23.01.2022 Tongue-tie (ankyloglossia) is a condition present at birth that restricts the tongue's range of motion. A tongue-tie is an unusually short, thick or tight band of tissue that tethers the bottom of the tongue's tip to the floor of the mouth, so it may interfere with breast-feeding. Someone who has a tongue-tie might also have difficulty sticking out his or her tongue, and may also have a problem eating, speaking and swallowing. 11.01.2022 Low tongue posture can lead to health issues throughout the body. The tongue is an organ that guides the digestive process, and is critical for both neural sign...als in the brain. When you swallow incorrectly, it deforms the dental arch. In kids we can see ‘open bites’ or high arched palates that indicate the tongue isn’t making proper connection to the roof of the mouth. Mouth breathing (even at night), an incorrect tongue resting posture, or an improper swallowing pattern can all contribute to the vagus nerve not being correctly stimulated. The vagus nerve is one of the primary parasympathetic cranial nerves and drives the digestive system. Correct swallowing activates rest and digest messages that must begin in the mouth. During these times, the glands relax and release saliva for digestion, and the body sends hormonal signals reading the body to absorb. These are the activities that happen when the body is resting and unstressed, particularly after we eat and when we sleep. The sympathetic nervous system on the other hand stimulates the activities that are connected to the fight-or-flight response. When we breathe through the nose, have the tongue in the roof of the mouth, and swallow correctly, the vagus nerve is being stimulated. But when we don’t, it can lead to low vagus nerve stimulation. This can contribute to the factors that are keeping us stuck in fight-or-flight, or actually put us directly in that state. If you don’t swallow properly you end up living in a permanent state of stress. This in turn can affect our digestion because after all, digestion isn’t a priority when you’re running for your life. Again, running or fighting is what this whole stress response system is designed for. How to start strengthening and reconnecting the tongue to the roof of the mouth: ‘Table Top exercises’ are where you hold the entire surface of the tongue to the roof of the mouth. Suction the tongue up and right to the back of the throat and hold the posture here. Hold for 20 seconds and rest and repeat 5 times. It feels strange, but this is how the tongue should guide the swallow response. Do you struggle with breathing?

10.01.2022 The muscles that surround and support the jaw are some of the strongest muscles in the human body! And just like any other muscle in the human body, they benefit from massage and release.

10.01.2022 The volume of air passing through the nose and nasopharynx is limited by its volume. Continuous airflow through the nose during breathing induces a constant sti...mulus for the growth of maxilla and for lowering of the roof of the mouth. Statistically significant differences ARE found between patients with airway problems and control groups. Problems with the shape of the upper jaw include: shorter maxillary length proclined maxillary incisors (tipping out) thicker and longer soft palate narrower maxillary arch higher palate Causes of nasal obstruction which may increase risk of mouth breathing may include swollen chronic adenoids and tonsils, chronic allergic rhinitis, nasal traumas, congenital nasal deformities, foreign bodies, polyps, and tumors. Nasal breathing allows proper growth and development of the face and jaw complex. The consequences can be seen in dental formation and breathing related diseases. Patients with airway obstruction are shown to have molar teeth that sit slightly downward and forward. Smaller airways increase the pressure in the airway, and smaller pharyngeal walls are reduced in people with sleep apnea. Mouth-breathing individuals have been classically described as narrow, V-shaped maxillary arch, a high palatal vault, proclined upper incisors and a Class II occlusal relationship (lower teeth back behind upper teeth when biting). So, to support the width of your upper jaw, and keep the respiratory immune system functioning properly, you need to breathe through the nose. For those with challenges such as airway inflammation, or narrow palates, it may be worth investigating if a health professional can help you to breathe better. However, in the end, no surgery can teach you to breathe through your nose, it can help, but the habit is on you. Personally I’ve worked on preventing mouth breathing by making sure the tongue is sealed to the mouth when I’m working or concentrating. The other way to practice nasal breathing is to try to exercise with nasal breath only. It will feel difficult but the tolerance of your brain stem to slower nasal breathing, will help create tolerance nasal breathing during sleep. Do you have trouble breathing through your nose?

