24.01.2022 Our Mint plant has been growing so lusciously in Lakshmi garden! Mint is called Pudina in Sanskrit. It is famous for its fragrance - the aromatic menthol wakes up the senses and decongests the orifices of the head. It is also calming and relaxing for the digestive system. There are many varieties, spearmint and peppermint being two of the most common. It’s Ayurvedic actions are:... Deepana/ promotes Agni (digestive fire). Anulomana / promotes the downward flow of Vata. Shiro Virechana / clears the head. It has a balancing effect on all the three doshas, it is a cooling herb, with a katu (heating) vipaka (post digestive taste). Mint and some of its benefits: 1. Aids digestion, reduces gas, indigestion and irritable bowel. 2. Improves oral health by reducing harmful bacterial growth in the mouth. 3. Decongestant, great to use for steam inhalation. 4. Treatment for cough cold and throat irritation. 5. Cooling effect for your skin, useful for insect bites anti-inflammatory. How can you use Mint leaves: 1. Make a mint tea add the leaves to boiling water and steep for 5-10 minutes. 2. Add it to your room temperature drinking water (best to leave it overnight). 3. Use mint infused water as a mist for your skin (fill it in a spray bottle and keep in the fridge). 4. Use to gargle and rinse your mouth. At Lakshmi shop we have fresh mint for you, mint tea, toothpaste, mouth wash, essential oils and more. Mint is also one of the ingredients in our Pitta Churna for cooking! 23.01.2022 Over the past week we have been preparing Pinda Thailam at Lakshmi Ayurveda. This oil is primarily used in Gout, also called Vatarakta in Ayurvedic classical texts. The ingredients included in our Pinda Thailam are manjistha, sariva, beeswax, water and sesame oil. One other herb called Sarjarasa is traditionally used. Pinda Thailam is great for treating pain and swelling, redness, heat and burning sensations. Warm and apply the oil as directed by your practitioner.... The video explains the process of preparing the thailam. We first prepare a kalka by mixing the herbs with water to make a paste. The sesame oil is added to water in addition to the kalka. This boils for hours to infuse the qualities of the herbs into the oil and remove excess water. Once the kalka reaches Madhyama paka, the oil is filtered and then poured over the beeswax. Madhyama paka is reached when the herbs can be rolled into a cylindrical shape evenly, as shown in the video. Its such a joy preparing our own thailam here at the clinic and we are pleased with how it turned out! If you think this oil would be suitable for you, you’re welcome to email us at [email protected] to book in for a massage treatment with Pinda Thailam. 22.01.2022 Panchakola. We enjoy teaching our students more about classical Ayurvedic herbs and formulations. Today we are looking into Panchakola, an Ayurvedic formulation great for improving digestive function. Today we had our students find the reference for Panchakola from the Ashtanga Hridayam. You can find this in the Ashtanga Hridayam Sutrasthana Chapter 6: 167.... Panchakola includes five (called Pancha in Sanskrit) herbs including Pippali, Pippalimula, Cavya, Citraka, Nagara. This formulation is useful in treating abdominal tutors, disease of the spleen, enlargement of the abdomen, distension and colic, and is best to improve hunger and digestion. Further information about the ingredients is below. Nagara is another name for dried ginger. The qualities of Nagara help in supporting digestive issues. It helps to relieve constipation, improve digestion and mitigate Kapha and Vata dosha. In the Sutrasthana verse prior to this one, Chitraka is described as having the fire to digest foods and assist in treating skin diseases, haemorrhoids and even worms/parasites. Pippalimula is the root of pippali. Combining these herbs assists in correcting the Agni, digestive fire especially for those experiencing mandagni, slow and weak digestion. Cavya has qualities similar to black pepper in its digestive promotion. If you are interested in learning more about Ayurvedic herbs, Karin offers mentoring sessions tailored to your interests. You are welcome to email us at [email protected] or message us directly. 