25.01.2022 It’s fabulous weather here in Bemm River today so we took Jade for a drive to Pearl Point. We have had some big storms over the last few months so rock formations have appeared that we have never seen before. There’s always something different to see and always a few pretty shells or driftwood to collect.
23.01.2022 Lacuna Cottage - Our seaside styled cabin has been decorated with quirky nautical memorabilia. The property is located in a secluded part of town and the cabin is set in landscaped gardens with plenty of privacy. Lacuna Cottage is separate from the main house, ensuring you have peace and quiet (although we can't guarantee the birds won't wake you). Most things are provided such as linen, towels, cutlery, crockery, coffee, tea, and lots of little extras. You can also pick your... own herbs and seasonal vegetables from the garden. The cabin has one queen size bed in the main area as well as a single bed in a separate area. All the breakfast essentials are provided, bacon and eggs and fresh bread for you to prepare at your leisure. You can relax with a cuppa in the shade of the gum trees or wander through the flower garden. The pond offers a space for birds to play and maybe there will be a Wallaby jumping around. If you would like to book a stay then send me a message with your preferred dates. And while you are here check out Pauls collection of Land Rovers. Hope to see you soon, Karen & Paul Bemm River Far East Gippsland
22.01.2022 Corellas on our deck the other day
22.01.2022 Our figs are ripening nicely this week. And a photo from down at the pond today. This summer we have had an amazing amount of growth in the garden.
22.01.2022 Over the weekend we took some of our guests around Bemm to see some of the places we love. Firstly we went up to Mt Bemm, from there you can see the whole of the township and lakes. The weather was perfect and luckily there was no wind. From there we drove out to Pearl Point and Py-Yoot Beach. As usual there was no one around and the weather was beautiful.
21.01.2022 Our Dahlias are growing beautifully at the moment. I just hope they are as good next weekend for the Orbost Show.
20.01.2022 This is a top video of 50s Gippsland . Im still not sure why this guy thinks his luckiest break so far was to meet Joe southern . Have you liked and shared this yet ?
20.01.2022 For a change of scenery we often go up to Glen Arte for a drive which is not too far from here. Its great on a hot day as its much cooler there. The Mountain Ash trees are huge and the tree ferns are lush and green. The old loggers hut is being restored by a group of men who only use traditional woodworking skills to restore huts in the Victorian high country. Some of the massive tree stumps have notches cut by the woodsmen to fell the trees, back in the early days when there were no chainsaws. This is one of my favourite areas and a great for a bit of photography.
20.01.2022 There has been a lot of clearing all around Bemm River lately including the bush along our back fence. The farmer is doing this for bush fire prevention as well as creating more grazing land for his cattle. He has also cleared a path so that we can easily walk to the river from our back gate. It has opened the whole area up and looks great.
20.01.2022 The gardens are looking great after the recent rain and after 18 months the pond finally has some water in it.
18.01.2022 Huge rains here in Bemm over the weekend. The River is higher than weve seen for the last ten years. Our pond is full for the first time in many years as well.
17.01.2022 This week a work colleague from Sydney came to visit us and he brought a drone with him to get some photos of our place. These photos give a good overview of our place and where we are situated in the town. The third photo shows the track running from our back gate through the bush to the river. The farmer who owns the land cleared the track for us and Paul is slowly clearing it, with some help from the farmers cattle, to make it easier to walk through.
17.01.2022 The Espalier Project - the top timbers are now on the posts so that we can hang netting over to protect the fruit. We have ordered exclusion netting which should be bird proof. We are really happy that we have some blossom as we didnt expect any this year after lifting all the trees and replanting into the new positions. Paul is really happy with the progress.
17.01.2022 Some photos of the top garden at the moment. Plenty of flowers out and the roses are better than ever.
17.01.2022 Some photos from a little garden walk this morning. Plenty of flowers and plenty of rain for the pond. The new espalier orchard is covered now as the fruit has set and we need to keep the parrots away. The trees have settled in very well with a good crop of fruit which we didn’t expect after re locating all the trees. Paul has finished his car restorations and is now building a three bay carport for them. It is an extension to the firewood structure, so now all of his toys are undercover including boats, camper trailer, log splitter and lawnmowers. One of these days all the projects will be done, maybe.
16.01.2022 A great way to spend Christmas Day.
16.01.2022 Introducing Storm. 1964 Series IIA 109 hard top. The collection is now complete! There are two before photos as well.
