25.01.2022 COACHING UPDATE Equestrian Victoria is still awaiting formal government advice re travel and care for horses under COVID-19 Stage 3 and Stage 4 Restrictions. ...We will update our community as soon as that advice is formalised. In the meantime, please be aware of the following for COACHES. COACHING STAGE 4: From 11:59 PM on Wednesday 5 August, coaches and trainers resident in Stage 4 must work from home and use online and video conferencing facilities to deliver their coaching and training. The exception to this rule is if the coach/trainer is providing services to a rider/s already within their household. STAGE 3: Coaches may continue to coach outdoors and those receiving instruction can only do so with one other person or household member, and only under the following conditions: * Coaching may take place at private and/or agistment facilities or at Outdoor Facilities if there are no safe areas at the private facility and those Outdoor Facilities meet the following conditions: - public gathering and physical distancing limits (1.5 metres and only with one other person or household members) can be adhered to - there is no use of shared equipment or communal facilities. - For outdoor facilities that meet the requirements above and where access is controlled by a club, a booking system is required to be in place to ensure that all restrictions are met. * You can go horse-riding with members of your household or one other person, plus an instructor if required. You should not travel further than you need to, and you should horse ride at the closest available location to your home. * Those receiving instruction should NOT travel outside their local area nor travel distances for coaching. The movement of persons should be kept local. The floating of horses to coaching facilities outside your local area for training is considered non-essential travel. * Coaches may not travel into a Stage 4 area to coach. * You must be able to keep 1.5m distance between yourself and others * Strict hygiene practices must be practiced * Any shared essential equipment such as gates, jump wings, dressage arenas etc should be sanitised before and after use. Sharing of equipment such as helmets gloves and whips is not permitted. #staysafe #equestrianvictoria #lovethehorse

22.01.2022 To help you understand what the horse feels when you sit crookedly in the saddle "Load a wheelbarrow heavily to one side as in the center illustration. Now pu...sh the wheelbarrow, and feel how it pulls to the weighted side and how you are forced to lean in that direction to compensate. That’s how your horse feels when you sit unevenly in the saddle, as shown in the left image. When you sit evenly, the horse will be centered and balanced as shown in the illustration on the right." 19.01.2022 With the recent cold weather following a spate of bot flies laying eggs on horses, NOW is the time to attack these irritating critters! Your horse will thank y...ou for it! Despite how common they are a lot of owners are not fully aware of their life cycle and how serious a problem they can actually be. The life cycle begins as female bot flies lay their eggs on the front legs and bodies of horses. Some horses will actually keep running to avoid the eggs being laid such as the extent that horses do not like botflies! The horses that just stand there and accept the flies usually get the highest burden of eggs laid on them. Each egg is glued to a hair shaft and inside the egg a larvae or maggot will develop within 5 to 10 days. The egg is stimulated to hatch when it feels warm saliva or warm water be licked or rubbed across its surface. The larvae then crawls out onto the tongue or lips and then burrows into the tongue and gums. The holes and damage in the gum and tongue can be significant and some horses will show their irritation to all this by doing excessive tongue licking action or even chewing short pieces of wood to try to alleviate the irritation that the maggots create. The maggots spend roughly one month in the mouth. In that time they moult into the second larval phase . The second level phase then crawls along the horses palate or tongue and is then swallowed. Here In the stomach they moult again to the third instar larval phase, and use the small hooks on their mouth pieces to latch onto the stomach lining. If they are in large enough numbers eg more than 100, it has been reported that they can actually cause considerable damage to the stomach - including ulceration, inflammation , anaemia and even stomach rupture and peritonitis which can be life-threatening. Once the cooler months have passed and the third stage larvae have spent up to 9 to 12 months in the stomach they then release their attachment to the stomach lining and are passed out in the manure where the bot larvae either burrows into the soil or stays in the manure pile and then eventually morph into an adult bot fly! The adult fly then rapidly seeks another fly of the opposite sex where they can mate, the female develops fertile eggs and the life cycle starts over again. As a Horse Owner you can help your horse by killing the larvae on the horse via three different techniques: 1) routinely scrape off the eggs every 1 to 2 days to prevent them developing to the stage where they can hatch. When the eggs fall on the ground they will die within a few days. Its important that owners wash their hands well and dont rub their eyes while doing this as there are reports of horse bot fly maggots actually invading the eyes or skin of humans as well! 2) By wiping the eggs on the hair over every three days with either a rag dampened with kerosene, or with warm water followed by an insecticide such as permoxin, you will kill the larvae, so they are not ingested by the horse. 3) By using a paste dewormer containing either Moxidectin, ivermectin or abamectin, after the larvae have been ingested you will kill those larvae. However this will not stop a fly laying fresh eggs on the horse in the following days or weeks. At EVDS we prefer Moxidectin as it does not kill Dung Beetles like the other 2 do. Dung beetles are important for breaking down the horse manure which helps the soil and helps prevent parasite contamination of pasture. Moxidectin is also the only horse Dewormer that will kill encysted small strongyles in the intestines via a single dose. To help owners be able to afford to use the best Dewormer on the market, EVDS is running a special offer while stocks last on Equest plus tape - Which contains Moxidectin and Praziquantel (for tape worms). With a recommended retail price usually up around $22-$25, We have a special deal where these are selling for $16.50 per tube - Until the end of June 2020. And if you order more than 10 at once you will get free shipping within NSW. So do your horse a favour and place your order with us via either: 1) Facebook msg on the EVDS (Equine Veterinary and Dental Services ) FB page. 2) Email us at [email protected] 3) Phone us on 02 66 424 700.

