25.01.2022 RABBIT VACCINATIONS In Australia, rabbit vaccines are available for Calicivirus, which causes rabbit viral haemorrhagic disease. Until recently, pet rabbits were required to be vaccinated once a year to maintain immunity from the disease. However in an attempt to control the wild rabbit population, the Australian government now regularly releases a new strain of Calicivirus (RHDV1) into the environment. This poses an additional risk to our pet rabbits, as the disease does ...not discriminate between wild rabbits and pet rabbits. All RHDV strains can spread easily from infected rabbits in droppings, urine, secretions from the eyes and nose, and at mating. Spread can also occur from contaminated objects such as food, clothing, cages, equipment, insects (especially flies), birds and rodents. The virus can survive in the environment for three and a half months over hotter periods but up to seven and a half months in moderate temperatures. Keep your bunny safe: Vaccinate your rabbit at 10-12 weeks of age, and again with a second booster a month later. Thereafter 6 monthly boosters are given. A 6 monthly booster provides the best protection against both viruses. Cover your rabbit hutch with netting to minimise insect bites. Wash your hands thoroughly before and after handling your bunny, especially if you have been in contact with other rabbits. If you have any questions we're here to help. Call us on 9300 2727 or book online. #lakesidevet #rabbits #rabbitvaccinations #calicivirus

24.01.2022 CATURDAY - BREED SPOTLIGHT Bengal Cat Bengal cats resemble a wild cat in appearance. They have a large, triangular shaped head with a thick neck, large feet and a thick tail. ... They are a hybrid of the Asian Leopard cat and Domestic Tabby cat, and the spots on the coat are not lined up in rows, but appear randomly placed. The coat of the Bengal is short and may even feel a little rough naturally. It is easy to care for and does not mat. They have a very sweet and loving personality, becoming very attached their people. Bengals are extremely athletic and so they need to run, jump and play, and get plenty of exercise. 20.01.2022 Here are our Top 5 tips for keeping your pets safe this festive season. 1. Keep your dog away from foods such as chocolate, avocados, macadamias, onions, and nuts and raisins. They are toxic for dogs and can cause severe illness. Also avoid overfeeding - especially fatty foods which can cause gastrointestinal upsets or pancreatitis. 2. Place Christmas lights and electrical cords out of reach of curious kittens and pups. Electrical cords can look like a tasty chew toy to ma...ny pets! 3. Secure your pet in a safe and quiet area away from fireworks, loud parties and strangers. Thunder jackets or pheromone diffusers such as Feliway or Adaptil may assist with keeping your pet calm around loud noises. You may wish to consider boarding your pet elsewhere overnight. In cases of severe anxiety, please consult with our vets about desensitisation techniques or possibly medications. 4. While we’re out partying and visiting friends and relatives, our pets can suffer from separation anxiety and boredom, which can also lead to destructive habits. Make sure that your pets have free access to food, water and shelter while you are gone. Provide them with chew toys and activities to keep them mentally stimulated, and consider a pet-sitting service to check on them and take your dog out for a walk. 5. Keep your pets safe around the pool safety by ensuring that fences are pet-proof. Cover gaps and check regularly for holes or tunnel digging. Keep furniture away from the fence to prevent your dog from jumping over. Remove any tarps or nets if you are going out. We hope these tips help to keep your furbabies safe and happy this Christmas and New Year! #lakesidevet #christmas #petsafety #catsafety #dogsafety #pethealth

19.01.2022 FUN FACT FRIDAY Do cats always land on their feet? The height of the cat’s fall has a large part to play in if cats always land on their feet. A study done in 1987 by the New York City Animal Medical Centre analysed vet records of cats that had fallen from multi-storey buildings and found some incredible statistics. Most of them landed on concrete, and yet 90% of all the cats studied survived the fall, and only 37% of those required emergency care.... But it was the height of the fall that most affected the outcome. Cats who fell from between 7 and 32 stories suffered less injuries, while those who fell between 2 and 6 stories sustained more injuries. Amazingly, a cat that fell a whopping 32 stories and landed on concrete was released after 48 hours with only a chipped tooth and a minor lung puncture. Scientists think that the higher the fall, the more time cats have to be able to right themselves. It’s also believed that they reach a maximum velocity of around 60mph, which is much slower than humans at about 120mph. Once they reach this stage they begin to relax and stretch their legs out much like how a flying squirrel does which expands their body size and creates air resistance. It’s almost like cats can turn themselves into little parachutes, which increases drag resistance! #lakesidevet #lakesidevetcentre #cats #perthcats #funfactfriday