22.01.2022 We are preparing an Ayurvedic formulation for one of our patients who is suffering from an anorectal ailment. Anorectal disease refers to an ailment of the anus or rectum. The most common conditions are piles, anal warts, anal fissures, anorectal abscess and anal fistulas. Lets have a brief look at an anal fistula from an ayurvedic perspective. ... Anal fistula is called Bhagandara in Sanskrit. According to Ayurveda there are different types. Vata (Sataponaka) Pitta (Ustragriva) Kapha (Parisravi) Vata pitta (Pariksepi) Vata Kapha (Ruju) Kapha Pitta (Arsobhagandara) Sannipata (Sambukavarta) Trauma All Bhagandaras are painful and troublesome in nature. Most of the types are sastra sadhya and require surgery. They are mentioned as Mahagada in Sushruta Samhita. In the Astanga Sangraha (classical Ayurvedic text), eight diseases are described as Maharoga which are Yapya (difficult to treat) in nature. A fistula is a big challenge for both allopathy and ayurvedic surgeons due to their high recurrence rate. Ayurvedic treatments such as nadi bhedana karma, chedana karma, agni karma and ksara karma are recommended. When the fistula track has not been formed and when the bhagandara is in pidaka state (peri anal abscess) then external applications are best advised. BH Ra 51/1. Dashanga lepa can then be applied externally. Our home made prepared classical formulation is called Guggulu Panchapala churna. This formulation contains 5 pala of guggulu hence the name guggulu Panchapala churna. the ingredients are Guggulu Pippali Haritkai Bhibhitaki Amalaki Cinnamon Cardamom The fine powder of these herbs is mixed unifomly this is given with a ghrta as Anupana. If you are suffering from piles, fissures or any other anorectal disease and would like to find out more how Ayurveda may be able to help email us on [email protected] * . . , .

21.01.2022 We have tongue cleaners back in stock! Did you look at your tongue this morning? Was there a thick white coating? Are there cracks on your tongue? During an Ayurvedic consultation, a practitioner will complete Jivha Pariksha, tongue analysis, as part of your examination. This is one of the primary investigative tools used in Ayurveda. The practitioner will assess the size, colour, moisture, shape, marks, and coating of the tongue which provide insight into the health of the... client. If there is a thick coating, it may indicate AMA, digestive toxins, have accumulated in the body. Our organs are represented on the tongue in different locations and examining the tongue can provide insight into the functioning of our bodily systems. How do you want your tongue to look? A pink colour across the entire tongue, no cracks on the tongue, thin coating of white mucus and no teeth marks. If you are curious to learn more you are welcome to book in for a Jivha Pariksha tongue analysis! Bookings are available online on our website or by calling/texting 0406 810 547 to speak with us directly. Golden milk is a drink consumed to help balance the doshas, promote healthy sleeping patterns, improve arthritis, and boost the memory. Turmeric is the spice used to make the drink golden in colour. Considered an anupana, milk helps carry herbs and medicines, such as Turmeric, deep within the channels of the body. ...Try this recipe before bed to help relax into sleep. Ingredients. 1.5 cups of organic and unhomogenized milk. 1 tsp ghee. 1/2 tsp turmeric powder. 1/2 cup of water. Pinch of cinnamon. Optional: 1/2 tsp of honey or jaggery. Directions. 20.01.2022 The second Lakshmi Podcast episode has been released!

