20.01.2022 Fire season is in full swing. Please ensure you take the time to make an emergency exit plan for yourself & your stock. Be preventative -remember i bale of hay can take 500 liters of water to extinguish..

17.01.2022 It was a tremendous turnout of 36 participants at the QHC / Equestrian Victoria Large Animal Rescue information workshop. Held in Indoor Arena 1 at Werribee Park National Equestrian Centre, the workshop attracted 23 SES volunteers and senior managers plus five CFA volunteers, one vet, two NEC groundsmen, several NCAS coaches and a good selection of horse owners. Hoss, the Queensland Horse Council Large Animal Rescue training mannequin, was able to travel the 1643 kilometres f...rom South East Queensland to Werribee courtesy of our new sponsor DRT Logistics http://www.drtlogistics.com.au/ While DRT is not a horse business, its owners Margaret and Shane Splatt are the parents of Nicole Graham who became trapped in mud at a Geelong beach with her horse Astro in 2012. Margaret and Shane are now passionate supporters of the emergency services that rescued Nicole and Astro and have extended their support to the QHC Large Animal Rescue Roadshow. We value their sponsorship greatly as it enables us to transport Hoss and other bulky rescue training equipment to areas far from our base, significantly increasing the quality of our workshops in these remote areas. Nicole and Astro were my special guests at the EV workshop where Nicole showed photos of the rescue and discussed her ordeal in detail while Astro posed for photos and was more than happy to accept scratches and carrots. Nicole has generously offered to assist me at future workshops in Victoria and, if we’re lucky, we may be able to persuade Astro to tag along too. It was good to have the classroom just a step away from the arena where we did the practical and our thanks to Werribee CFA who brought a rescue truck at lunchtime. As always, it was a revelation to participants to see the amount of equipment on these trucks and what can be used or adapted to rescue animals. Within days of the workshop, I received an email from one of the participants to say she and her husband had been able to use what they learnt to rescue a cow. They made an improvised rescue glide from a gate panel with a sheet of iron and horse rug on top, rolled the cow onto their glide and dragged the glide with a tractor. Improvising again, they used webbing to try to get her to her feet but sadly she was unable to support her own weight and they were forced to euthanase her. Lyn said, The ideas I learnt at your workshop were simple and made the problem of rescuing her much easier to solve. The workshop was so successful that Equestrian Victoria has invited us to conduct another in September. EV is also purchasing rescue equipment in preparation for the 2014 eventing season. The next QHC Large Animal Rescue workshop is at Bundaberg in Queensland on Saturday 21 June, followed by another visit to Victoria, to Portland on Saturday 28 June. See more
