24.01.2022 Calling all photographers... Its that time again the #lovegippsland 2021 calendar competition is now open for entries. This years theme Colours of Gippsland... is about capturing the colours of our region, whether man-made or natural. Taking the photographs may be a little more difficult this year due to coronavirus restrictions, but I am confident the standard will be as high as it has been in past years. The project helps to bring more visitors to Gippsland to support local business and is also a timely reminder for locals about the amazing opportunities that exist right here in our backyard. To enter, go to www.darrenchester.com.au and follow the link to upload your photo. Entries close on Thursday, October 15 at 5pm. Photographers are also encouraged to upload their photos to social media using the hashtag #lovegippsland. Good luck! #lovegippsland #myvalley

19.01.2022 There is much uncertainty with many in the Bairnsdale community around the pending move of Woolworths into the Kmart store announced late last week. I was made ...aware of this on Thursday night just gone (September 3) when I received a call at Parliament. It was pleasing to see Kmart management issue an immediate statement that it wants to remain part of the community and is exploring potential sites for relocation in Bairnsdale this week. Since Friday and over the weekend, I have been involved in discussions with the council, local real estate agents and potential landlords working on solutions. Kmart management arrives this week and we look forward to all working together to achieve a suitable relocation and save these jobs.

19.01.2022 Hi all, The good news is Step Three commences after midnight Wednesday this week. This information is for rural and regional areas only, not those in the metrop...olitan area. If you are having trouble accessing detail within the next 48 hours, please DO NOT put it in a comment below email the office on [email protected] if you are unable to find out yourself. The dot points below are what we do know and while I know there will be many more questions on specifics (much remains unknown until tomorrow), please keep an eye on the following websites for further details: Details around business openings: https://www.business.vic.gov.au/ More general restrictions (travel, camping regulations, community sport etc: https://www.vic.gov.au/third-step-coronavirus-road-to-recov While restrictions are being eased in country areas, enforcement on travelling will be increased. More vehicles will be checked and this will sometimes result in significant queues and delays for those travelling to and from Melbourne for medical, work, child custody or other reasons. Please take note of this and allow travel time. It is also anticipated fines will be increased for those who are in country areas or attempting to travel to country areas without a valid reason. Please take particular note of the second dot point below, as there is confusion in the community around this. Step Three from midnight Wednesday, this is what we know: * There will be no restrictions on leaving home. * Visitors allowed at private homes from one other household for the duration of Step Three (of up to 5 visiting people, known as your social bubble). You cannot have people from more than one different household visit your home for the period of Step Three. Once you nominate the visiting household and they visit, that cannot change and you are each others social bubble household, its reciprocal. For example, you cannot have people from one household visit and then another household three weeks later or one household visit your home and then you visit another household, you are each others social bubble as soon as that first visit takes place. So no gatherings in the home from different families, no sleepovers from different families, or different kids visiting their friends homes from week to week. . If you have a person or family coming to stay from another area for a weekend (eg a mate from Ballarat), they are your social bubble. They cannot stay and then you have another local household over in Step Three, nor can you visit another local household at any time in Step Three. You cannot have a household choose you and you choose a different household. * Accommodation / travel. Accommodation will be open to visitors from other areas in Step Three (no Melbourne tourists), with caps per the social bubble. More detail is to be provided on camping by the Government tomorrow. * Hospitality will open. Pubs, clubs, cafes, restaurants can have 10 people per indoor space (floor space permitting, one person per four square metres) with tables spaced and no more than 20 inside a premises (maximum two indoor spaces). What determines a suitable divide between spaces will be explained tomorrow so keep an eye on the website above. Outdoor dining can be up to 50 (space permitting, tables 1.5m apart). An establishment that can cater for all the above with the appropriate gathering and density limits can have 70 patrons at a time. A two hour limit exists for those sitting down for table service and businesses must have a COVID safe plan. * Public gatherings of up to 10 people outdoors will be allowed. (They can be from different families, social distancing rules apply) * All retail open, including hairdressing, beauty services and tattooists, with a face covering can be worn for the duration of service (this is a recent change). * Outdoor contact and non-contact sport for people aged 18 and younger. * Outdoor non-contact sport only for adults, with gathering and density limits. (While we await clarity on what sports fall under non-contact it is anticipated the likes of cricket, tennis, golf and bowls will be included with possibly some number restrictions for certain sports please watch the website above). * Outdoor skateparks open, outdoor fitness for groups of 10 people. (Detail is be forthcoming on gyms and indoor activity classes). * Weddings - allowed with up to 10 people (including the couple, two witnesses and celebrant). * Funerals - allowed with up to 20 people (infants under 12 months of age or people required to conduct the funeral not included in the limit). * Religion - outdoor religious gatherings for up to 10 people plus a faith leader, places of worship open for private worship for households or social bubbles, plus a faith leader. * Face coverings remain for the duration of Step Three. * Just to be clear, those living in Melbourne cannot come to this area on holidays and should not be booked into accommodation houses, nor should they be attending holiday homes unless for urgent maintenance that cannot wait. People not observing this should be reported to police. Lets make sure we stick to the rules and take the opportunity presented to us and get out and support our local businesses within the rules set down so they may survive.