20.01.2022 The Scoop on Honey. From an Ayurvedic perspective, honey is widely used for to its healing properties. It is included in many Ayurvedic formulations - some of which we make here in the Lakshmi Kitchen. Honey has a scraping action, called lekhana in Ayurveda. This makes it suitable for those desiring weight loss, as it helps to scrape accumulated toxins and fat. It is also known for its antibacterial and anti-fungal properties.... A few Honey tips for you: Honey should never be heated. When adding honey to your tea make sure to wait until the tea is cooled to drinking temperature. Heating honey will destroy the nutritional benefits including the amino acids, enzymes and minerals. Take our Lakshmi Made Ashwagandha Lehyam for example. Honey is a crucial part of the formulation but is added at the end after the paste has cooled to a proper temperature. Use Raw honey. Local is best! If you suffer from allergies and rhinitis, honey mixed with cinnamon can be a powerful and simple home remedy. Take 1 tsp of honey with 1/2 tsp of cinnamon powder followed by warm water. Honey can be added to a face mask to help encourage healing of scars, inflammation and acne. You can apply a layer of honey externally to cuts, wounds and sores to promote healing. Honey, lemon and ginger water taken in the morning on an empty stomach is a great way to aid detoxification. Avoid taking honey and ghee together at equal weight. The classical Ayurvedic texts inform us that he equal proportions taken together are recognized as toxic for the body. Although honey is beneficial for weight loss, it is advised not to take in excess :) No more than 3-4 tsp per day is necessary. With love from the Lakshmi Team, we hope you enjoy your honey! #honey #ayurveda #honeyandayurveda #ayurvedicremedies #honeyandcinnamon #aminoacids #rawhoney #rhinitis #allergies #acne #honeylemonginger #detoxification #lakshmiayurveda #ayurvedaperth #ayurvedaaustralia #ayurvedictreatment #ayurvedicformulations * .

19.01.2022 Bottle gourd also called Lauki. This vegetable might be very beneficial for you. I am the biggest fan. I would like to share the wonderful benefits of one of the oldest vegetables on the planet. ... According to Ayurveda bottle gourd nourishes all the dhatus and keeps peace among the five elements. Its madhura (sweet) and kashaya (astringent) taste cools any excess heat in the body especially beneficial for your liver. Unlike many other watery squashes it will not aggravate your Kapha dosha which has tendency to retain water. On a subtle level Lauki is said to open the heart and calm the emotions. In Ayurveda it is also known to prevent premature greying and improve hair growth . Some more of the wonderful benefits 1. Cooling for your body and mind 2. Rich in iron, vitamins and minerals 3. Water retention, urinary complaints 4. Acidity, stomach ulcers 5. Hepatic disease 6. Regulates blood pressure 7. Helps in weight loss 8. Cardio protective properties 9. Beneficial in diabetes 10. Nourishes female reproductive system, recommended during pregnancy Bottle gourd is often available in the Asian food stores. Yum Yum I am definitely will be including this more regular in my diet. 19.01.2022 Have you heard of Sattva, Rajas and Tamas? These are the Mano Guna, the qualities of the mind. Sattva Guna is considered the optimal state of mind - one of clarity, positivity, clarity, light and spiritually minded. Sattvic food and lifestyle help bring balance to our bodies and mind. Rajas is the active quality of the mind, focused often on passion and driven by achievement and excessive movement. Have you noticed how quick moving your mind becomes after a cup of coffee ... ? This is an example of the Rajasic guna of our mind. Tamas Guna is related to inertia, a sense of heaviness and lethargic thought processes and behavior. We recommend following a daily routine, lifestyle habits, diet and herbal recommendations in Ayurveda to encourage optimal levels of a Sattvic nature. Keep in mind that all three gunas are necessary for our experience, however Sattva nature is our aim. We can do so by limiting simulating food and beverages, practicing meditation and yoga. Another quote the Ashtanga Hridayam, one of our favourite classical texts. 