24.01.2022 Repost from the lovely Norfolk Hotel, this is in their new cocktail lounge, if you have not visited for a while you should! Its had the most amazing plant makeover - and they have this big A0 sized print of mine...

23.01.2022 Home. I really wanted to make this about climate change...but it resisted every word or concept I tried to push. Im finding it hard to go about the usual business of art making when surrounded by so much flux, change and worrisome news. So I get the feeling I want to put things into the world that help the cause a little. But its really hard. So the idea for this became about - its all really precious- home in the larger sense of the word- home grown earth and all life. I ...might try this again. . . . . #earthtemple #lifeonearth #climateemergency #climatechangeartwork #change #tooprecioustolose #australianillustrator #fremantleartist #dowhatyoucan See more

22.01.2022 Mends St Murals I Joanna Brown Laeline Design Studio I 2019 Our friends at the City of South Perth have presented an inspired mural project which brings togethe...r organisational strategy and planning with resident engagement with a mutual desire to contribute to the local community. Background The mural commissions came about as a result of two drivers. The first was a community aspiration for commissioning one or more murals in Mends St precinct, which was led by a small group of residents and business people who were interested in the activation of the Mends Street precinct. This community working group initially intended to seek funding from various sources to commission an artist to produce a mural somewhere along Mends Street. The second driver was the first stage of the City of South Perths Connect South project https://southperth.wa.gov.au//projects-and-p/connect-south - for the redevelopment of the foreshore near Mends Street jetty and the enhancement of Mends Street, North of Mill Point Road. The Connect South project is supported by the Federal Governments National Stronger Regions Round 3 funding. Within the Connect South Masterplan Concept Design there was a proposal to commission murals for some of the laneways along this stretch of Mends Street as relatively low cost, and quick win enhancements. Upon identifying that these two projects had independently proposed to commission murals in parallel, the @CityofSouthPerth sought to bring them together in a mutually beneficial and collaborative way. As a consequence, the budget for the mural commissions was provided from the Connect South project, and the @CityofSouthPerth worked closely with the community working group to develop the project and select the artist and concepts for commissioning. The City was also fortunate to secure the support and permission of the private owners of two suitable walls. The brief was developed with reference to the place themes developed for the Connect South project by landscape architects Place Laboratory, but also with reference to the aspirations of the community working group for murals. The community working group nominated a short list of Western Australian mural artists who were then invited to develop and submit concept proposals for one or both of the sites. A selection panel of key stakeholders including community working group members, property owners, and Connect South project team members then selected the concepts that were considered best fit at each site. The concepts submitted by Joanna Brown (Laeline Designs) for both sites were selected by the panel for commissioning. The Murals Jo Browns mural concepts engaged with the Garden Suburb place theme for Connect South, which references the @CityofSouthPerths long history of planting and maintaining street trees and green open spaces, and is a key part of the Citys identity emerging from community consultation. The artist identified that the Garden Suburb theme actually encompassed both civic/public gardens and domestic/private gardens and this was a key point of departure for her two concepts. At the first site, 16-20 Mends Street, immediately to the North of the Windsor Hotel, the artist has delivered a mural that responds to the Citys important civic gardens and features iconic native flowers, including the Kangaroo Paw and the Wattle State and National floral emblems respectively. The artist intends the chosen native flowers to speak very clearly of place, and also in its formality and symmetry to playfully suggest something like a crest or coat of arms. The artist says: The use of these native flowers locates this mural by placing it within Australia, Western Australia, South Perth and then Mends Street, the street that leads to the front row seats of our capital city skyline. - Joanna Brown At the second site, an alfresco seating area on the eastern side of the BP Service Station on Mends Street, the artist has created a mural that speaks more about the Citys many home and apartment gardens, and their diversity and importance for place. It is presented in a partially enclosed space where people are invited to sit and have time to explore the detail and nuance of the twinned murals which are like floral arrangements or bouquets. These works feature native flowers, tropical species and succulents, vibrant but contained as seen in many home gardens across the City of South Perth. About the artist Joanna Brown is a Fremantle based freelance designer and illustrator whose company Laeline Design Studios, specialises in illustration, event posters and associated merchandise design. A highly credentialed artist, Jo has previously worked with Nannup Music Festival, Fairbridge Music Festival, City of Fremantle, Town of Bassendean and may other local and state wide organisations. 18.01.2022 I feel a little bit dizzy and more than a bit surprised and I may or may not have dropped an F bomb on the phone upon hearing I had been successful from this shortlisting. Egads! Thank you again to all at City of Melville Arts and Events for their ongoing support- and I tell you what! It’s going to be epic watching the road melting machines in action (ha I can’t find an apt emoji for this) (well now I did!)

