvale Brigade protects part of Hobart’s backside too. Mount Nelson protects the bush boundary to Hobart as well from the south. ... 08.01.2022 We often hear a lot of confusing messages over weather patterns particularly heading into summer, noting the very visible variations in climate from year to year. Lately there's been much discussion about the La Nina weather patterns. La Nina (Spanish for Little Girl) is when the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean is much cooler than normal. So what does this mean for #OurValley #OurRegion or #tasmania? ... Here is an article from #YourABC which explains why summer may be warmer but wetter than average. 07.01.2022 To all across #OurValley, you may be reading on social media about some fire brigades not running their annual Santa lolly run this year. Well #LachlanBrigade #YourBrigade is going ahead with Santa's visit at a date to be set soon. Due to #COVID19 there will be set meeting points and we promise we will sanitise Santa very well. Stay tuned to learn about how the #LachlanRATS will bring Santa to #OurValley just before Christmas with our Covid plan.... #TFSVolunteers #ourvolunteers #ourpeople #ProudtobeaRAT

07.01.2022 Billy Joel once sang we didn’t start the fire. But #LachlanBrigade #YourBrigade did as part of our early hazard reduction. Yes as spring gets underway everyone needs to start clearing hazards. Last night #LachlanRATS #ProudtobeaRAT started a hazard reduction burn. More burns are planned! 05.01.2022 #LachlanBrigade #YourBrigade are always seeking new members in #OurValley While the Brigade trains on Tuesday nights, which doesn't suit some members, Second Officer Adrian now supervises regular training on nominated Sundays. 05.01.2022 Who remembers the great era of disco? A style of dance music that arose in the mid-1970s, disco is characterized by hypnotic rhythm, repetitive lyrics, and electronically produced sounds. Disco has nothing to do with #LachlanBrigade but for this disco track of "Burn Baby Burn", we wish to advise there will be fire and smoke in the vicinity of the station this evening.... Training is around use of fire extinguishers and fire blankets for our current crew and large number of new members. So you will see smoke and you may see fire. But for those who want to jive on this winter's night - get your groove on and boogie on down to this track. And #LachlanRATS reckon some of #OurCommunity still have their flairs somewhere. #YourBrigade #TFSVolunteers #OurValley #ProudtobeaRAT #OurVolunteers #DiscoNeverDied https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LH-QwK4v0ZI