17.01.2022 Spring Detoxification and Panchakarma Have you considered starting a Spring detox program? Are you experiencing any of the following: fatigue, heaviness, a lack of enthusiasm, constipation, a thick coating on the tongue , headaches, poor concentration, joint and muscle pain or skin problems? All of these symptoms can be signs of an accumulation of Ama, digestive toxins in the body. Ama is considered to be the root cause of most disease. Spring is ta great time to undergo s...easonal Panchakarma treatment. Once the Ama is eliminated you will start to experience a feeling of lightness, enthusiasm and the senses become more alert and active. As the Kapha season, the moist and heavy qualities of the spring season should be balanced by bringing heat into our foods. Kitchari and mung bean soup as well as other light and easy to digest foods are suggested. Avoid caffeine and alcohol, ice cream , yoghurt and curds. Bringing heat into our bodies through physical exercise is also important. Exercise will encourage circulation and create a feeling of lightness to the body. Also, dry body brushing can help to invigorate the lymphatic system and decrease fluid retention. There are a number of Ayurvedic herbs and formulations to support your spring cleansing procedures - a few of which include Triphala, Trikatu, Tulsi, Ginger, Cumin, Black Pepper, and more. Sipping on hot water with fresh ginger, black pepper, cumin and fennel seeds is suggested. Tulsi can help remove excess Kapha dosha from the upper respiratory tract. It also helps to improve circulation and works in weight management. Are you curious to learn more? You are welcome to book in for a consultation to discuss detoxification options to suit your needs. 17.01.2022 Soy Milk. We have a number of dairy-free clients seek advise about their soy milk consumption. Is it okay that I continue drinking my soy latte? Here at Lakshmi Ayurveda we generally do not suggest the use of soy milk for a variety of reasons, a few of which we will briefly explain below. There are many alternative milks available, each with their own benefits and drawbacks.... The heavy qualities of soy can make it very hard to digest. Soy beans are usually covered in toxic products that help keep bugs and pests away. These toxic substances can act as enzyme inhibitors and actually create mineral deficiencies within our body. Some studies have actually shown that soy can inhibit the functioning of the thyroid gland. See below for the link to an interesting article regarding the subject. We suggest looking at other plant/nut based milks available, such as almond or oat milk. However, it is important to practice caution when purchasing ready made alternative milks. A few recommendations for you below. Check the label! Many alternative plant and nut based milks have a number of additives. These include various vegetable oils which can create inflammation in the body as well as added sugars and preservatives. Make your own plant based milk! Oat milk is probably one of the easies alternative milks to make. There are a number of recipes available on the Internet, all of which are generally quick and easy. You can even save the oats and use them for your porridge! A sustainable way of producing your own plant-based milk. If you have any questions about soy milk or other dairy-free milk alternatives, you are welcome to email us at [email protected] or call/text 0406 810 547 for further details. 16.01.2022 Tomorrow is the first day of summer! According to the Charaka Samita, one of the Classical Texts of Ayurveda, during the summer the sun evaporates the moisture of the earth and therefore induces hot dry and sharp qualities in the atmosphere, resulting in Pitta aggravation. In summer, sweet, cold, liquid and fatty food and drinks are beneficial. One should avoid or minimise excessive exercise, alcohol, and diets which are salty, sour and pungent, or hot. Tastes to Favour:... Sweet, bitter and astringent tastes are best to consume during the summer months. Tastes to Limit: Sour, salty and spicy foods should be limited during summer. Foods to Favour: When shopping, choose foods that are seasonal and local. During the summer season, these usually include apples berries, grapes pineapple, pomegranates, coconuts lime, leafy greens, asparagus, green beans, broccoli, cucumbers and celery. Basmati rice is also a great choice for this season. Juicy and sweet fruits are perfect for summer season, like a juicy mango or peach. Spices to Favour: Since summer possesses the quality of heat, we want to incorporate more cooling herbs in our diet. Coriander basil, rosemary, fennel, cumin and cardamom are great for this season. We have a summer recipe document available for our initial consultation clients! If you are interested in booking in for a consultation, appointment times are available on our website. 