03.01.2022 A short history of Noarlunga, where the first lacrosse match in South Australia was played back in 1885!

03.01.2022 Before the First World War, a significant number of South Australian lacrosse players also served in the South African War (1899-1902). Among them was Herbert Ernest Goodes, of the Jamestown Lacrosse Club, who was the first South Australian lacrosse player known to have been killed in battle. He served with the Imperial Bushmen from his arrival in June 1900 until 23 May 1901 when he was killed in action at Bethel.... A memorial to Trooper Goodes was erected in 1903 on the corner of Irvine and Ayr Streets in Jamestown where it remains to this day. Lest We Forget. https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/207949223

03.01.2022 The Adelaide Deaf Adult Lacrosse Club was formed in 1901 by Mr J W Davis, who previously plied his trade with the defunct East Adelaide Lacrosse Club. The club experienced premiership success on several occasions, including the Junior Association B Grade (equivalent to today's Div 2) in 1905, Junior Association A Grade (equivalent to Div 1) in 1907, and B Grade (equivalent to Div 1) premierships in 1923 and 1927, and spent a number of years in the SALA A Grade competition as ...well. The club continued entering teams in the SALA competition after the Second World War. Deaf community lacrosse clubs had also existed in the Victorian, West Australian and New South Wales competitions, and one of the photos attached shows the 1920 SA team who were visited by their Victorian counterparts. The Victorian Adult Deaf lacrosse team were a strong club who won the Victorian A Grade premiership in 1916 and were runners up the following year. A video of their team in action against Coburg in the late 1920s can be found on YouTube here: https://youtu.be/1KDaFqURqMA Do you remember the Deaf Adult lacrosse team, either as a player/opponent or spectator? Please comment below! Many thanks to Deaf Community & Sports South Australia who loaned these photos for scanning into our collection!