14.01.2022 CROSS FIBRE GROOMING Grooming is a great way to bond with your horse, locate tight spots and lightly massage the muscles. Cross fibre grooming is excellent for ...keeping the fascia conditioned, helping to smooth sticky fascia and break down adhesions. It stimulates circulation, increases relaxation and promotes release. Using the flat of your hands or your horse’s favourite brush or rubber curry comb, groom the hair at right angles to the direction of growth which is usually also at right angles to the underlying muscles. Cross fibre grooming, you horse will thank you for it. #belindabolsenbroekacademy #horselove #horseconnection #equinehealth #wellnessforhorses #notawasteoftime

11.01.2022 EQUINE BACK MOTION A lot of people have been asking on the earlier saddle post today about how much the horses back moves during exercise. There are a fair numb...er of papers now published on this but visuals are always good. 11.01.2022 Stage 3 restrictions for regional Victoria come into effect on Thursday. The restrictions will mirror the those which, until recently, applied to the Melbourne ...metro area. A detailed update will be available but in the meantime you can view how Stage 3 restrictions will affect your equestrian activities by reviewing the previous advice posted on 13th July (see below). Very briefly: REGIONAL VICTORIA Clubs may not conduct rallies, activities or events. Indoor arenas closed. Only owners may use the indoor arena. Outdoor sport facilities, including Club grounds, may remain open however, the Club is required to implement a booking system to ensure numbers meet venue limits. Riders may ride in groups of two with a maximum of 10 on the grounds unless 100m can be maintained between each pair. No sharing of equipment or facilities. Club rooms closed. Toilets can open. You can travel to care for your horse. Horse riding off property is a permitted activity for personal exercise and horse welfare purposes however, there is a limit of two people and an instructor if required for safety reasons. Stay local. If you can exercise your horse at home you should not take the horse off property for exercise. Instructors can visit your property to give lessons. INTERSTATE CLUBS Clubs can hold activities, rallies and unofficial competitions provided state government requirements are followed. South Australia restrictions NSW restrictions A maximum of 20 riders can be in attendance at a Club activity or event at any one time. Clubs holding rallies and activities must complete and follow a Club Safety Plan. Clubs wishing to hold an HRCAV event (including unofficial events) must forward a copy of their Event Safety Plan for approval with a copy of their event program. MELBOURNE METROPOLITAN AREA Melbourne has been under Stage 3 restrictions and moved to Stage 4 restrictions at 8pm Sunday 2nd August. Melbourne Metro area restrictions We appreciate that there are many questions and a full update will be posted once we have confirmation from the Victorian government on a number of points. In the meantime, please be advised that: Club grounds must be closed to members. We have been advised that you can travel to care for your horse if necessary, including exercise for welfare purposes. Do not ride off property at present. Await further advice. ON-LINE COMPETITIONS On-line competitions have been popular with our members, providing goals to work towards and respite from the day to day grind. We will continue to offer these competitions but, unfortunately, opportunity to participate will be limited due to the new restrictions. Please note that: Members in regional Victoria cannot travel a horse off property for the purpose of participating in on-line competitions (effective 6th August) In Melbourne Metro area, entry is open only to members who can ride their horse at their place of residence (effective 3rd August)
09.01.2022 HELMET TAGGING IN HRCAV The HRCAV is planning to introduce helmet tagging to ensure that helmets worn at all HRCAV events comply with current standards. It is e...nvisaged that Club Secretaries will be amongst the nominated officials given the authority to tag compliant helmets. This will involve checking the label against labels reproduced in the Manual. If the helmet is not fit for purpose, eg: clearly too large or clearly damaged, they will have the authority to decline to tag it. The proposed new rule is shown below. Please send any comments on the proposed wording and intent to [email protected] prior to 1st May. PROPOSED RULE 'Event rule 9.3.1 all helmets must be tagged to indicate that are fit for purpose and meet the standards required in HRCAV and/or Equestrian Victoria. HRCAV tags (green) or Equestrian Victoria tags (yellow) are accepted. HRCAV tagging is to is to be undertaken by a nominated official listed in Appendix ....’