13.01.2022 At Lakshmi Ayurveda, we all love the colour and smell of fresh turmeric. I remember preparing Haridra churna with a mortar and pestle many years ago in India. There was quite a bit of arm strength required to do this, especially on a hot Indian summer day. In this video, Karin provides you with an explanation on how to take turmeric to incrase the absorption of the curcumin.... Today I prepared this wonderful formulation with organic herbs here at Lakshmis kitchen. The traditional steps of Sneha Kalpana (medicated oil/ ghee preparation) was followed. Stay tuned to watch the steps for the turmeric ghrita preparation throughout the week. Turmeric ghee is a powerful blood cleanser with anti-inflammatory actions. It is highly beneficial in eye disorders and skin ailments. The ingredients are Turmeric, Bala, Yasthimadhu, Neem, Haritaki, Bibhitaki and Amalaki, Milk and our Organic Full Moon Ghee. 12.01.2022 Have you treated your navel with warm oil or ghee before? We would recommend to try this simple and so nurturing Ayurvedic therapy. Nabhi chikits or Nabhi Purana ... The mothers nutrition passes through the placenta which is connected to the foetus through the umbilical cord. All the nutrition, oxygen and life support from the mothers blood goes through the placenta and to the baby through blood vessels in the umbilical cord. The navel is an important part of our body and defines our origin. Imortance of Nabhi in Ayurveda 1. Nabhi is Pitta sthana (site of Pitta) 2. Nabhi is Sira Mula (root of veins veins or blood vessels) 3. Nabhi is a Marma point (vital point) 4. Nabhi is the site of Manipura chakra Nabhi Chikitsa or nabhi purana is a specialised treatment of Ayurveda where medicated oils or ghee is pooled in the navel. It is a nurturing, grounding, healing and cleansing treatment. This treatment is useful in anxiety, grief, low self esteem, insomnia, urinary complaints, digestive complaints, menstrual pain, infertility. You can do this at home. 1. Start with a warm bath and add your favourite aromatherapy oils, burn an incense stick or light a candle 2. Before you go in the bath melt and warm some ghee. Place your ghee jar in some hot water. 3. After your bath dry off and put on your bathrobe 4. Lie comfortably on your back and pour the melted ghee in your navel. 5. Leave the ghee for 15 -20 minutes. 6. Massage your belly and wipe off any excess 7. A wonderful to do while you are meditating. 09.01.2022 Today we have prepared a fresh batch of homemade toothpowder Ayurveda recommends using herbs with a bitter and astringent taste for oral hygiene, as they are naturally anti-bacterial and anti-fungal in nature. Our toothpowder contains herbs and spices such as triphala, licorice, clove, neem, guduchi, jatiphala, turmeric, cinnamon and more. These herbs are coarsely ground and many of which we use in daily cooking. To start, first put the toothpowder on your finger. The p...owder is best applied with the finger to feel our teeth and gums, increasing our bodily awareness. Next rub the powder into your teeth and gums. Leave it for a few minutes. Finish by rinsing your mouth with warm water. If you swallow a little of the powder don’t worry its absolutely fine. Toothpowder is helpful in treating: 1. Receding gums. 2. Gingivitis. 3. Bad breath. 4. Gum inflammation. 5. Mouth ulcers. 6. Gum sores. 7. Tooth whitening. 8. Improves taste perception. 9. Enhances overall oral health. 09.01.2022 At Home Nasya Treatment. Also known as Shirovirechana, Nasya is great for lubricating the nasal passages, cleansing and rejuvenating the tissues and organs of both the head and neck. I absolutely love Spring season - the sun raising earlier, the flowers blossoming, the fresh air. As you have read in our recent articles, Spring season is a great time to incorporate light and cleansing foods and treatments, such as Nasya, to bring balance to the body and mind.... The elements that make up Kapha dosha are water and earth . The qualities of Kapha include heaviness, moisture, cold, soft and slow. During this time of the year we are prone to conditions such as colds, allergies, sinus congestion etc. Especially those with Kapha dosha in their constitution! Nasya treatment is one of the five treatments traditionally performed during Panchakarma treatment. Pancha means 5 in Sanskrit. Spring is a great time to undergo a Panchakarma detoxification program! In addition to treating cold symptoms, allergies, and congestion, Nasya is indicated in chronic sinusitis, migraines, epilepsy, degenerative diseases of the brain, and tinnitus. Inhalation of herbal smoke, called Dhumapana, is generally performed after Nasya Panchakarma treatment at Lakshmi Ayurveda. The combination of nasya and Dhumapana is great for removing excess Kapha dosha. We do not recommend this treatment at home, as it is best supervised by an experienced Ayurvedic practitioner. If you would like to administer Nasya Oil at home, we suggest using cleansing type of Nasya Oil such as Anu Thailam or Vacha oil during the spring season. 