23.01.2022 Landcarer Wendy was excited to have found some Red Beard Orchids (Calochilus paludosus) at her Keith Barry Oval Landcare site, so John Sharples went along to take this beautiful photo. The Red Beard Orchid is a perennial terrestrial orchid. It produces clusters of up to nine flowers about 25mm across in spring and early summer from October to December. The Orchid can be found in eastern New South Wales, southern Victoria, eastern Queensland and parts of Tasmania, as well as a...cross the Tasman in New Zealand! If you have an interesting nature or wildlife picture, we’d love to see it! Send your photos and drawings to [email protected] and you could feature in our Landcare Sightings segment.

12.01.2022 Get your plant orders in for 2021! Now is a great time to look ahead to 2021 - including planting on your Landcare sites. Growing plants for distribution from the Landcare Resource Centre nursery can take up to 6 months (for the plants that we have seed stock of). It is important to note:... Some plants such as Coffee Bush (Breynia oblongifolia) and most Rainforest plants, produce seed that can’t be stored and if seasons are not favourable some may not produce seed for a few years! For seed collection, limiting factors include: -Weather conditions for the season -Having a suitably diverse number of plants to collect seed from Seed needs to be within reach- many trees have seed well out of reach of even our tallest pole pruner! Planning your work year. -If your group does planting each year, it may be worthwhile to put in an advance order for plants. You can order a set number of plants with staged pick up, dates/months in line with working bees. -We can help you choose the plants to suit your site. If you have specific species of plants in mind, ordering in advance will increase the likelihood of supply. Please note that depending on the size of the order, the minimum notice required for plant orders is up to 4 weeks. If your group would like to plant next year, get in touch with us to secure your plant order now! Please email [email protected] or phone 4921 0392.

11.01.2022 Do you have litter polluting your Landcare site? Clean Up Australia Day is coming up on Sunday 7 March so now is the time to plan for and register a clean up event. Council will be automatically notified of your designated collection point and will arrange for rubbish to be collected based on the location details you have registered; Promote your clean up event to friends, family and community members. Be sure to let us know at the Landcare Resource Centre so that we can help spread the word too! And lastly have fun! To register your site, visit https://www.cleanup.org.au/creating-a-clean-up-event. 10.01.2022 This stunning photo of Native Cherry (Exocarpos cupressiformis) was taken by John Sharples of Arbre Close Landcare. The Native Cherry is hemiparasitic; it can photosynthesise, but gains extra nutrients by attaching its roots to host plants. Indigenous Australians ate the fruit, used the wood for spear throwers and reportedly used the sap as a treatment for snakebite. Do you have a Landcare sighting? We'd love to see it.... Send your photos and drawings to [email protected] and you could feature in our Landcare Sightings segment.

The group plans to hold a small event today with other residences of the village to share their success and rais...e awareness about the value of native plants. 07.01.2022 FRIEND OR FOE? The Formosa Lily (Lilium formosanum) may try to befriend you with its dazzling white flowers, but do not be deceived! This wicked foe has escaped from gardens and established itself as an invasive weed in urban bushland, road verges and drainage reserves. It multiplies rapidly with each flower dispersing thousands of papery, winged seeds. Hand weeding is the best option for Landcarers and home gardeners. Carefully dig out the entire bulb including some of... the surrounding soil so that you catch any smaller bulblets that may have broken away. Or at the very least, remove the flowers stem before it is able to set seed. On the other hand, The Swamp Lily (Crinum pedunculatum) is well-deserving of your love. This friend is native to Australia and grows naturally in swamps and along streams in coastal regions of NSW, QLD and Northern Territory. It is very attractive with its long, broad leaves and eye-catching flowers that are pleasantly perfumed. Swamp Lily tubestock can be purchased from our nursery at the Landcare Resource Centre. We are open for plant sales from 8 3:30pm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, or by appointment. See more

03.01.2022 Bob Spargo of Kenibea Landcare recently sent in this photo of the stunning Eastern Rosella (Platycercus eximius). Despite their bright colours, Eastern Rosellas plumage is patterned so that it creates an extremely effective camouflage which assists the birds in avoiding detection by potential predators when feeding among the grass or perched on foliage in the treetops. Do you have a Landcare sighting? We'd love to see it.... Send your photos and drawings to [email protected] and you could feature in our Landcare Sightings segment.

02.01.2022 Are your shoes up to the task? Landcare activities can be diverse and require sturdy covered shoes to ensure your safety. You may think your covered slip-ons are enough but consider the following Landcare activities when you would need more protection: -Working with sharp or heavy tools and materials sturdy covered shoes capable of withstanding an impact from dropped tools and protecting your foot are essential. Steel capped or leather boots are ideal, canvas or slipper... style materials are not -Working on uneven ground Ankle protection (i.e. boots) will help prevent ankle injuries -Working in adverse weather conditions such as rain where you may require waterproof/resistant shoes -In areas with heavy undergrowth where there is risk of stepping on glass or littered syringes make sure the sole of your shoe is thick enough to offer protection from injury Please contact the Landcare Resource Centre if you have any concerns about if your footwear is adequate for your Landcare work.

02.01.2022 Can you spot the cute critters in this photo? Grey-Headed Flying Foxes are one of the largest bats in Australia with a wingspan of over 1 metre. They play a vital role in our ecosystem, pollinating flowers of over 50 native trees and dispersing seeds from the fruit they eat. Sadly, numbers have decreased dramatically over the last 50 years due to habitat clearing. As a result, they are now listed as vulnerable to extinction. This photo was taken by Winsome Lambkin at Fl...oraville where a local resident had been welcoming this family group of between 10-20 Grey-Headed Flying Foxes to neighbourhood. The group also have visiting relatives coming occasionally for a few days or so and occasionally a third larger group of riff raff friends joining them. Do you have a Landcare sighting? We'd love to see it! Send your photos and drawings to [email protected] and you could feature in our Landcare Sightings segment.

02.01.2022 The Landcare Resource Centre will close at 4pm on Wednesday 23 December and reopen on Monday 4 January. The Green Team finishes on Wednesday 16 December and resume on Monday 18 January. We wish you all a safe and happy festive season!