17.01.2022 Let's take action by making our voices heard! Income support payments will be cut by another $100 a fortnight from 1 January, down to $51 a day just $11 a ...day more than the unliveable Newstart rate of $40 a day. Neighbourhood houses will always be there for their communities - no matter what - but it shouldn't be their responsibility to continually pick up the pieces left behind by governments which fail to fairly and adequately support their most vulnerable citizens. Australians overwhelmingly support Raise the Rate - we will continue to advocate until its done, for good. #RaiseTheRateforGood #StopTheXmasCut

15.01.2022 Heres our chance to complete the set... drought, fire, flood and a pandemic in the same 12 months! It looks like we will be having a wetter spring than usual a...nd that could mean flooding in parts of Gippsland. The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting a wet end to 2020 for the eastern part of the country, including Gippsland. October is predicted to be particularly wet with the very likely chance of above average rainfall. The BOM has also predicted a 70% chance of La Nia forming in the last quarter of 2020. The Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) index has been sitting in the negative for the last few weeks, which in combination with La Nia increases the likelihood of above average rainfall throughout spring. Lets just hope it arrives in moderation and helps our region, rather than hinders our recovery activities. Pix credit: Bureau of Meteorology #lovegippsland

15.01.2022 The new Lakes Entrance Jemmys Point Lookout (stage 1) is open! And with COVID travel restrictions easing and the school holidays starting we are expecting it t...o be well utilised. Mayor John White opened the lookout this afternoon with local MP Darren Chester on hand. Thanks to the contractors and community for their involvement from the initial design stages to completion. We look forward to seeing GLaWACs plans for the internal section to unfold. Enjoy the view ... we certainly did today! 14.01.2022 This map in todays Herald Sun graphically explains why parts of regional Victoria have earned the right to re-open more businesses with COVID-safe plans right ...now. There are vast areas of regional Victoria with zero or very few active cases but the ongoing harsh restrictions are destroying livelihoods and compromising the mental health of business owners and their staff, across the state. Its about getting the balance right and unfortunately, the pendulum has swung too far towards restrictions, with not enough understanding of the way small communities could operate safely to support local jobs and the mental health of the region. This week I met with representatives of the restaurant, catering, hospitality and hotel industries, as well as speaking to the owners of local pubs, coffee shops and restaurants. The message is clear. If we dont get more businesses open soon with COVID-safe plans, they will not reopen at all. They will not be able to retain staff who are looking to move to destinations where work is available and without cashflow, they cant pay the other fixed costs like insurance, rent, energy bills and business loans. As I said earlier in the week, no-one is talking about open slather. They want a responsible re-opening with all the rules around hand sanitisers, social distancing, face coverings where appropriate and customer limits for sit down dining but businesses cant wait for mythical targets which lump Gippsland into the same category as Bendigo, Ballarat and Geelong. Its complete rubbish to claim that its too hard and we cant have different rules in different regions. All it would take is a requirement that people attending a local pub for a sit down meal, demonstrate with photo ID that they live locally. If the owners of the establishment have any doubts, they have the right to refuse entry. Keep in mind, in most of the communities with low case numbers, the local business owners know their customers by name and any visitor breaking the Melbourne lockdown would be refused service. This putting locals first approach to restore more local economic activity would sustain locals jobs and improve the mental wellbeing of our community. Its an important step to getting us back to where we want to be in the coming months and recognises we are going to have to live with the virus until a vaccination is developed. Please dont misinterpret what Im saying. Im not underestimating the threat of the coronavirus and if a local breakout occurs, we would need to take the actions weve seen in NSW with deep cleaning, contact tracing and lockdowns as required. But the restrictions we are living with right now in areas with low case numbers are doing more unnecessary damage every day to our regional communities, and its time a risk-based approach was used to allow more businesses in the safer areas do reopen for local trade. What do you think? #lovegippsland

