25.01.2022 As always, we take the health and safety of our community very seriously. We'll be meeting tomorrow to make some tough decisions about our classes and services. We'll make sure to update you as soon as possible! But rest assured we are here for you and your pets in what ever way is safe!

25.01.2022 Let's get this challenge started! We'll be here LIVE on Facebook TOMORROW at 11am. We'll tell you all about the challenge, give you a crash course on body language and clicker/marker training, and then give the FIRST TRAINING CHALLENGE! We'll allow time for questions if there are any - post any questions for us below or tune in live!... See you tomorrow at 11am #lockdowninstapet

24.01.2022 The trainers from Laika Pet Training answering your questions about dogs and lockdown: - Separation anxiety when you return to working away from home - Keeping them out of trouble while youre at home - Unexpected challenges of lockdown - Silver linings of lockdown with dogs... www.laikapettraining.com/online

23.01.2022 We had an awesome chat with the gals at Dogfolk Pet Photography on Monday! They specialise in candid photos of dogs in their home. One awesome tip they gave was waiting for the dog to relax. So, this week’s #lockdowninstapet challenge is all about CAPTURING CALMNESS! Capturing calmness is a common topic amongst reward based trainers. From a training perspective, it’s about noticing those moments when your dog is relaxing and reinforcing that moment! The keys to this train...ing are: Pay attention to your dog - every moment they are doing something you like is an opportunity to reward that thing! If you notice them relaxing in their bed or on the couch (and you like them being on the couch), you can encourage this by dropping a treat for them. It doesn’t have to be the highest value treat, highly food motivated dogs may see high value treats as an invitation to train and switch into ‘training’ mode instead of ‘relaxing’ mode Avoid using a marker (‘yes’ or a clicker) or saying anything to excite them - we want them to remain chilled, not switch on to ‘training’ mode. If you can’t resist talking to them then whispering good dog in a calm way is enough. Just give one treat - if they look at you expectantly at first just calmly tell them that’s all and show your hands. After a few times they will start to realise one treat doesn’t always mean more treats are coming. If we practice this HEAPS while we’re at home in lockdown, we’ll be great at it when we can finally take them to the cafe, pub, sport matches, bbqs, etc. And we’ll be on our way to a dog that can relax anywhere! Calm dogs make for better photos too! We want to avoid chicken eyes - where your dog is staring at you/the food intensely anticipating the treat Once you’ve practiced noticing when your dog is relaxed, you can snap a photo or two and THEN drop a treat to reinforce the calmness. This pattern of SNAP PHOTO >> GIVE TREAT will also help your dog LOVE being in front of the camera! I wish someone gave me a treat every time they took a photo of video of me Katy and Shell were so wonderful to talk to and gave SO many great photography tips! You can watch the whole chat here - https://www.facebook.com/watch/ They’re also available to give feedback on your photos if you tag them @dogfolkpetphotography here on Facebook, or @dogfolk_ on Instagram - and don’t forget #lockdowninstapet! Happy training!

23.01.2022 Here's Momo practicing things in our "attention toolkit" that our Senior Puppy School students are practicing this week! Getting and keeping your puppies attention is the foundation to everything else - if they can't pay attention to you, they can't follow your requests! Video includes: - Respond to name - Attention getting sounds - Find It/food scatter - Luring - Hand target - 1 2 3 catch - Puppy push ups - Sit beside - Middle - Feed feed feed feed

21.01.2022 Shelley here! This week we’re challenging you to train your pet for taking better selfies with them, OR more precisely to look at the camera when you’re NOT directly behind it. Here’s my session with Momo today. It was a bit of a trial and error session, but here’s what I did: - I started by luring him to look at the camera lens, marking ‘yes’ and then rewarding - After a few goes with the lure, I used the same movement and hand shape but with no food in my hand... - Once he was following the hand with no food, I added the cue word cheeeese - Next I wanted to generalise in different positions so I started again but with him sitting instead of standing (but we moved quicker through the steps) - Then I tried a different method where I swung my hand out with the phone in it and marked when he looked at it - this might work better for some animals! I didn’t work that well for Momo (as you can see in the video) After a break I decided to see if I could get him into position for a selfie. For us, this meant me sitting on the ground cross-legged, with him putting his paws up on my leg. I started by luring him into this position (with a bit of trial and error), and then repeated the look-at-the-camera training in this position. Notice: I didn’t put my arm over the top/around him because 1) it can be off putting for many dogs, and 2) I wanted him to be voluntarily participating on the selfie, not being held in position! Give these methods a try, and let us know what works for you. And make sure to share your selfie results!