17.01.2022 This month we worked with surgeons Drs. Rob Harris and Ewen Blaikie on some challenging patients. Both offer a high-quality mobile service allowing us to deliver an integrated, in-house service for complex orthopedic and ophthalmological surgical cases. This means for select cases we no longer need to refer you to see a separate specialist, saving you time and money as well as knowing that your pet will be in a familiar setting for any care they need. Dr. Ewen performed multi...ple "TPLO" knee reconstructions and opened up the airways of a Pug struggling to breathe, while Dr. Rob performed life-changing cataract removal surgery. Our team of vets and nurses always enjoy working with these surgeons as they bring a wealth of knowledge, giving us the opportunity to sharpen our skills and learn new techniques. #lakesidevet #petsurgery #vetspecialists #petsofjoondalup #tplosurgery
16.01.2022 Feline Herpesvirus Conjunctivitis Feline herpesvirus conjunctivitis is caused by the highly infectious feline herpesvirus (FHV-1) and is extremely common in cats. Most cats are exposed as kittens and they may even be infected by the mother cat at birth.... During the initial infection, the kitten may show signs of an upper respiratory infection including sneezing, nasal discharge, and a decreased appetite. Signs evident in the eyes include discharge, swelling, and squinting. The virus cannot be transferred to you, other family members, or dogs, however other cats are susceptible. Treatment usually includes an antiviral drop or ointment, and most kittens are able to recover from this type of infection within 1-2 weeks. Please contact us immediately if you notice any of these signs in your cat. #lakesidevet #cats #catseyes #cathealth #catsofjoondalup

13.01.2022 Remembrance Day 2020 The Australian Army Veterinary Corps was formed in 1909 to care for horses in the military. Veterinarians treated animals with wounds and injuries, and inoculated them against dangerous diseases if vaccines were available. They also looked after their teeth. Horses were often injured when they stepped on nails. The nail injury was called a 'PUN', which stood for 'picked-up nail'. Nails became a common source of lameness because they were left in the ash...es of burned packing boxes, which were raked out onto roadways on the Western Front. 13.01.2022 Valentine's Day is often sweet occasion, with many of us celebrating the day of love with chocolates and lollies and other sugary treats. However foods containing chocolate or xylitol can be dangerous and even potentially fatal for our pets. Chocolate Chocolate is toxic to both dogs and cats and can result in significant illness. Chocolate is toxic because it contains a chemical called theobromine, as well as caffeine. Theobromine is the predominant toxin in chocolate an...d is very similar to caffeine. Dogs and cats cannot metabolise theobromine and caffeine as well as people can, and this makes them more sensitive to the chemicals’ effects. Clinical signs of chocolate poisoning include: Vomiting and diarrhea Increased thirst Panting or restlessness Excessive urination Racing heart rate Xylitol Xylitol is a sweetener that is most commonly found in food products but can be found in other consumer goods such as medications, sunscreen, makeup and toothpaste. Xylitol consumption can be dangerous for your dog, although it does not cause serious problems in cats or ferrets. In dogs, it causes low blood sugar and liver injury. Signs of low blood sugar include: Weakness Unsteadiness Shaking Signs of liver injury may include: Decrease in appetite Lethargy Yellowing of the skin Vomiting and diarrhea Please store chocolates, lollies and other products containing xylitol safely away from curious pets. If you suspect that your pet has ingested chocolate or xylitol please call us immediately on 9300 2727. #lakesidevet #lakesidevetcentre #valentinesday #chocolatetoxicity #xylitol

05.01.2022 DOG THEFT PRECAUTION Dogs tied up outside shops are easy pickings for dog thieves. Dogs are routinely stolen and re-sold to unsuspecting families, or used for breeding or in dogfighting rings.... Additionally, dogs left alone outside can become stressed with strangers approaching them for a pat, or overheated in warmer weather. You may only be popping into the shops for a minute, but it's not worth the heartbreak of losing your beloved pet. Please consider leaving your dog at home when you visit the shops. #lakesidevet #dogtheft #dogsafety #dogsofjoondalup

04.01.2022 Stuffed toys are cute but boy do our pets love them! The things that are usually most attractive to dogs are often the very things that are the most dangerous. Follow our tips to keep your dog safe when playing with stuffed toys: Make sure your teddy is placed in a safe place and doesn't have any small parts like plastic ears or noses that your pet may swallow. Avoid or alter any toys that aren't "dog-proof" by removing ribbons, strings, eyes or other parts that could be... chewed off and ingested. Discard toys when they start to break into pieces or are torn. Check labels on stuffed toys to see that they are labelled as safe for children under three years of age and that they don't contain any dangerous fillings. Problem fillings include nutshells and polystyrene beads, but even "safe" stuffings aren't truly digestible. Remember that soft toys are not indestructible, but some are sturdier than others. Soft toys should be machine washable. Supervise your dog at all times when they are playing with stuffed toys. Please share. Thank you! #lakesidevet #dogtoys #stuffedtoys #toysafety

02.01.2022 STORM PHOBIA With two cyclones currently brewing up north, Perth is forecast for some unpredictable weather this weekend. Thunderstorms can be very stressful for pets, with responses ranging from mild discomfort to severe anxiety.... Some methods for helping to calm your pet include: Bringing your dog indoors during the storm Providing background noise (television, radio, fan, or white noise) Offering a safe place, such as a bathtub, laundry basket, or open closet Some dogs respond well to the various capes and wraps such as the Thundershirt. Pheromone products such as Adaptil for dogs and Feliway for cats may help to provide reassurance and comfort. If you find that your pet is not responding to these methods please contact us for advice. Severe responses may require medication and/or densitisation and counter-conditioning. #lakesidevet #thunderstorms #thunderstormphobia