2 drops in each nostil, generally in the morning and on an empty stomach. However, it is best to speak with an Ayurvedic practitioner to determine which oil will be most suitable for you. Some individuals need a nutritive Nasya Oil to treat indications of dryness or Vata disorders. If you are curious to learn more, you are welcome to call/text 0406 810 547 or email us at [email protected] for further information. From the Lakshmi team, we wish you a great day ahead! #nasya #ayurvedictreatment #pranavayu #pranavata #prana #vata #vayu #nasya

08.01.2022 This is one of the most powerful Anti ageing formulas. My meditation is when I am in the kitchen preparing classical Ayurvedic herbal formulations. Today I am making some Amalaki Rasayan for you. It brought back memories being at University when our teacher Professor Warrier invited us to her home to prepare this formulation. ... This was back in 2006, at that time I would not have imagined that making this formulation will bring so much joy. Neither I would have imagined that I will be making it 14 years later in my kitchen at Lakshmi Ayurveda. Charaka has mentioned Amalaki Rasayan in the first chapter of the Chikitsa sthana (the section which deals with the treatment and medicines of disease). Amalaki also known as Amla, Indian Gooseberry or Emblica officinalis, is an Ayurvedic berry known for having five of the six tastes. These include pungent, bitter, astringent, sweet and sour, excluding salty. Its qualities make it pacifying to Vata, Pitta, and Kapha and can be used in all seasons. Ch. Su 27 Benefits of Amalaki 1. Taking Amalaki helps to build ojas, your vibrancy and energy for life, due to its rasayana qualities. Rasayanas have the ability to strengthen, rejuvenate, nourish and improve immunity of the body. 2. Beneficial for skin, eye, and hair health due to high mineral and antioxidant levels which promote the growth of healthy cells. Amla juice can be applied to the scalp to encourage hair growth and improve dry scalp. 3. The high vitamin C and antioxidant content has anti-inflammatory properties which work to promote healthy detoxification and assimilation of nutrients. 4. Amalaki improves digestion. The cooling tendencies of Amla helps to clear out excess heat within the digestive track and promote regular bowel movements. Amalaki Rasayan contains, Amla juice, Amla pulp, Amla churna, Pippali, Ghee and Honey. The ingredients say it all, it is packed with Antioxidants. This formulation is beneficial for 1. Anaemia (Pandu) 2. Tridosha balancing 3. Nourishment of Rasa dhatu 4. Rasayana (Rejuvenation) 5. To enhance immunity (Ojas building) 6. headaches 7. promotes eye sight (Chakshushya) 8. skin problems, hair fall 9. aphrodisiac (vrushya) 10. anti ageing (vayasthapan) For more information email [email protected] We are looking forward hearing from you. 08.01.2022 Are you looking for a plant based protein rich and gluten free breakfast? If yes you might like to try some Amaranth. Amaranth is highly nutritious it is rich in fibre, protein and contains important micronutrients such as manganese, magnesium, phosphorus and iron. ... In Germany we had this more regular in our diet but it was less commonly seen here in Australia until it gained more popularity as a healthy food and ancient grain more recent. It has a wonderful nutty and earthy flavour. The key is to just cook it enough until it gets a creamy sticky consistency. Overcooking will make it hard to chew. You will be surprised how much it will fill you. Let your eyes be smaller than your stomach just a little will satiate you. Spiced Amaranth porridge 1/2 kalonji seeds 1/4 tsp ajwain seeds 1 tsp of ghee Cinnamon powder If you like it sweet add honey or add a 1/2 tsp of salt. 1 cup of amaranth flakes 1 1/2 cups of water or milk of your choice Combine all the ingredients in a small pot and bring to a simmer. Stir over medium to low heat until the flakes are tender (about 5 minutes). Add honey after it has cooled slightly. You can serve this warm or room temperature.
