24.01.2022 WEST BASIN DEVASTATION UNDERWAY The damage to West Basin by the Federal, and ACT Government managers has commenced. The image below shows the initial step of the installation of the double row of silt curtains. The red line highlights the location of the silt curtain The promenade is to be installed 80m from the existing lake edge near the jetty. The so-called public realm is to be a 55 m strip, including the promenade, a bike path, a public strip for commercial enterprises a...nd probably a public road. The foreground of the image below that includes trees and parking areas, the jetty and old boat house will all be obliterated by the high-rise development. See more

24.01.2022 Platypus on the Brink of Extinction The Conservation Council of the ACT representing 45 non-government environment groups provided a submission supporting the West Basin lake infill to the NCAs works approval consultation. Along with other parts of Lake Burley Griffin, West Basin was a foraging ground of platypus that are now declared to be on the brink of extinction by the University of NSW. Not only has the platypus foraging ground diminished but the turbulence pollution now present in the Lake from the infill works will encourage blue-green algae blooms this summer. The CEO of the Conservation Council should be thoroughly shamed for leading support for the environmental damaging West Basin development. What is the Conservation Council doing to ameliorate this abysmal situation for the Lake Burley Griffin platypus?

19.01.2022 Photos of West Basin taken 4 Nov 2020, showing the destruction of trees along the shore line and the commencement of filling in 3 hectares of Lake Burley Griffin. The pictures give a perspective of the scale of the destruction extending almost 500 metres along the shoreline, with more than 120 trees removed between the cycle path and the lake edge, and some of the 1500 B Double truck loads of gravel totalling 90,000 tonnes of fill already starting to be dumped into the lake near the ferry terminal. As yet, the jetty has not been demolished, but the two stately Ponderosa Pines and the memorial to an early Canberra urban planner nearby have been removed.

17.01.2022 Removal of about 120 trees has commenced to make way for the infil of 3 hectares of Lake Burley Griffin's West Basin. Looks like the poplars by the waters edge adjacent to the ferry jetty are the first to go into the mulcher. Two large Ponderosa Pines which we tried to have saved (unsuccessfully) are slated for the chop, plus more than 100 other exotic and native species in Acton Park.

16.01.2022 Like a pair of dinosaur's feeding .... machines destroy trees along the West Basin foreshore today to make way for the ACT Government's $30 million infilling of 3 hectares of Lake Burley Griffin as part of the Acton Foreshore mixed use precinct. The felling of more than 120 trees on the lake side of the existing bike path is almost complete. We calculate that about 1500 "B double" truck loads of fill, or about 90,000 tonnes, will be required to infill this part of the lake to create a 500 m foreshore promenade.

16.01.2022 Status update on the infill of 2.8 ha of Lake Burley Griffin for the ACT Government's Acton Waterfront Phase 2 to create a 4 ha park to front a new urban development site for apartments and commercial buildings.

13.01.2022 The Guardians are supporting the National Capital Authority's improvement strategy for Kings Park in the Central Basin. We have a few reservations with regard to the Blundells Cottage precinct but we believe these are manageable. Generally we believe the changes to Wendouree Drive, lakeside paths, parking and landscaping will be beneficial for all lake foreshore users, notably cyclists, scooter riders and pedestrians. Guardians and supporters are welcome to make their own submissions. Just search Kings Park Improvement Strategy on the NCA's webpage for details. Comments are due by close of business Friday. https://www.google.com//data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x244a6205e410

11.01.2022 SIGNIFICANT RECENT COMMENTS FROM ELECTION CANDIDATES Below are statements supplied to us by Elizabeth Lee (of the Liberal Party), Independent Fiona Carrick and John Haydon (Sustainable Australia Party) for the upcoming ACT election. Independent Bruce Payne also has provided a message of support. Statement from Elizabeth Lee MLA, Candidate for Kurrajong Electorate 28.9.20... "I confirm that the Canberra Liberals are opposed to apartment developments at West Basin but would be open to upgrades to amenities such as a walkway or footpath, and a cafe or two (that type of small retail). We remain firmly of the view that the lake should be accessible to all Canberrans." Statement on West Basin from Fiona Carrick Independent Candidate for Murrumbidgee Electorate 28.9.20 "I expect the government to undertake collaborative planning for the west basin site and listen to the views of the community to find a balance between open space, community and commercial facilities and development. It is vital that the foreshore remains available to the residents of Canberra for their enjoyment, it should not be privatised for the benefit of a few." Statement from John Haydon, Sustainable Australia Candidate for Kurrajong Electorate 28.9.20 "Sustainable Australia Party would like to state its opposition to selling off any public land in the Acton Park area for housing. Instead, we would like to see investment in the environment and heritage of the area, with improved public access and green space. It is outrageous that apartments will be allowed to destroy the amenity and district views. It is time to protect our environment, stop overdevelopment and stop corruption."