15.01.2022 Just a few photos from the end of Autumn. The Silver Birch down the driveway put on a great show of golden leaves and the Espalier Orchard is now complete. We dug most of our fruit trees up and replanted them onto a trellis system. It is much easier to managed the trees and mowing is a breeze. We have settled in for winter now but still have some beautiful still sunny days which are great for gardening. Paul has almost finished restoring his Land Rover ute so in the next week or so Ill be posting photos to announce Opal to you all.
14.01.2022 The garden is looking good at the moment. Dahlias and roses are still flowering well. Weve had no rain for ages but thankfully the tanks are full. Sunny days and cool nights and we are already lighting the fireplace each night, we have plenty of firewood for the cabin as well.
13.01.2022 This afternoon we had a break from work and went for a drive to the top of Mt Bemm. Conditions were very clear and the Inlet was easy to see. On the way home we stopped at Elephant Rock for a photo with all the moss growing on his head. Another beautiful day in the Bemm River area.
12.01.2022 Its that time of the year again. Need to top up our wood pile. Recent clearing has left plenty of fallen timber for the town to collect. Great weather for a tan as well.
11.01.2022 Bemm River is looking beautiful at the moment with the local Wattle in flower all along the river bank. These photos were taken from the bridge.
11.01.2022 Huge rains here in Bemm over the weekend. The River is higher than we’ve seen for the last ten years. Our pond is full for the first time in many years as well.
10.01.2022 The fires are over and we are finally back to normal. The rains have arrived and the garden is looking fabulous so I went for a walk today to take some updated photos for you to see whats in flower at the moment. In a few days time the Orbost Show will be on and hopefully some of these flowers will still be out and Ill have a few entries. We havent had enough rain to keep the pond full, maybe over winter things will get back to normal. And the old corrugated iron dunny - we found it at the tip!
09.01.2022 We are so lucky to have this rare and endangered Green and Golden Bell Frog in our garden. We have seen them this week in the pond and also in the vegetable garden. I knew we were living in paradise!
08.01.2022 Yesterday we took a drive out to Py-Yoot Beach to escape the heat. The tide was very low and we could walk out quite a way in the crystal clear water. The rock pools have lots of fascinating sea life to photograph as well. The lake is very high at the moment and is flooding across Pearl Point Road between town and first beach. Once the lake is opened all this will drain away.
06.01.2022 Finally we have had some decent rain to break the drought. With it came huge winds from down Tasmania way. There was not enough rain to fill up the pond but hopefully that will happen over the coming months. All this rain will help our newly planted trees and put some colour back into the very dry parched lawn. Its a great time to visit, and enjoy quiet times with the log fire burning, a cuppa or a wine and a few good movies to watch.
06.01.2022 There are bush fires today at Cape Conran about 20 kilometers west of Bemm River. Winds are high and the smoke is starting to come this way. We were out and about so we drove to the lookout at Pearl Point for a better view. We keep in contact with the CFA via an emergency app so we always know whats happening around the area. We also stopped at Py-Yoot Beach at a very low tide to see some beautiful colours of the water, seaweed and smoke from the bush fires.
06.01.2022 After two years of work Paul has saved another Land Rover from the scrap heap. Opal was born in 1971 and was adopted from a family in Sydney, who were out of their depth with her needs. Here is a before photo and Opal 99.9% completed, just waiting for new seats. Next step is a road worthy inspection then historic club registration. Opal is welcomed by her sisters, Pearl, Ruby and Jade.
05.01.2022 It was a great day for a drive here in East Gippsland today. After the January fires and good rain over winter we have a bumper crop of Xanthorrhoea australis and its little cousin Xanthorrhoea minor in bloom like we have never seen before. Our vehicle shows how tall they are. In some places there are acres of spikes as far as you can see. Other flowers that I have not seen in the area before (maybe I need to get out of the car more often) were Butterfly Flag, Common Fringe Lily and the Rush Lily. October in Cape Conran Coastal Park East Gippsland is the place to be Please excuse the amount of photos, we just love these plants!
05.01.2022 A walk around the garden today to see the what's flowering this Spring. The Waratahs are in flower and the pond is full as we have had plenty of rain this week. The "frog music' is constant day and night. We wish you could all visit us but as we have strict Covid regulations in Victoria, only regionals Victorians are allowed to travel. Maybe by the end of the year we will all be able to travel a bit more and have a normal Xmas.
