23.01.2022 There had been some speculation that Lake Tyers is about to open. People have recorded the ocean swell running lover the sandbar into the lake. Looking down on the bar, it looks breachable. However the views here from #2 and the footpath to the beach give a better view on how high the lake must rise to begin running out. To get a good opening that lasts 3-4 months it has to be a big one, in fact push out a whole huge slug of saturated sand into the ocean. In previous years this has caused a plume of debris hundreds of metres out from the shore. People have been catching excellent fish lately so the lake is healthy. The rain's biggest contribution to the area is not opening the lake, but reducing the bush fire danger next summer. It is wonderful to see some decent East Coast Lows drenching our bush and rainforest gullies.

22.01.2022 Locals around here take a great interest in the weather, as it governs what chances we have of a potentially very dry bush around us. Last year LTB was spared the direct impact of the bush fires that raged across East Gippsland. On a visit recently to Mallacoota, which did feel the terror of the fires, it was surprising to see that quite a lot of species, like Eucalypts, coppice from under the bark. Banksia and Melaleuca were also observed re-sprouting on badly burnt trunks. Their fighting spirit was heartening amid the devastation. This Casuarina that has been lopped in Lakes Entrance is also showing it can do it too. The flowering Xanthorea spikes in Mallacoota were amazing. This Casuarina comically now looks like one too.

22.01.2022 50mm of rain in the last 12 days. Hardly any increase in the level so far. Hopefully Buchan and surrounds (our catchment area) will have got similar and Boggy Creek will add to it over the next week or so. We need 50-60cm before a breakout.

16.01.2022 Just a post on lake level, and the Tav is open!!

14.01.2022 Blue Nos2 Level reading 1.5m, 2.2m needed to break out. Plenty of boat trailers, and lake is very tempting. Third photo was 5 months ago.

13.01.2022 Things are a buzzing at LTB today.