18.01.2022 And here we go again! The second mural site is underway, back on the brushes. Day 1... . . . .... . #muralwip #mural #botanicalmural #muralist #mendsstreet #cityofsouthperth #publicartwork #kangaroopaws #australiannativeplant #muralsofperth #about4or5days #preyfornorain See more

18.01.2022 The close ups work better in this format I think! My Apple Pencil was in a bio diverse plant wonderland kind of heaven quite innocently and then someone messaged me that there is a hairy muff and legs in this and she is giving birth to a colour laden earth church- and thats something you will never hear again I swear it wasnt there before. Legs and all... Do you see it?

16.01.2022 The lovely Bivouac Canteen and Bar on Williams street, Northbridge are letting me put up 9 big prints. There is an opening event this Sunday 15 November from 4pm, stick your heads in! I'm a bit excited to see this body of work from the last 3 years together in one room and printed large scale. If not this opening event, detour down this street and have a quick squizz if your around in Northbridge, even better go for dinner!

15.01.2022 The City of Stirling have a Christmas Window trail in which 14 West Australian artists and designers paired up with local businesses. There is a vote for your favourite window and win one of 5 ‘Love living local’ $100 hampers. Competition closes 30/12 winners announced a few days later. Vote here! https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CoSwindows

15.01.2022 A botanical half-time ode to the most weirdy beardy year! But the winter sun is shining and amongst other things Im happy to report I have a new mural commission with the City of Melville but more on that later!

15.01.2022 New work - mixing my observational drawings with my own plant musings. Hoping to create a few works this week and get the ideas flowing. Podcasts back on, fan still whirling away, dog stretched out on the floor in the heat.

15.01.2022 York Botanic Art Prize entry. York is closer than I remember- did they move it? Is my car better? It has an abundance of amazing old goldrush hotels and shops- and windows to look at properties and houses on acres for under $250,000- ha! Gallery 152 is on the Main Street... go for a day trip! It’s nice to get out of town if only for a bit. Kangaroo paws! I love ‘em! Did you notice? This is a big giclee print.

13.01.2022 Exquisite floral murals by Joanna Brown of Laeline Design Studio are making the suburb of South Perth shine extra bright in the sunshine. They were shortlisted... in the Best External Mural category in this year's Awards. One mural, in a laneway immediately to the north of the historic Windsor Hotel, responds to South Perths important civic gardens and features Kangaroo Paw and Wattle state and national floral emblems respectively, while the second mural decorates the seating area immediately across the road from the first. It is a nod to the suburbs small home and apartment gardens. With some of Western Australias top tourist attractions in the precinct, such as the Perth Zoo, the City of South Perth has used these murals as a charming and very cost-efficient way to turn heads. #ausstreetartawards #streetart #publicart #mural #siloart #regionalart #regionaltourism #travelaus #seeaustraliafirst #travellingaustralia #muralpainting #wall #urbanart #ruralart #arttourism #streetartistry #streetartist #urbanartist #muralsdaily #SeeAustralia #southperth #westernaustralia

Heat resistant cork backed placemats to be specific, packaged in a box of 4 ( 2 x 2 designs) If you're interested in having a squizz and supporting my early explorations into the made object please visit: laelinedesign.square.site/s/shop Or just give me a hollar if you know me

10.01.2022 I have updated my shop with posters from recent work. These are robust posters on quite a heavy recycled white paper stock with a gloss finish. Im not being precious about these and as such I wont be offended if they are blu tacked to the back of the loo door. That is quite an important place you know. Ha! ALL class! Im also probably much too old to be encouraging the use of blue tac having had to get that stuff off of walls before. Maybe I should make some poster hangers to sell also? Anyways! Posters! They be not so precious or so spenno. Shop is here https://laelinedesign.square.site/s/shop . . . #posters #recentwork #digitalillustration #adobefresco #fresco #australianillustrator

09.01.2022 The dawg is very glad to have me back to himself now that the second mural is also finished! What a fabulous experience it has been. Couldnt of done it without Mike @riggy61 helping on the brushes and Theaker lending me her van @freakerbell shanks! Being on the streets for a few weeks has been pretty entertaining, listening to snippets of life of and convos of people walking by and listening to the glasses clink at the Windsor. I feel like I have inhabited this little bit o...f south Perth... now what was I doing? 09.01.2022 I asked Susie from @pixelpoetry_ to go down and take some pictures on this beautiful sunny weekend we just had, the fence is down, the garden is planted and the artwork does what ever it is that artwork does. 08.01.2022 Looksie - South Perth and I got an inclusion on this list by Perth Happenings- Their most insta-worthy walls for 2020- Made the cut! 07.01.2022 Long works stage 4 - very much enjoying the freedom I have given myself for this series. Im still working from life but also engaging my design brain and releasing the constraints I had previously applied, It feels a little bit like Im having some sort of creative leak. So last week I had the most enormous hornet terrorising me in my studio , I had to be super brave and get close enough to let it out of the window- hence the hornet inclusion. Its early autumn... its ru...st tones and yellow, the sun still bakes but I can feel it all changing soon. . . . . . . #solandra #botanicalillustration #botanicillustration #westaustralianillustrator #westernaustralianillustrator #australianillustration #australiansurfacepatterndesigner #impossibleplants #powerfulplants #plantsofthegods #fantasticalbotanicals #plantart See more

