25.01.2022 For actions performed on this day in 2010 Corporal Daniel Keighran was awarded the Victoria Cross. During an ambush by a large Taliban force at Derapet, in Afgh...anistans Tangi Valley, Corporal Keighran deliberately and repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire to draw attention away from a mortally wounded comrade Lance Corporal Jared MacKinney. Throughout the long action his bravery assisted the patrol to return accurate fire and to successfully withdraw without further casualties. Corporal Keighrans Victoria Cross, on loan to the Memorial, is on display in the Hall of Valour. Learn more: http://ow.ly/yuti50B6S1D Photo: P10927.001

23.01.2022 Thirty-six years after they were stolen, Vietnam veteran Athol Millar was astonished to learn that his service medals had been found! Athol was living in Burpen...gary and serving in the Australian Army when he and his wife returned from an Easter break to discover their house had been broken into and his medals were missing. He didnt expect to see them again and ordered a replacement set. Earlier this year, Athol was contacted and told the happy news they had been found in a suitcase full of items handed into a thrift store, who then handed them over to the Gympie RSL Sub Branch. After contacting DVA, the medals were traced back to Athol, who is now retired and living in Blackbutt. Blackbutt RSL Sub Branch President Walter Jacobson and members of the Sub Branch presented Athol with his long-lost medals. It just goes to show that you should never give up hope!

20.01.2022 A digger with his dog watch for the Viet Cong during Operation Paddington. The photograph taken in July 1967, is of Tiber, a Labrador tracker dog with the 7th B...attalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (7RAR), on piquet duty with his personal handler, Lance Corporal Norman Leslie (Norm) Cameron of Kingston, South Australia. Tiber arrived in Vietnam on the 12th of May 1967. He was one year into his tour of duty with 1RAR when he went missing during the attack at Fire Support Base Coral on the 15th-16th of May 1968. Tiber was shell-shocked and spends days wandering aimlessly. Tiber went into retirement in June 1970 and transferred to a new home with staff at the Australian Embassy in Saigon. Eleven tracker dogs went to Vietnam between April 1967 and September 1971, but they could not return home when their tour of duty ended. Lest We Forget. 10.01.2022 Looking Beyond the #19thAmendment Today, the Navajo Nation celebrates our Navajo Code Talkers who served their country in WWII. A salute to a local Navajo hero... who grew up herding sheep and tending crops on the best place on the rez to be Navajo. Sophie Yazzie was born in 1914 and raised in Canyon de Chelly before Native Americans gained US citizenship. In 1943, she looked into becoming a Navajo Code Talker, but was told the Marines were not accepting women. Instead she enlisted in the Armys Women Auxiliary Corps and headed to Florida for basic training before being stationed in Texas. By the time she was allowed to vote in AZ in 1948, she was honorably discharged, married and employed. Many legal and cultural barriers remained for Native American voters as AZ law required voters had to prove they could read and write English. Sophie was one of the lucky few because she graduated from Wingate Boarding School. She also worked there until she was 70 years old. Sergeant Sophie Yazzie was one of the longest living female WWII veterans at 105 years old. This courageous and beautiful mother of four wouldve turned 106 on August 17. #HometownHero #FindYourPark #WomenWarriors #WomensHistory #BeyondThe19th

09.01.2022 Congratulations and happy 105th birthday Lt. Charles Dever. Thank you for your service.

09.01.2022 I can happily report that the sub-Branch did successfully conduct a commemoration service for the 75th Anniversary of the Victory in the Pacific. The ceremony, ...held in Prince Alfred Square on Saturday 15th August at 9.45am, was attended by 12 sub-Branch members as well as the Parramatta Lord Mayor Bob Dwyer and Deputy Lord Mayor Michelle Garrard. Attendance at this ceremony was also restricted due to COVID-19 regulations restricting numbers to outdoor public events to 20 people. We were fortunate to have clear bright skies for the ceremony. Our thanks go to Rev. David Ould from St Johns Cathedral for leading the Prayers, The Lord Mayor and Deputy Lord Mayor for their participation, sub-Branch President Mr Ron Grace for delivering the VP Day oration, and to sub-Branch members also for their attendance.

09.01.2022 What sort of twisted mind would do this to a War Memorial. On Thursday evening the Terrigal Foreshore War Memorial was vandalised with graffiti. It was an un-A...ustralian act to desecrate a memorial dedicated to the thousands of men and women who sacrificed their all for the freedom we enjoy. I hope that the transgressor will be found out and harshly dealt with by his or her peers. Lest they forget. See more

08.01.2022 Battle of Long Tan. Lest we forget.

06.01.2022 Between 1962 and 1975, almost 60,000 Australians served during the Vietnam War, including ground troops and air force and navy personnel; 521 died as a result of the war and over 3,000 were wounded. On 18 August we remember all those who served in the Vietnam War and acknowledge and honour the Vietnam veterans who have lost their lives in the years since they returned and those who still carry the physical and emotional scars of their service and the families that have suppor...ted them. The Battle of Long Tan, on the 18th of August 1966, was one of the fiercest battles fought by Australian soldiers in the Vietnam War, and saw 18 Australians killed and 25 wounded. We will remember them. Lest We Forget. Virtual War Memorial: Australia: The Vietnam War https://vwma.org.au/explore/conflicts/5 Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan

02.01.2022 A special mention to our Navy people deployed for Exercise RIMPAC 2020, which began today. We have four ships, and about 700 people exercising with our internat...ional partners, evaluating our capabilities in high-end warfare training and live-fire exercises, that include missile firings. This year, the renowned RIMPAC exercise is an at-sea only activity due to COVID-19 mitigations. 01.01.2022 Happy New Year HMAS Diamantina. While 2020 was tough in many respects, Diamantina and her crew have overcome adversity to achieve so much. Early in the year Di...amantina participated in Fleet concentration period in Tasmania before helping with OP COVID assist. Directly following this service, Diamantina; both platform and crew, were put through their paces, conducting force generation to achieve Unit Readiness. A big part of the program included three separate maintenance periods and an unscheduled docking through which our Engineering department tirelessly worked and shone. In particular ABMT 'Elle' Siyangkabuth was a standout performer who was chosen by her peers and supervisors for award of Sailor of the year. BZ Elle! There have been several farewells in the closure of 2020 as we lose some from our team to future postings, while others now join out ranks. Fair winds and following seas to those who have moved on and I look forward to getting to know our new team members in 2021. 2021 is going to keep us busy. While this coming year has many challenges set for us, there will undoubtedly be plenty of unknowable obstacles along the way that I am confident we can overcome using the same grit and ingenuity I have witnessed these past months. BZ to the crew of Diamantina for your efforts in 2020. I look forward to sailing with you in 21. CO