10.01.2022 When Momo was younger he was a bit of a nervous puppy, and when I let him off leash he would stick close by, check in regularly, and come to me when we called him. Now he’s 10 months old and a lot has changed! He’s gained SO much confidence ( yay Momo!) and learned that playing with other dogs is AWESOME FUN! But if he’s allowed to play with dogs I’m practically invisible So, we’ve been getting serious about come-when-called training. I took my phone on our walk this mor...ning to take some video about what we’ve been doing. It’s not quite ready yet - will hopefully go out tomorrow so watch this space. In the meantime here’s a short video I took when he was distracted by some off leash dogs nearby. I was so proud of him! Share your come-when-called (or lack of recall) stories below! [Video: a 12 second video of a papillon puppy, at the end of a 5 metre leash looking away from the camera. The camera person calls him and makes excited noises and he runs back. The camera person is excited, praises him, and gives him a treat.]

02.01.2022 Some dogs may find people in masks scary or intimidating. If you haven't already, try putting on a mask at home and seeing how your dog response. If they're unsure - do several short desensitisation sessions by putting on the mask while they have a tasty chew, do some fun play, and/or do some fun training activities. Keep the sessions to just a few minutes long, then take the mask off again. Slowly increase the amount of time you spend in the mask with your dog. Then,... when you go out with them make sure you bring some tasty treats. Every time they look at someone with a mask (which is hopefully everyone!), give them a morsel. They'll soon learn that masks are nothing to be worried about, and even predict good things! If your dog is very scared, or they seem to be getting worse instead of better, please get in touch for some more tailored advice!

02.01.2022 Train with us! This is a short training session that you can follow along with with your dog! 01.01.2022 What are you desensitising your pet to for our #lockdowninstapet challenge this week? Momo finds baths so stressful he doesn't even like going in the bathroom! We've already been working on helping him feel better about the situation - here he is eating treats off the side of the bath! -- To getting started with desensitisation:... 1. Settle on a goal. E.g. having a bath, be blow dried and then brushed (this is a HUGE goal!); OR wear a harness or jumper comfortably 2. Start at an intensity that your pet is completely comfortable with. They should have a relaxed body and happily take treats. E.g. 1) eating treats tossed into the bathroom; OR 1) eat a treat from one hand while the harness or jumper is in the other hand 3. Break it down into TINY steps, and then only move onto the next one once your pet is relaxed and happily taking treats (no snatching!). E.g. 2) Taking treats from me in the bathroom, 3) doing basic cues in the bathroom, 4) putting our paws up on the side of the bath, 5) taking treats in the bathroom while the water is running (not in the bath yet!), 6) being lifted up near the bath, 7) being lifted into the bath having a treat and being lifted out again, being in the bath for 5 seconds, 9) being in the bath for 10 seconds, etc. OR 2) take a treat from my hand with the harness or jumper draped over that arm, 3) take a treat from my hand with the harness or jumper over my wrist, 4) take a treat from my hand right at the opening of the harness or jumper, 5) take a treat with their nose *slightly* through the opening, 6) take a treat with their nose/head slightly further through the opening, etc. 4. Be patient and expect to stay on each stage for at least 1 or 2 sessions. 5. If your pet is reluctant or showing signs of stress (refer to our session from last week if needed!), then go back to a step that theyre more comfortable with and progress more slowly. Remember: Slow is fast! Doing this process step by step can feel slow and tedious, but its MUCH easier and faster than rushing it and then having an animal that really hates it and having to change that association. Look at Momo and his aversion to the bath. If we had started with some slow desensitisation to the bath, we probably wouldnt have had to move all the way out of the bathroom to help him feel comfortable!
