This project, which saw over 130 works of art submitted for the exhibition by children aged birth to four years, aims to celebrate, nurture and support the voices of very young children through art. The B4 Early Years Coalition has facilitated a Tasmanian tour of the exhibition and the artworks are currently on display at the Launcesto...n Library until Friday 27th November, 2020. B4 Early Years Coalition is a movement for change to ensure every child in Tasmania is cared for and nurtured through the early years, no matter what. 24.01.2022 To demonstrate Lady Gowrie Tasmania’s commitment to both reconciliation and genuinely learning about our First Nation peoples, members of staff from Head Office in South Hobart took a walk along the along the South Hobart Rivulet Track this morning. This was a time for reflection and understanding the story of the muwinina people of Hobart through palawa wiradjuri artist Luana Towney’s travelling book, ngayapi niyakara - Born to Dream. The story is told through five panels a...long the rivulet track and Luana describes the story as ‘a child friendly history lesson about first contact in nipaluna in both palawa kani and English.’ Luana is a proud Palawa/Wiradjuri woman, painter, basket weaver, shell stringer, poet and photographer. She was recently awarded the First Nations Aboriginal Writers Network Aunty Kerry Reed-Gilbert Open Age Poetry award and the Tasmanian Aboriginal Emerging Writer award in 2020. This walk is family friendly and is a wonderful opportunity for children and families to celebrate and understand the story of the muwinina people of Hobart in an interactive way. 20.01.2022 Lady Gowrie Tasmania Norwood Education and Care Service share their NAIDOC Week reflection below: NAIDOC Week aims to embed respect for indigenous history, culture and stories into our daily practices as an ongoing ‘way of being’. A discussion in the Hilton Room about caring for our land and each other was followed by our Acknowledgement to Country poem, all whilst sitting in a circle on our ‘yarning’ mat. We then shared the book ‘Kangaroos Hop’ written by Ros Moriarty and i...llustrated by Balarinji. Later the children painted small cups using cotton buds and the prominent colours, red, green and yellow, used in the illustrations in the book. The children referred to the animal pictures for inspiration and shared discussions about kangaroos, birds, lizards, goannas and crocodiles. Then we all helped to decorate our ‘yarning tree’ using traditional indigenous colours. Yarning trees, also known as welcoming or belonging trees, are used in some indigenous ceremonies where leaves from the tree are offered to welcome you to everything from the tops of the trees to the roots of the earth. The tree symbolises a link between community, country and is a means by which to honour the ancestral spirits. Working together to create the yarning tree encouraged genuine conversations around indigenous culture and acknowledged the value of each child’s story and experience. 02.01.2022 Lady Gowrie Tasmania Battery Point Education and Care Service share their NAIDOC Week 2020 reflection and photos below: ‘Aboriginal body painting or art and personal ornamentation is an ancient tradition which carries deep spiritual significance for the Australian Indigenous People. Their cultural rituals including body painting differ between Aboriginal Tribes and topographic location. It is related to spiritual matters and is very creative in character. The specific designs... and motifs used by the Aboriginals reveal their relationships to their family group, social position, tribe, precise ancestors, totemic fauna and tracts of land.’ Quote taken from Artlandish Aboriginal Art Gallery website. This week the children from the Kelly and Runnymede Rooms were engaged in representational Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art exploration in the garden, using both watered down clay to represent a similar product that would have been used traditionally and earthen coloured water paints. There was great interest in this experience due to the direct connection between the children’s eagerness to engage in body painting this year and their ongoing journey of learning about the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and their practices. We thank our wonderful educator, Corin, for encourging the children’s use of natural materials to make the homemade tools to paint with. In the Kelly Room the children also engaged in meaningful discussions about the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flag and what the colours represent. With the clear understanding that the flag is a significant symbol and an original artwork, the children then painted their own flags as a representation of the flag and their ongoing learning.’ It is wonderful to see the children and educators at this service engaging in such genuine and respectful NAIDOC Week celebrations and experiences.