07.01.2022 We simply forget how important posture is for our health. There are a number of symptoms of bad posture including Neck and back pain... Jaw pain or TMJ Headaches/migrains Limb numbness Mouth breathing Poor sleep Teeth grinding Snoring Why does our body suffer so much in bad posture? It’s estimated 90% of the brain's activity is used to balance your body within the gravitational field of earth. If your body is mechanically distorted, it will affect the other 10% of the brain's activity, which controls all the other body functions such as breathing, digestion and all of the endocrine hormones that control each organ in the body. Yes, posture is that important! Remember your brain works via conduction of energy. If the body framework (bone structure and spine) is in an imbalanced or misaligned it can impede or block the electrical and chemical transmissions of the nervous system, which controls all of your body's functions. This interference to the nervous system can cause or contribute to all kinds of symptoms of feeling ‘off’ or sick. Many people try to correct their posture through body work, yet they often neglect the mouth. You may not know it, how your bite comes together is hugely impactful on the spine. The way your teeth ‘meet’ or bite is the occlusion. One of the main relationships that affect the this relationship, is the meeting Posture is dictated by the existing occlusion, especially the relation between the maxillary and mandibular permanent first molars. At the age of 67 years first molar tooth appears to give that stability to the cervical spine. First molars are the teeth with biggest surface area, and they can withstand maximum biting force. Optimal height and relationship ensures that cervical spine remains in most neutral position. In this position head generates about 4.55 k of force on the spine, which it can withstand with ease and with least amount of energy expenditure. However, the correct teeth position is dictated not by how you jam your teeth together, it’s how you posture when they are apart. Practicing correct posture at rest can help slightly move teeth in the lower and upper arch to slightly correct alignment. A good example is if you can make sure to breathe through the nose at night by sealing the lips, you will notice in a few months that teeth begin to shift or straighten slightly. The correct oral posture can help align other areas of the body and should be trained support the mouth and airway. Correct posture: Lips closed and facial muscles relaxed Tongue sealed completely to the roof of the mouth (including soft palate) Teeth slightly apart Head slightly tilted forward. Breathing quietly through the nose. Have you noticed forward head posture?

07.01.2022 Did you know low tongue posture can cause and ‘open-bite?’ The tongue is one of the most undervalued muscles in the body. Made up of groups of muscles and like ...the heart it is always working. It helps in the mixing process of foods. It binds and contorts itself to form letters. The tongue contains linguinal tonsils that filter out germs. Even when a person sleeps, the tongue is constantly pushing saliva down the throat. The tongue is so strong, improper use of the tongue deforms the dental arch. Open bites, as pictured above are a product of a ‘tongue-thrust’ swallow. The tongue should press up to the palate and seal right to the back of the throat. When this happens the roof of the mouth is wide, and the teeth are proper proportion. Where is your tongue usually situated? Is it pressing against your front teeth or lying passively on the floor of your mouth? While monitoring your tongue’s position, also take note of your breathing. Are your lips frequently open? If so, you’re probably breathing through your mouth, and this is often a sign of poor tongue posture. Remember to keep an eye out for any other symptoms like teeth grinding, which potentially causes headaches, neck pain, and jaw issues. It’s often due to using the chewing muscles to posture the jaw instead of the tongue! Begin by identifying the correct spot on the roof of your mouth where the tip of your tongue should make contact. It’s located just behind the upper front teeth. Once you’ve found it, practice touching this spot several times with the tip of your tongue. Next, suction your tongue onto the roof of your mouth, smile, and then pop it off again. You should hear the sharp snap of your tongue as it releases. Try not to move your jaw during this exercise. Lastly, raise your tongue to the roof of your mouth and suction it against your hard palate. Hold in place for five seconds, then release. Repeat several times. Breath deeply into the belly with the tongue firmly against the mouth. Feel the extra space behind your tongue that is due to the tongue muscles opening the airway in the neck. Are you mindful of your tongue posture?

03.01.2022 Increased stress and poor sleep patterns among the Millennial generation is resulting in an increase in TMJ problems, with dentists seeing an increase in TMJ disorder treatment. Read more in the article below.

03.01.2022 Teeth grinding is a common symptom underlying poor sleep, jaw pain, neck pain, and back pain. If you are in pain, you cannot thrive, and you may be deforming yo...ur posture. We often don’t realize that the skeletal system is balanced via the jaw. The TMJ is the connection between the jaw joints (hinge of the upper and lower jaw). Alignment of the teeth affects how this joint swings and moves, the way you use the muscles on these joints, and the way you breathe. I see many patients that have difficulty opening or holding the jaw open. The masseter muscle is the huge band that controls how the lower jaw moves up and down. Your masseter muscles creates enormous tension in your jaw joints, a byproduct of its crushing powers to chew food and can generate hundreds of pounds of force. There is a direct connection between the TMJ muscles, neck muscles and posture. There is: A relationship between TMJ and neck extensor/flexor muscles. So, methods to reduce neck pain, especially specific neck exercises are important when seeking relief from jaw pain. An association between the neck and jaw indicates, treatment needs to focus on both areas because the improvement of one could have an influence on the other. 83% of patients with confirmed joint and/or muscular TMJ disorders presented with Forward Head Posture. If you suffer from teeth grinding, jaw disharmony or neck and back pain try this exercise: How to release the masseter muscle (pictured above) A self masseter muscle release can be performed like so: 1) Apply finger pressure high on the master muscle, just below the cheek bone 2) Slowly open your jaw and hold the pressure 3) As you open slowly drag your fingers down dragging down through the muscle 4) Open as far as you can go and run the finger to the margin of the lower jaw Do you get headaches or grind your teeth? How did this exercise feel for you?