06.01.2022 EXCITING ANNOUNCMENT On behalf of the Orbost Agricultural Society I am pleased to announce that we will be running a one off, Special Spring Horse Show on Sund...ay the 22nd of November for our regional Victorian show horse community! There has already been an enormous amount of work put in to making this happen, but time well spent to give us all something to look forward too. There will obviously be a number of new rule and restrictions in place and theses may possibly change between now and the show, so please read the whole program carefully and keep up to date with any changes on our Facebook page. Due to the current climate we have decided not to seek sponsorship, we have had Cameron Outdoor, Snowy River Lodge Motel and Sport Horse Saddlery offer sponsorship that has been greatly valued. If anyone is in a position to offer any sponsorship in any form, if you contact me ASAP I can put you/your company in to the program before it is posted tonight, any further sponsorship would be very much appreciated and would allow us to provide some prizes to our winners. This show will be EA affiliated so will be able to used as a qualification for Barastoc HOTY, however as we have had our annual show this year, and we are optimistic we will be able to hold our 2021 annual show, this event will not be able to be used as a main qualification for Royal shows. 03.01.2022 EDITED TO ADD FURTHER INFORMATION A COVID SAFE RETURN TO EQUESTRIAN ACTIVITIES Equestrian Victoria (EV), Pony Club Victoria (PCV) and the Horse Riding Clubs... Association of Victoria (HRCAV) are committed to ensuring the health and safety of our members and community. We continue to remain engaged with all levels of government and industry bodies around the COVID-19 situation, providing you with the latest information as it translates to our sporting landscape. Following Fridays announcement by the Prime Minister, Scott Morrison about the national 3-step recovery plan, and this mornings announcement by the Premier of Victoria, Daniel Andrews there is now a gradual easing of government restrictions that will allow the resumption of SOME equestrian activities. From 11.59pm tomorrow evening (Tuesday 12 May), outdoor recreational activities can be undertaken in groups of up to 10 participants, subject to social distancing and hygiene measures being implemented. This means members may now: - Ride off property - Travel horses locally and regionally including for training/coaching but no overnight stays - Participate in outdoor training/coaching activities with a maximum of 10 participants Note: i. Riders should check with venue as owners/managers who may have venue specific restrictions ii. Social distancing (1.5m) and good hygiene MUST be maintained iii. These allowances are for outdoor areas only no gatherings for recreational activities indoors are permitted iv. Groups can be no larger than 10 (plus the coaches and helpers required to run the activity). More than one group of 10 can be present on a venue at the same time, if the different groups are physically well separated on different parts of the venue. No other facilities except toilet facilities may be used. v. An indoor gathering refers to a gathering within a single enclosed area (i.e. an area, room or premises that is or are substantially enclosed by a roof and walls, regardless of whether the roof or walls or any part of them are permanent, temporary, open or closed). Members may continue to: - Have coaches, farriers, trainers, vets, and other equine professionals attend your property - Attend agistment centres to care for horses subject to venue owner/manager specific restrictions The approach to activities/training should focus on get in, train, get out, minimising unnecessary contact in stables, toilet facilities, and any communal areas. BE SAFE, CAUTIOUS & APPROPRIATE. The Premiers announcement is effective until 11.59pm 31 May, by which time we should have a more detailed plan that we can build upon to support the return to events and competitions here in Victoria, guiding our sport out of this crisis. We understand the desire from members to return to group activities and competitions as soon as possible. EV equally shares this desire and we look forward to further announcements by the Victoria government over the coming week(s). We will release a more detailed and a stepped plan once we have that information. The equine community is well positioned to move through the federal government and AIS frameworks. However, it is likely that modifications will be required to some of our current resources to mitigate additional risks related to COVID-19 based on government advice. We thank you for your continued support during this challenging period and encourage members to contact the EV, PCV or HRCAV offices (as appropriate) if we can be of any assistance with advice or support. Please note, that our office hours and days have not changed since our last announcement. Lets all continue to exercise caution we dont want to take a backward step just as we begin to move forward.
