23.01.2022 Pickleball is back. Maroondah Voice joined a spirited session of this game in March this year before it had to close due to Covid restrictions. See the attached... flyer for in formation about the free sessions being offered. This is a game that suits people of all ages, is a great family activity and,of course, contributes to health and wellbeing in the form of exercise and community connectedness. The venue is excellent and most of all - it's fun! Mandy Maroondah Voice See more

21.01.2022 With the holiday season approaching are you considering hosting a party, family event or BBQ? Plan #COVIDSafe events with the following practices: Arrange ta...bles and chairs to encourage physical distancing. Consider hosting gatherings outdoors where possible. Serve food in single serve options or consider nominating one person to serve all food so utensils are not over handled Don’t share utensils, tableware, glasses or cutlery, or provide disposable options. Provide hand sanitiser to help maintain good hand hygiene. Provide cleaning supplies that allow guests to wipe down surfaces after use. Use single-use hand towels or paper towels for drying hands so guests do not share a towel. Consider keeping a list of attended guests for potential contract tracing needs. Always check local restrictions. Invite guests to download the COVIDSafe app. Remind guests to stay home and arrange to get tested immediately if they feel unwell. https://www.health.gov.au//how-to-protect-yourself-and-oth

21.01.2022 "Dont be ashamed to cry, Let me see you through, cause Ive seen the dark side too." Today is #RUOKDay, and what better day to launch Scrub Choir 2.0, with... over 400 RMH Staff members singing "Ill stand by you" by The Pretenders. Led by Music Therapy Director Dr Emma OBrien OAM, the Scrub Choir has been an opportunity for staff at the RMH to take a moment out of their busy day, or after a shift on the COVID-19 wards to unwind and reflect. Many people who participated found it a therapeutic experience. Some highlights of this latest instalment include some of our RMH Doctors in a string quartet, Nurse Kathy who leads the song in AUSLAN, and many of our interpreters and nurses sharing their native language. We hope you enjoy our gift to you today. And please, look after yourself. Help and support is available. Please call Lifeline on 13 11 14 for immediate assistance. In an emergency call 000.

20.01.2022 Paddy McCoy, an elderly Irish farmer, received a letter from the Department for Work & Pensions stating that they suspected he was not paying his employees the statutory minimum wage and they would send an inspector to interview them. On the appointed day, the inspector turned up. "Tell me about your staff," he asked Paddy. "Well," said Paddy, "theres the farm hand, I pay him 240 a week, and he has a free cottage. Then theres the housekeeper. She gets 190 a week, along wi...th free board and lodging. Theres also the half-wit. He works a 16 hour day, does 90% of the work, earns about 25 a week along with a bottle of whisky and, as a special treat, occasionally gets to sleep with my wife." "Thats disgraceful" said the inspector, "I need to interview the half-wit." "Thatll be me then," said Paddy! See more

18.01.2022 Father Murphy walks into a pub in Donegal, and asks the first man he meets, Do you want to go to heaven? The man said, I do, Father. The priest said, Then stand over there against the wall.... Then the priest asked the second man, Do you want to go to heaven? Certainly, Father, the man replied. Then stand over there against the wall, said the priest. Then Father Murphy walked up to OToole and asked, Do you want to go to heaven? OToole said, No, I dont Father. The priest said, I dont believe this. You mean to tell me that when you die you dont want to go to heaven? OToole said, Oh, when I die , yes. I thought you were getting a group together to go right now.

17.01.2022 Are you missing your grand children and great-grand children during shutdown? Heres a triple challenge to avoid.

17.01.2022 As we head toward R U OK Day on 10 September and in light of the new advice on lockdowns in Victoria, it might be a good moment to check in with ourselves and t...he people we care about especially with so many older Victorians living alone or feeling isolated from their usual social activities. We have left some difficult months behind us, and still have challenging times ahead. Its important to recognise the range of emotions many us may be feeling so we can find support for ourselves or others when dealing with stress, worry or anxiety. EACHs Partners in Wellbeing program is a free service offering one-on-one support to improve mental wellbeing. You can contact Partners in Wellbeing on 1300 375 330 or find more information via the Seniors Online social support hub: https://www.seniorsonline.vic.gov.au//partners-in-wellbeing If youre concerned about someone you know and would like to let them know youre there, a phone call or physically distanced check in with supplies is a great place to start.

16.01.2022 R U OK Day is this Thursday the 10th of September. We will be sharing lots of information with you on Thursday, in particular how to keep the conversation goin...g beyond R U OK. 15.01.2022 Round 3 now running with new questions!!! Everyone can join in.

15.01.2022 Last night I stumbled upon these two beautiful videos. Yes - I realize they are commercials...but they are also stories. And I love a good story. It's amazing how powerful messages can be conveyed in 60-90 seconds. I'd love to hear your thoughts about these Christmas ads!

14.01.2022 Wishing you a happy, relaxing and fun Saturday.

14.01.2022 To all Victorians, we want to thank you. Even as lockdown and the second wave isnt over just yet. Because its right in the depths of our toughest moments that Victorians show up for each other. And its exactly that spirit thatll continue to fuel us through this.

14.01.2022 Food for thought during Shutdown and for when its over. How Volunteering Benefits Mental Health. In a time where we are all hearing the dreadful statistics on increased mental health issues and suicide rates from COVID-19 led anxiety, a new study confirms what many suspected that volunteering not only helps the community, but also the volunteers mental health.... The peer reviewed The Journal of Happiness Studies which looks at the scientific understanding of subjective well-being published a study into the volunteering habits, mental health, and distress function of 70,000 research participants in the United Kingdom. The study was conducted over an 18 year period. It concluded that people who had volunteered in the past year were more satisfied with their lives and rated their overall health as better. It also found the more regular the volunteering (of at least once a month), volunteers reported better mental health than others in the sample set, and more satisfied with their lives. Volunteers can contribute to a charity through providing their skills with an unpaid or pro-bono arrangement by sharing their expertise on a Board, or help at a grass root level. Volunteers experience a number of factors that contribute to their mental well-being. The authors of the research discovered 3 interesting facts; 1. People that help others experience a warm glowof satisfaction. 2. Volunteering helps people stay connected to one another, especially for older adults in retirement. 3. Volunteering builds opportunities and skills especially in younger adults. These include opportunities for leadership, networking, and other professional skills in the 16-24 and 55-74 age brackets. 11.01.2022 A woman called the police about a potential break in. When they arrived, the policeman was checking around the home for clues. As he entered the main bedroom, the policeman said to the lady of the house: This is the messiest room I ever saw. You should have reported the robbery right away. The woman said: I didnt know it was a robbery. I thought my husband had been looking for a clean shirt!

07.01.2022 "Years ago, anthropologist Margaret Mead was asked by a student what she considered to be the first sign of civilization in a culture. The student expected Mead... to talk about fishhooks or clay pots or grinding stones. But no. Mead said that the first sign of civilization in an ancient culture was a femur (thighbone) that had been broken and then healed. Mead explained that in the animal kingdom, if you break your leg, you die. You cannot run from danger, get to the river for a drink or hunt for food. You are meat for prowling beasts. No animal survives a broken leg long enough for the bone to heal. A broken femur that has healed is evidence that someone has taken time to stay with the one who fell, has bound up the wound, has carried the person to safety and has tended the person through recovery. Helping someone else through difficulty is where civilization starts, Mead said." We are at our best when we serve others. Be civilized.