02.01.2022 Navy SEALS use box breathing to stay calm and improve their concentration in extremely tense situations. *correction: image should read exhale through the nose...* Breathing is your gear stick to put your engine into the appropriate gear. Slow, stable breathing calms the heart, blood pressure, and helps you to think clearly. When you’re stressed so much so that it causes a fight or flight response breathing can go wrong. The sympathetic nervous system activates rapid breathing, which in turn can lead to a panic attack. But breathing can be a mindful method for reducing stress. A technique called diaphragmatic breathing deep, abdominal breathing paired with paced respiration has been shown to ignite positive mental and physiological outcomes. A 2011 study found that just one day of breathing exercise relieved the emotional exhaustion and depersonalization induced by job burnout. How to box breath: Start by relaxing your whole body and be seated if possible. Sit upright, and then slowly exhale, getting all the oxygen out of your lungs. Really focus on this and be conscious of what you’re doing. Inhale slowly and deeply through your nose to the count of four, very slowly in your head. Feel the coolness of the air you’re breathing in and the way it fills your lungs, one section at a time until they are completely full. Hold your breath for another slow count of four. Exhale through your nose for the same slow count of four, expelling the air from your lungs and abdomen. Be conscious of the feeling of the air leaving your lungs, how the coolness has become warmth. Then hold your breath for another 4 counts and repeat the whole process again If you’re having trouble concentrating, you can set an intention, or invite a neutral or positive image to focus on during your breathing practice. If the image of a square works for you, you can imagine your breath and the pauses/holds in between the breath moving around the image of the square. Use the diagram to calm your nervous system with box breathing. Try a 3 minute exercise. How did it make you feel

02.01.2022 Teeth teach us the most powerful strategies for better health. If you have dental issues, you need to read this post to better understand sunlight. Your skeleta...l system is the foundations of your body, including your immune system. When we follow how nature makes a strong human skeletal system, it shows us how important sunlight is. Our bodies are batteries that use the charge from sunlight and convert this energy into the mineralised crystal that are teeth and bones. 1) Sunlight converts cholesterol in your skin. We’ve been taught cholesterol is bad, well cholesterol is VITAL. Why? We need it to make ALL HORMONES (including Vitamin D), for nerve transmission and repair, immune system function and it composes 25% of the brain 2) Vitamin D makes you strong and IMMUNE. Sunlight triggers the body to make its own vitamin D, which is crucial not only for strong bones and healthy teeth, but for keeping the immune system healthy too. Studies have shown, for example, that exposing the body to sunlight or even ultraviolet light from an artificial source increases the number of white blood cells or lymphocytes. These are the body’s primary defence against the onslaught of an infection and are an important part of your immune response to the organisms that cause illness. 3) Vitamin D works with vitamin A, and other fat soluble vitamins to assimilate hydroxyapatite crystals. The minerals that collect into your bone is a symphony conducted by light to create one of the strongest biological structures on earth. 4) Low vitamin D increases your risk of bone and dental disease Vitamin D deficiency is known to underlie osteoarthritis. However it’s lesser known that vitamin d deficiency is found in both tooth decay and gum disease. 5) Sunlight stimulates nitric oxide production Nitric oxide is one of the super molecules in the body. One of its lesser known functions is to solidify bone formation. NO production decreases osteoclast formation that breaks down skeletal bone structure. 6) Sunlight sparks the circadian rhythm of bone One of the most amazing benefits of sun is that if you view morning sun, it will prime the release of melatonin from your brain twelve hours later. Isn’t that unbelievable? You probably don’t know it, but melatonin is a key endocrine hormone for bone and skeletal health. When you sleep your body floods itself with melatonin that sends hormonal signals for bone to mineralize. If you think about it, the best time to fortify your bones is during sleep, and that’s what melatonin does. Studies have shown that melatonin may increase the bone mass density of the femoral neck and lumbar spine in perimenopausal and postmenopausal women. After morning sunlight, you’re receiving the benefits 12 hours later of stronger bones and teeth! Here are the three ways to receive the benefits of sunlight: Exposure: get out at all parts of the day, including sunrise, to get the full spectrum of UV messages to the brain and through the skin Food: Fatty animal foods hold fat-soluble vitamins that carry the precious sunlight to our liver to be converted through the body. Supplement: A lesser form but can help combat the epidemic of sunlight deficiency and poor food choices alongside natural sunlight exposure. Do you have sunlight deficiency?
