18.01.2022 Too much milk? Baby is pulling off constantly? Feed for only a few minutes and then wants to feed again in an hour? Coughing? Not happy? What is Block Feeding? Block feeding involves restricting baby to one breast for 3-hour or longer blocks of time before giving the other breast. It is very effective at bringing down milk production when a mother is making way too much milk. Allowing the breasts to stay full for a set period of time sends the signal to slow milk production.... Happy Friday!

13.01.2022 Restricted tongue movement caused by tongue tie may affect the shape of a babys palate, leading to a high palate or a bubble palate with a high spot. These may be a factor in broken suction, a clicking sound and pain during breastfeeding. A baby with an unusual palate may also resist a deeper latch due to gagging.

12.01.2022 Tongue-tie occurs when the thin membrane under the babys tongue (called the lingual frenulum) restricts the movement of the tongue. ... Tongue-tie occurs in 10% of newborns and is more common in males. Some babies cant breastfeed efficiently when a Tongue Tie is present. Get in touch if you suspect that your baby has one

09.01.2022 I started my lactation journey with my first son. I started breastfeeding him and everything seemed normal in the first few days. When st home I started to have a few questions since things didnt seem right. He was nursing for 2 hours or more and not even falling asleep after. I had to rock him every time to put him down, but never followed the eat-sleep pattern. He wasnt losing weight but he wasnt putting on either. I was feeding him all day and my nipples were cracked a...nd I couldnt stand the pain. The midwifes recommended me a nipple shield which made my pain go away but my supply too. The Early Childhood nurses alarmed me about my sons not putting on weight and told me I must top him up. I tried pumping but my nipples got worse since I couldnt get much milk and I had to do it for a very long time.I had to do introduce formula at the end. Since the bottles were introduced he refused the breast completely. It was a fight every time I was trying to breastfeed him. I decided to seek help from an IBCLC but she could only see me in a week time because she was on holidays. I waited too long and my supply was decreasing. He wasnt breastfeeding and I was pumping day and night to get 50ml. When the IBCLC came she recommended motilium (to increase my supply), pumping and supply line breastfeeding. I tried that for a week or two but my nipples got worse due to pumping and also my little one continued to refuse the breast. I ended up with a nipple infection and needing antibiotics and here my breastfeeding journey ended. From my experience I realised how important is to get breastfeeding help from the very begging and how this can be crucial for mums to have a beautiful and pleasant experience. After my maternity leave break I went back to one of my jobs where they were starting a Tongue Tie clinic. I had the opportunity to assist and learn form our in house Lactation Consultant. She was highly experienced and she thought me about of breastfeeding issues that mums and bub could experience. I couldnt have had a better mentor to persuade my career as an IBCLC and I am very pleased now for being able to help all mums out there having a difficult time. Happy Friday mummas :)

09.01.2022 Antenatal Expression of Colostrum Mothers start to produce colostrum (early milk) while pregnant. Learning to express colostrum during pregnancy is a useful skill for all mothers. There are also benefits to saving expressed colostrum if your baby is likely to need special care after birth. In the early days, its important that your baby receives only your milk. If the unexpected happens and you and your baby are separated, or if your baby has feeding difficulties or health p...roblems, you will find it easier to express your milk for your baby if you have practised beforehand. Why express while pregnant? -Youll understand how far your babys mouth needs to be on the breast when he latches on -Youll be able to express a small amount of colostrum if your baby needs encouragement to feed. -Youll be able to express colostrum for your baby if he has difficulty feeding or is cared for in the neonatal intensive care or special care baby unit. -Youll find it easier to recognise changes in your breasts. -Being able to hand express will help you avoid problems with engorgement and mastitis. *If you are given the go-ahead it is recommended you begin close to your babys due date, no earlier than 36 weeks.

07.01.2022 Cluster feeding is one of the main reasons mums give up breastfeeding. Commonly mistaken with the fact that mum is not making enough milk for the baby. 07.01.2022 Treatment and home remedies for clogged milk ducts: -Apply a heating pad or warm cloth for 20 minutes at a time. Allowing hot water to flow onto the breasts in the shower can also be beneficial. -Soak the breasts in warm Epsom salt baths for 1020 minutes. -Change breastfeeding positions so that the babys chin or nose points toward the clogged duct, making it easier to loosen the milk and drain the duct. -Breastfeed the baby on all fours, or in any other position that places... the baby under the breasts. Gravity can help drain the breasts and remove the clog. -Massage the clog, beginning just above it and pushing down and out toward the nipple. Avoid pinching or trying to "pop" the clog. See more