04.01.2022 Today we went to a beautiful area near Bemm called Dock Inlet. Its about a 3 klm walk along the track (closed to vehicles) from Pearl Point Road. This is a fresh water lake with a camping area as well. So quiet and no tourists because of the walk. Absolutely beautiful on a winters day.
04.01.2022 Today the entrance from the ocean into Sydenham Inlet is being opened. We have had plenty of rain over the last week which has raised the level of lake, consequently flooding the low lying roads and the carpark. This happens every six months or so and by opening the entrance the lake becomes tidal again which should be great for fishing. Even the pond in our garden is filling up for the first time after two years of very low rainfall. The photos show the car park, fishing platforms, the boat ramp, playground, the river looking from the bridge and the road out to the beaches.
04.01.2022 After all the rain over the weekend the pond is full and the paddock behind our fence has water everywhere. Here is a short video of all the frogs enjoying the conditions. This goes on night and day and we are loving it all.
04.01.2022 During the landscaping of the area around the pond we had a load of rocks delivered from a nearby quarry. In some of the rocks there are fossils of little ferns. Next time you come to visit have a look at them, they are under the grape vine arch.
04.01.2022 Bemm River has only had about 50mm of rain in the last few days but up in the mountains there has been huge rainfalls. Consequently the River and Inlet in Bemm has risen to flooding levels. The River is flowing quickly and because the entrance at the ocean has closed up again, the lake is overflowing into the carpark and onto roads around town. Update : Just after these photos were taken the Entrance opened up on its own so these levels are starting to go down again.
03.01.2022 Our fruit and vegetables are growing very well at the moment in the garden. I have lots of bottling to do and Ill make some nice chutneys for the cabin as well. The pumpkin vines are taking off into the farm behind the cabin with enough pumpkins to get us through the year ahead.
03.01.2022 Paul and I were out driving this week on some of the tracks around Bemm. The Boronia is in full flower at the moment. Heres a photo of one of the best bushes we saw down the Hekarewe Track towards Pearl Point.
03.01.2022 Here is a fabulous photo taken by a guest this week at Cape Conran boat ramp. What a beautiful photo, thank you Sian and Paul.
02.01.2022 This is the flower spike of a Gymea Lily that we planted about four years ago. It spike has been growing for six months and finally has opened up completely. We planted a few of these to remind us of the gardens around our old home in Quakers Hill where they flower constantly. The parrots love them and so do we.
01.01.2022 After 18 months of work Paul has finally finished the restoration of Jade. Jade is a 1966 Series 2A Land Rover. Over Easter they will be attending the 70th Anniversary get together of Land Rover at Cooma NSW.
01.01.2022 Paul went out this week for some early morning fishing. The entrance is closed at the moment so the lake is quite high. This is the best time of the day!
01.01.2022 Now that Paul has finished restoring his three Land Rovers he decided it was time for another carport for them. And it's already done! It is a pale green colour and hardly noticeable from the deck. Now the rest of the awnings and shed roof will be painted green as well. Now we have everything under cover.
01.01.2022 Yesterday we went for a drive to the Yeerung River area not far from Bemm. There is an old stockmans hut and a huge field of Grass Trees near the hut. Fires eighteen months ago and recent rains made for a bumper crop of flower spikes, the most we have ever seen in one place. Yeerung River runs out to the ocean and is a great place for kayaking swimming and fishing. There are also mileage markers carved into the trees for the stockman. When the weather warms up a bit we might spend some more to out there.
01.01.2022 This week we prepared the vege garden for our summer crops. The first step was to spread a load of mushroom compost then top it off with chicken manure. We still have onions, garlic and leeks growing as well as more silverbeet than we can possibly eat. The broad beans are in full flower with hundreds of bees buzzing around them, so they should produce a bumper crop as well. The strawberries have plenty of flowers and this year we have added blueberry, raspberry and black cu...rrant bushes also. We usually have plenty of potatoes but this year Paul is experimenting by growing them in special bags and building up the soil around the plant to get a more productive crop. The rhubarb is growing so well that we have been dividing the plants and giving them away, as Paul says you can only eat so much rhubarb We will keep you up to date with the progress and when you come to visit next there will be plenty for you to eat, we hope.
01.01.2022 Birds on the deck! All wanting their breakfast.