06.01.2022 Retail therapy! I have my first two A2 ( 420 x 594mm) posters of this artwork for sale in my online store. On 200gsm paper. But seriously we will get used to this feeling of bewilderment, and as an artist, I am going to try and set up a little poster side hustle- side hustle sounds more on the side than I think I might need it to be, but anyways might want one of these - I have two- help me print more! they are available at the below link- Gawd I'm so bad at this bit... https://laelinedesign.square.site/s/shop

06.01.2022 Gosh Im posting a lot today! But this is the artwork mentioned in the previous post for the WA Greens Party (FB wouldnt let me tag a website and post pics!)

06.01.2022 A Christmas window for the City of Stirling at a shop La Luna on Beaufort street in Inglewood. I didn’t design it as a heart shape but there it was showing up in the monochrome undercoat. Which makes it more satisfyingly Christmas 2020 somehow.... Assisted by Mike Rigoll. Thanks everyone for a morning well spent.

05.01.2022 So this is a sample of a round thing... at the moment there are a series of two- should I sell them in pairs or a pack of 4? I guess maybe there could be both.

05.01.2022 Shameless! My online shop is all topped up with BIG posters and block mounted prints of the works up at Bivouac Canteen & Bar in Northbridge plus a few other bits and pieces. I can probably get them by Christmas if ordered in the next few days. https://laelinedesign.square.site/s/shop

05.01.2022 Day 2- Im pretty happy with how its progressing bit by bit by bit! Also featuring the mad skills of @riggy61 . . . #muralwip #muralday2 #botanicalmural #muralinprogress #muralpainting #cityofsouthperth #lookslikemydrawing #mendsstreet #publicartwork #publicart

04.01.2022 Hey! So now these are a thing! They are a bit happy to be in the world. So the thing is I have been wanting to get some bigger images out there but have found the cost of printing to be inhibitive which makes the sale price inhibitive for most and then after all that they need to be very expensively framed! (like the big print on the left which has just been placed in that frame temporarily) Not these babies! Ready to grace a space. . . . . #perthart #wip #longart #westernaustralianartist #westaustralianwildflowers #botanical #botanicalartworks #wallpieces #botanicaltextiles #wannagobigger

04.01.2022 A share from a share- I spent lots of January holed up in a dusty work site working on a big colab with 4 other illustrators. Did I say it was big? 70 square metres I think. Freo Social is soon to open- the drill hall/ old Fly By Night lives to fight another day. Video by #Vam_Media

04.01.2022 So back around we go- the first two murals back into digital print and onto cards.... I will be selling some of these and others at the launch of these murals on Saturday 10 August between 10 and 12 on Mends street. All welcome. 04.01.2022 Backing up 2 days of grounding drawing. Getting in close and celebrating the imperfect irregular details of 2 wattle samples from a walk on the Applecross river forshore. 02.01.2022 Love it when there is a second one hiding in the first...

01.01.2022 Sweet sweet days off in the summer heat to draw... Happy New Year!

01.01.2022 Prints! 1m x 1m (biggly big!) block mounted print- as seen in the City of Melville’s award exhibition atm- $390 ready to hang. I’m totes loving the block mounted prints right now, they be smooth dark and bright and reminding me of all the block mounted prints of my childhood. You remember them right? The wolf packs, horses galloping and hmmm what else? Fast cars? Girls in bikinis? I just think block mounting is cool. Must be a generational thing. As digital artist I do think it seems to suit my work. Buuut! Having said that I also have a range of gicleé prints that usually require framing. I will get some more big block mounted prints done soon, most likely of my long botanical works- so maybe watch this space. PM (DM?) for chats, it’s probs easiest.

01.01.2022 New adobe tools - new artwork - who dis? Bit like my week really- spring is really busting a move now, flowers are rustling forth, but the flames! The earth is burning , things are heating up, and I got all fired up, but now I cant stand to hear Gretas crying speech, but man I really felt it last week. Im up down and around and then its all cool and then I remember that things are shit and I should be doing protest art... so anyways - here it is and I couldnt fucking stop once I started... so its probs a good thing for my roller coaster mind.
