18.01.2022 A little bit of Lake Argyles young history revealed. With the lowest water levels in nearly 30 years, the original tour boat "MARY DURACK" has appeared on a remote beach. After being christened on the Swan River in Perth by Dame Mary Durack in 1973, the vessel operated the first boat cruises on Lake Argyle for several years before being retired and converted to a "mother ship" for the local fishing fleet. It was not long before a huge storm hit the lake and the "MARY DURAC...K" and 3 smaller fishing vessels were sunk in the rough seas. She now lies in shallow waters just off the aptly named Mary Durack Island near the Grass Castle Plains wetlands in the central area of Lake Argyle. With recent rains the Mary Durack will soon slip beneath the waters again for who knows how long..... (Images courtesy of the state library of WA) The Kimberley Echo Western Australia See more

08.01.2022 There has been a bit of chatter about Lake Argyles water levels lately but it is not as bad as you might think. The lake is around 48% of designed storage volu...me, which is just over a meter below the original designed full storage capacity. This level was an "average" end of dry season level before they raised the spillway overflow by 6 meters in 1994. The overflow level (spillway) was raised to allow for the additional water which would be used by the Ord Hydro Power Station which was commissioned in 1996. By plugging the spillway with a simple and very effective, 6 meter high concrete wall (built by just 6 men over a few weeks), the storage level of the lake was almost doubled from 5,800 Giga Litres to 10,700 Giga Litres. The original Spillway was at 86.23 meters above sea level (AHD) with the new overflow raised to 92.2 meters AHD. Today Lake Argyle is just under 85 meters AHD, compared to the lowest level in 1990 when it dropped below 79 meters and the highest in 2011 at over 101 meters AHD. Lake Levels: 1990 - 2019 Lowest: 1990: 79 m / 350 km2 / 2,150 GL / 20% Current: 2019: 85 m / 620 km2 / 5,000 GL / 48% Full Storage level: 92.2 m / 980 km2 / 10,700 GL / 100% Highest: 2011: 101 m / 1,500 km2 / 21,500 GL / 200% Lake Argyles highest capacity to date was 10 times more water than the lowest level since filling in 1974. The Google Earth images below clearly show the difference in surface area and volume at the lowest in 1990 and the highest in 2011. Out of interest, during the big wet of 2011, the water flow into Lake Argyle in just 10 days was more than what is in the Lake today and more than twice the 1990 volume....so it can fill up pretty quickly!