13.01.2022 Health warning on mosquitoes and Ross River virus Status: Active Date issued: 26 November 2020 Issued by: Dr Annaliese van Diemen, Deputy Chief Health Officer (...Communicable Disease) Issued to: Health professionals and the Victorian community Key messages Residents and visitors to Victoria are being warned to protect themselves against mosquito-borne diseases such as Ross River virus and Barmah Forest virus. Ross River virus has been detected in mosquitoes in the Gippsland Lakes area around Ninety Mile Beach. These viruses can cause symptoms including joint pain and stiffness, headache, fever, rash and fatigue. The best protection from these diseases is to avoid mosquito bites - protective measures include regularly using mosquito repellent containing picaridin or DEET on all exposed skin, wearing long, loose fitting clothing when outside, and ensuring accommodation, including tents, are properly fitted with mosquito nettings or screens. Doctors should consider the possibility of mosquito-borne disease in patients presenting with a compatible illness, especially after travel to rural or regional Victoria. A blood test early in the illness can indicate potential acute infection and should be repeated two weeks later for confirmation. A range of information relating to protecting against mosquito bites is available on the Beat the Bite campaign page on the Better Health Channel. 13.01.2022 We are aware of some misinformation being circulated about the origins of 2 COVID-19 cases in East Gippsland. The misinformation details that 1 case is linked ...to the Bairnsdale Aquatic and Recreation Centre and 1 to the Lakes Entrance Aquadome. Both these facilities have been closed since 5 August, well in advance of these two cases being confirmed yesterday. DHHS has not provided Council advice that suggests a link between our facilities and a positive case. We encourage everyone to use a trusted source for your COVID-19 updates: www.dhhs.vic.gov.au

06.01.2022 Please be aware we are so busy we dont always check messages

05.01.2022 Hi all Here is an update on the changes that come into place tonight, the forecast for the immediate future and details on new business supports. Firstly, it is... important to note we are moving from stages to steps, which I am aware has been some cause for confusion, but it is important to read the following in this context. While nothing was mentioned specifically today on face coverings, it has been previously they will be required to be worn ongoing as part of easing of restrictions. If you have any specific questions, please send an email to [email protected] Tonight in regional Victoria we move from Stage Three restrictions to Step Two and all going well to Step Three later this week. Step Two from tonight means: * Up to five people able to gather together in outdoor public places from a maximum of two households for exercise or recreation (note outside only). * Outdoor pools and playgrounds will open. * Religious services can be conducted outside with a maximum of five people, plus a faith leader. Step Three However, with numbers low, regional Victoria is on the verge or moving to Step Three within days (without any breakouts, likely before the end of the week). While more detail will be released when announced, here is what we know about Step Three: * There will be no restrictions on leaving home. * Public gatherings of up to 10 people outdoors will be allowed. * Visitors allowed at home from one other household (of up to 5 people). * Hospitality will open for predominately outdoor seated service only (more detail will be sought here around the term predominantly and whether any sit down dining will be allowed, as this is not clear at present). * All retail open, including hairdressing and beauty services where a face covering can be worn for the duration of service (this is a recent change). * Outdoor contact and non-contact sport for people aged 18 and younger. * Outdoor non-contact sport only for adults, with gathering and density limits. Hopefully this includes competition cricket, bowls, tenis, golf etc. (we await the detail). * Outdoor skateparks open, outdoor fitness for groups of 10 people. * Travel within Victoria - allowed across all areas also in Step Three (no unnecessary travel to areas with higher restrictions eg Melbourne). * Entertainment - outdoor venues and events open, subject to pre-approved plans. * Accommodation open to visitors from other areas in Step Three, with caps per the social bubble. Metropolitan area From 11.59pm Melbourne moves from Stage Four to Step One, which has only slight changes, those being: * Social bubbles begin, allowing those living alone or single parents to have one other person in their home. * Exercise is extended to two hours split over a maximum of two sessions, and you will be able to use that time outside for social interaction with one other person or the members of your household. * Playgrounds and outdoor fitness equipment reopen, and the curfew will begin at 9pm rather than 8pm. Business support While more detail will be released in the coming days, here is the basis of the latest business supports: * Businesses with payrolls up to $10 million will receive grants of $10,000, $15,000 or $20,000 depending on size (there will be a qualification criteria). * A Licenced Venue Fund will be established with grants of between $10,000 and $30,000 for licenced venues of all shapes and sizes. Liquor license fees will be waived for 2021. * The State Government has recognised sole trader support has been lacking and will make announcements of supports for this sector this week (details not known yet). Additional details about support for businesses will be available at www.business.vic.gov.au so please keep your eye on this site.

02.01.2022 We are all guilty this time of year of hyper focusing on numbers, dollars, dates and times. Even we get caught up in how many orders are left to fill, how many... volunteers, days, money and units of stock this will take.... but then one story brings it all back into focus. Today we received a call from a foster carer via a partner agency who had come into care of a 16 year old young woman. Her story far too familiar to mine. Her little belongings being stored in garbage bags and left with nothing. All she wanted was a makeup brush, so polite and angelic in asking so. For each of us it’s different. What we each need to feel our best version of ourselves, the items in our bathroom that allow us to connect and contribute to the world around us. What’s your product you simply couldn’t live without? It’s worth pondering in a quiet moment. After connecting quickly with this angel and some much appreciated puppy love we filled up 2 big bags of products all teenagers should have. Hair and skin care, dental products, sanitary and makeup. All age appropriate and all made possible by your support. She left poo hq literally skipping with joy after telling us this was a moment she’ll never forget and the best one she’s had all year. It’s one story.... but forget the numbers because everyone counts.
