25.01.2022 What do I do when I'm not sleeping well and feel tired but still want to get the work done? In this instance, the work got done with a little extra rest between sets. Do I recommend the same for everyone else? Not necessarily... You have to learn to listen to what your body is telling you. We can usually tell if our output will be greatly diminished due to fatigue. Are you just a bit tired? ... Totally cooked? Not eating well? Lethargic? Dehydrated? Haven't slept in three days? Different levels of/reasons for exhaustion can result in a different decision as to whether or not you train, as well as how you train. So what are the options? * Work through it as well as you can, albeit at a lower output. * Maintain your output but increase your rest periods. * Sit it out and recharge your batteries. Each of these are reasonable approaches to training while tired, you just have to develop that intuitiveness when it comes to your body and training. If in doubt, sit it out. 20.01.2022 SPIDER CURLS: Great way to further isolate the bicep. - Set bench on an incline - Feet on floor, chest on bench - Curl up and contract bicep... - Lower back down under control Can be done with dumbbells, straight barbell or EZ curl bar as per what feels best for you or you can change it up. The peak of the concentric movement holds greater tension than a preacher curl variant and reduces deltoid recruitment, while restricting momentum. 15.01.2022 Want to be able to pump out more pushups? * Don't flare your elbows. *Train your core and engage it when performing your pushups. * Train to a full range of motion instead of half reps. 5 full reps will have more benefit than 10 half reps.... * Hand placement; just outside shoulders, rather than too narrow or too wide. Some variations call for a narrow hand placement but I will discuss those in another post. * Use the benefit of negative pushups. 14.01.2022 There's a few things to consider; too much volume and your intensity may be too low. Too much intensity and your volume may be too low. Too much frequency and your recovery may be insufficient and your output reduced, risk of injury increased. The important thing to remember is that your body knows when you are working too far below your limit to force adaptation. If you lift too light, your muscle will not feel "pushed" enough to facilitate any change, even if you push it ...to failure. If you lift too heavy, you will not reach the volume needed to create the required stimulus. 10.01.2022 At dawn, on the 25th of April 1915, soldiers rowed ashore in boats called "lighters" during the Gallipoli landings, under fire and without outboard motors. This is but one packet of one story, of so many stories of hardship and adversity the ANZACs endured. These stories come together to create a sombre picture, but one interlaced with messages of teamwork, initiative, courage, honour and respect.... Though daily I reflect on my service and that of mates I served with, some of whom didn't make it back and others who came back to never be the same again...this day means a great deal to me (and all vets for that matter). When you are genuinely grateful for the service and sacrifice of the great men and women who came before us, it reminds us of how worthwhile our service really was and it feels great to know their memory lives on in our hearts. 03.01.2022 If we had to pick just 5 back exercises, these are the 5 I would recommend: 1) DEADLIFT - Deadlift is a great compound exercise which will strengthen and develop the entire body. Some will argue that it is not essential and will omit it from their routine but it's a well proven exercise for back and posterior development. Just make sure your form is correct and keep your ego in check when performing this lift.... 2) PULL UPS - Hard to find a better exercise for back strength and development than the pull up. It is common for people to struggle with this demanding exercise. If this is the case for you, try an assisted variant with either the assisted pull up machine, or by using a resistance band to give you some extra support. 3) HYPEREXTENSIONS - These are generally performed on a bench called a Roman Chair and are an excellent way to strengthen your lower back. If you're not already doing these, I strongly suggest you incorporate them into your workouts. 4) LAT PULLDOWN - While pull ups are a must-do exercise, lat pulldown will work in a slightly different way. Neither should replace the other, in my opinion. When performed correctly, a lat pulldown will isolate the latissimus dorsi. A neutral grip bar can help you achieve an ideal movement. 5) T-BAR ROW - I favour this over the bent over row due to the plane of movement the weight is travelling on being more perpendicular. You can still change the grips according to what is available to you but I like a narrow grip for these. Erectors, lats, scapula...hard to find a muscle that gets out of this one untouched. If you are skipping any of these, incorporating them into your back routine will work wonders for your strength and muscle development.
